I heard another artist talk about divets in watercolor paint... seemed to suggest pouring some paint... waiting to dry.. then pouring another layer... waiting for it to dry... and again for a third layer in a normal sized half and full pan... I believe that Schmincke factory pours in layers. Anyone else hear the same thing? Thanks BTW for doing this... I am trying to decide whether to buy them.
I expect some shrinkage but it seemed they shrank more than expected on a few colors. I just topped them with another layer. I’ll keep playing. Thank you
I guess I’m just wondering how common shrinkage is with certain pigment/binder used combinations…these vegan paints mean different binder is used…so are paints shrinking more with this binder or do they also shrink with schmincke regular binder? Just so interesting @@RaspberryColors
Yes, that's how paint makers do it!
The paint from the tube is mostly water. Once it evaporates, there is inevitably some shrinkage. That's why 2ml pans are roughly the same price as 5ml tubes.
Referring to an art supply as ‘not exciting’ is so true. Some art supplies make me very excited to try them out and others are ‘not exciting’ LOL.

Oh, I would not get rid of that Canasias earth color. I think it’s absolutely beautiful! I guess we all have different tastes and different opinions. 😁
People rediscovering why we gladly stopped using all these archaic pigments in the first place 😂
It’s cracking me up, people are so surprised when disused pigments turn out to be not great or have ‘weird’ quirks by modern standards. Not a criticism specific to this channel, it seems to be pretty much ubiquitous across the internet.

Recently I bought the stil de grain and dragon's blood. Only because I'm fascinated by obscure/rare pigments 🙂

These look much better out of pans. They probably don’t move in water because they don’t have the usual Schmincke oxgall.
Yes, you are right, the slip out of the tube, was just a bit difficult. Out of pans, they feel like watercolor with heavy pigment. Thank you.
Could you please do a mixing chart with the palette you created? I suspect that the blues with the yellows could create some cool mixes.. and maybe those two lightest 'whites/gray/tan' colors could also mute those reds in interesting ways.

I bought all the 16 colors, swatched them out, and returned them all. These paints feel very different and create too big of a learning curve for me.
Yes when I did the original video, I had issues, dried they feel like regular watercolor, but out of the tube slippery, and not fun. Thank you Brian.
After your first video I was very disappointed because of the streaky paint. Then I watched a video by Miss Kunterbunt Art. She used the paints just like watercolours and not so thickly and the result was beautiful.
I love Schmincke products but I am not sure yet if I will skip these or not. I already have a lot of watercolours.
Ya the instructions of these strait out of the tube, was not good, but thin like watercolor, they work well. Thank you.
I just watched Miss Kunterbunt Art's review and she still had a lot of streakiness in her swatches for some colors like indigofera and färbergrün
@@YkronRobePG23 is streaky in every brand for some reason. So, that wasn't a surprise. But yes, I noticed the streakiness of indigofera too.
I see only natural-vegan-eco-whatever romance marketing there and nothing else. Why use natural indigo or madder red when there are lightfast alternatives. Earth reds and yellows may be applicable and lightfast, the lack of oxgall and hence movement may be good for some applications, but I’d prefer something more versatile and lightfast.
Even if you ignore all the points you make... The product is subpar.
A lot of video reviews also show that the paints are super streaky and difficult to use. Not to mention some of them look like a lot of binder and very little pigment.
They really need to rethink their binder formula and improve the pigment to binder ratio of some colors. Perhaps the pigment particle size as well.

That was really useful. I much prefer putting my tube paints into pans and drying them out, I find I waste far too much trying to work straight from the tube. I bought the Lalvarit violet as it was the one that called to me the most and I got the little 3 pack of liquid earths, with umber, sanguine and chalk. The chalk I could definitely live without but I'm going to see how it works mixed with others. I do like the umber and sanguine though.
The liquid earth colors look interesting. I wonder how they will work and feel. Thank you.
@@RaspberryColors I've just tried out mixing the chalk with watercolours, with a much higher amount of chalk to colour and it only lightened them *very* slightly, mostly it just changed the consistency of the watercolour. Admittedly this was from the tube, not panned, so possibly the weird texture wouldn't be a problem then but it had minimal effect. Next experiment will be mixing it with metallics and trying on dark paper. Still, two out of three I'm happy with!

I’m swatching on Saunders Waterford 100% cotton,for the larger swatches, and Fabriano artistico 100% cotton for the small swatches. So I’m not sure I can get much better on paper. Lol thank you Taven

I’m really looking forward to the day when schmincke makes all their paints vegan when society shifts more to saving the planet and away from animal agriculture. But it’s a shame they didn’t sort the binder and dispersing on these. For that reason I won’t buy them. They were lazy. They can make their student grade paints disperse just fine and many other brands can make paints disperse just fine but not these.
