So I'm currently playing a paladin? I'm planning on multiclassing 3 levels into warlock So I can cast eldritch blast to pull people in cause I'm sick of flying rats.
Also I'm debating which pact I should take as more cantrips and rituals will help roleplay but, talking to an animal on my shoulder would also help my current insane character. Blade would just do magical damage so not much there, maybe throwing it more?

@diomedes7971 I definitely agree in theory, but I take the opposite approach in practice.
I prefer subclasses to not exist, and I think it's much easier to balance a job system, which is essentially multiclassing.
The reason it works better than multiclassing IMO is that job systems tend to have the player choose a primary class and a secondary class, and certain abilities are only available to the primary class, or are delayed if taken through a secondary class.
Then all subclass options can merely be class feats, similar to the "pick one of two" approach to leveling a secondary class in a job system.

Paladin has 3 good jump off points that depend on your build requirements. First level 2; You got divine smite the key reason to go paladin. Second level 5; you got extra attack and second level spells. Third Level 6; you got aura of protection for more defense. If you just want divine smite on a gish build with heavy armor level 2 is the break away. If you want full offense on a melee build level 5 is the break away. If you want some more defense on that same build level 6 is the break away.

Depends on the Oath. Vengeance, for example, is great to jump ship after 6, because they barely get a level 7 feature at all. At that level, Conquest is locking down Frightened enemies, Watchers is boosting everyone's initiative, Glory is boosting ally's movement, Devotion is blocking Charm effects, Ancients is reducing incoming spell damage, etc. Vengeance...gets the option to move a little when they hit with an attack of opportunity. Not them and allies within range. Just them. You pretty much need to take the Sentinel and Polearm Master feats just to have a semi-reliable way to even make opportunity attacks, at which point you don't really need the extra movement all that much.

Chances are if your a pally, your taking sentinel by default, OoV is underpowered at 7, but the capstone is perhaps the longest lasting and one of the better abilities, if your playing to 20 (which my table loves doing -rip me- lol) plus OoV is one of the easiest subclasses to roll with so long as your not slaying innocent people (if your table enforces oath bindings).

I can quicken booming blade getting the movement control that I would have gotten going 7 levels into conquest. Then of course you get Fear, Spirit Guardians, and Spirit Shroud. After 5 levels in divine soul sorcerer do Paladin all the way until level 19 then last level is sorcerer again. From there onward you could focus more on smites and multiclassing with a full charisma spell caster allows you to do just that so in my opinion, by level 6 you already got the best the paladin could offer (extra attack, smite and aura) so now more spellcasting would be icing on the cake.

I’m playing a Paladin rogue. It’s a very fun combination with cunning action allowing me to dip in and out of an enemy’s face as needed. Swashbuckler Rogue to make use of my Charisma, and Vengeance Paladin so I can give myself advantage (sneak attack) on any big mean bosses. The urge to go hexblade is very tempting, so my charisma can become my “all in one” stat that I focus on.
It’s a really fun to play build because it is a challenge at lower levels, but I get the feeling I’ll be a force to recon with by level 10 (Swashbuckler3, Vengeance 6, Hexblade1(?))

I quite like Soulknife for the completely harmless and unarmed character until they suddenly strike, assassin style. Sure you won't do the most damage with soulknife but paladin smite spell + smite on the soul blade can make up for that. Bonus points if you also dip into moon druid (CR ½ Ape can use the soul blades while in wildshape) or whispers bard to take on their identity.

Paladin 5 levels (2 attacks), Warlock 5 levels (gain 3rd attack), Fighter 2 levels (action surge). Quantity of attacks overshadows the possibility of slightly higher damage on significantly fewer attacks.
I played a full paladin game on my last playthrough. Was fun and Pal hit reasonably hard but damage output lagged behind Laezel with battle master.
With this current playthrough (multiplayer) running this build above. Currently 5 levels paladin, 2 levels of warlock.
Admittedly, this build is heavily favoring melee and smite damage output rather than being a balanced build with defensive and protection buffs. Highly focused on one rounding the big bads with smites and action surge at the endgame.

Valor bard get extra attack so no need to stay in paladin for 5 levels and aura of protection is good but man having a list of possibility combat ending spells is better. Couldve went swords bard but i wanna still give back to the party and combat inspiration makes bardic inspiration so much better. A player won't be holding a bardic inspiration for more than a round guaranteed. Also if you get to level 16 you can cast a whole level spell and smite as a bonus action which makes you the strongest gish in the game blowing bladesinger, sorcadin, and hex bard out of the water. Such a slept on build

If you're using the current UAs as basis, the Paladin breaking off after level 5 for full caster levels is actually extremely strong. Bard, Sorcerer, or even Wizard are highly favorable as they grant you access to full caster slot progression, the arcanae list, and access to their unique class features. That means a feat and 4th level slots at 9 (which also means Find Steeds Fly Speed 4 levels early) 3rd level arcane spells at 10, 5th level slots at 11, 4th level arcane at 12, etc. Your spell progression is delayed by 1 level but quickly overtakes your fellow paladins while your spell slots already had and are now blowing past them, you get your flying steed super early, on top of crazy strong features like metamagics, modify spell, or jack of all trades and bardic inspiration.

Paladin then multiclass into Warlock and go pact of the blade. Focus heavily on charisma and constitution, charisma for attack and damage scaling with your pact weapon, constitution for concentration checks and hp. You become a hard hitting and tanky melee and ranged combatant, the only downside would be less warlock or paladin spells and class features depending on how many levels are in each. Bard is also a good class to multiclass into from paladin, it gives you rogue like abilities/playstyle with some good spells and utility.

I've theorycrafted a few max-level part-paladin builds, though I have yet to test them. The ones not classified as "failure to launch" after some advice from your good friends, the Dungeon Dudes, are: two at paladin 10/cleric 10, one at paladin 17/barbarian 3, and one at paladin16/fighter 4. As you can see, they're all at least half-paladin because it's such a good class.

I’d argue that if you plan on multiclassing *into* paladin, you should consider simply *starting* as paladin, for heavy armor proficiency, especially if you’re planning on multiclassing into warlock, since they get the same saving throw proficiency and similar skill proficiencies (and the ones you may want that aren’t on the list are easily obtained through race or background choices).

Minor BG3 spoilers in this post, specifics are avoided as much as possible though.
I did this in BG3, I was going for a "descent into madness" type of playthrough with Dark Urge, and I ended up doing Pally (Oathbreaker) 5, Rogue (assassin) 7.
It worked out really well, but definitely had some moments where the build didn't feel very goood around levels 6 and 7.
It came right back online at 8 once I got my Assassin features, though.
I managed to one-shot most of the endgame content. (Avoiding spoilers) I one-rounded the Dark Urge boss, I very nearly one-rounded her comrade, but I did struggle with the final conflict a bit due to all the adds.
Overall, very worth it and super fun build.

Sorcerer, Bard, maybe warlock. Smiter builds. After level 6-7 (depending if subclass feature at level 7 is good). More spell slots from full caster beats the improved smite feature. Ability score improvement you can get from your second class at level 4. Spells from Arcane spell list can beat any features afterwards (Shield, Mirror Image, Haste, Fly, etc.). But the main point is to get a lot of spell slots to smite with.

Only downside is I can’t get more Paladin spells if I want to continue increasing that damage output, but I think it’s an even trade (especially since we have a wizard and sorcerer in our group for the utility). Giving them a +5 to all saves if they are close to me has saved their bacon too.

And I really want to I can take the 5th level pali and just quicken cast booming blade to get 2 normal hits and one mega hit while locking the target in place

The thing I find the hardest about it is very usually you want either 6, 7, or 11 levels into paladin. However if you’re going 11 levels in there’s a good chance the game is either about to end, or it is going to really high levels possibly even 20. When the prospect of 20 levels is dangled in front of you it becomes incredibly hard to just pass up their level 20 subclass transformation feature, and if you do it’ll typically just be weaker than going the full 20 and you’ll be handicapping yourself.
Overall just a lotta hard choices, so I typically just try to run for the hills at 6 to sorcerer, warlock, or whatever it is im multiclassing into
