That is a lovely presentation of that cute palette. I like the vintage feel, but I wish they had included the cochenille red in lieue of one of the similar earth yellows. I like the raw umber a lot.It's lovely for painting blond hair. Cute illustration!
I totally agree! I wish it came with the red. After spending nearly £60 on a paint set I didn't want to spend nearly another £20 on a tube of red paint!
Having the two earth yellows is an interesting choice. I adore and use a lot of yellow ochre, but there are times when I want a similar colour but less opacity. If the umber is transparent, this would be an awesome colour palette for my style.
The umber is a little more transparent. I personally don't think both were needed in this set especially as it's only an 8 colour set. I'd be more forgiving if this was a larger set like a 24 set.
Despite having a really functional Art Toolkit pocket palette for travel, I've wanted a Bijou Box forever, so I jumped on this set when it went on sale after Christmas. I added four half pans, but want to keep that vintage feel for colour selection, so I went with Chrome Yellow Hue Deep, Permanent Carmine, Prussian Blue, and Sepia... I may eventually try to replace the Yellow Raw Ochre or Raw Umber, as like you, I see including both of them in such a small palette a bit of a wasted slot. And I find myself turning to my accumulated Schmicke colours more and more often lately. I have a large selection of Daniel Smith and Winsor & Newton of course, but there's just something about the smoothness of the paint and relative softness in the colours that keeps me coming back to them... I think I want to fill an entire sketchbook with things done in this palette and see how harmonious or incongruous it turns out. Cute illustration as always. I love how you put that subtle shading in on the tree. Happy New Year!
Ya know, the masters only had about 15 colors to choose from. 4 if you don't count ochers. Seems to me, they created amazing things with so little. Hope you enjoy your bijou. I got one several decades ago when I joined the whiskey painters. Love it still too this day.
Wow, I've never thought to use the pan wrap on the swatch card! Brilliant! These are such amazing colors and I'm sitting with my mouth open, drooling on my keyboard watching you swatching! Thank you for sharing these and the final illustration brings it all home! Cheers! ~ Mark
The swatching was so satiffying to watch, how the colors spread into the wetted surface was sooo beautiful. The palette is so adorable and you can always add more pans in the middle. I wonder what made them choose those color combinations for those palette. I like Yellow Ochre and Raw Sienna both, but in such a limited palette I'd probably choose differently. But also it's retro, who knows what else was available for the choices. Thank you for this wonderful review and the adorable illustration!
This is actually a Bijou palette, the whisky painter one has a water reservoir. I love the font on the branding, it is really cool. As it is a special edition it is worth keeping all the labels. I have added four pans to my set, will you do the same, they are such lovely palettes to use.
Thanks so much for these great videos! I was curious if you have any suggested resources for trying to locate the pigment information on some vintage W&N gouache paint? There's nothing on the tubes and it's driving me insane, and I'm hoping an enthusiast like yourself might be able to point me in the right direction. Thank you again for all you do, I love your paints!
Thank you! I did have an email that I used a many years ago that was a W&N contact but I believe their admin team was then moved to the US. I expect the email I have is no longer active. And sadly I heard last year that people reaching out for info on their back catalogue didn't get anywhere as they were in the process of moving their archives to the US.

I forgot that there is space in the middle for more colours! I even own a non schmincke bijoux...doh!

I believe you can fit extra pans in. Depending on your brand of half pan you should be able to fit 3-4
