From Wikipedia: The loss of Ark Royal proved the end of Sam's shipborne career and he was transferred first to the offices of the Governor in Gibraltar, and then sent back to the United Kingdom, where he saw out the remainder of the war living in a seaman's home in Belfast called the "Home for Sailors". Sam died in 1955.

And after the last ship the british sailors decided it is too dangerous to have a german spy on board of a british vessel. So he was send back to britain where he died old in a home for veteran sailors.
I know this is late but, I love how the song and the flashbacks combined at 3:35, it is such beautiful memories for either the cat or the sailors. R.I.P.

There is another sailor cat that got really popular because his documents were posted online. Alot of pets/mascots in the military get documented. They even have a title for sailor cats, mousers.

so we all know german cats seek revenge if you sink their bed (bismark) and land them on the water, he managed to get in the ark royal wich launched the torpedo bomber that disabled his bed (bismark)......now that is a gumpy cat!

Can't be that impossible to take note of a cat after your ship rescues the crew of an enemy vessel.
I mean life was so dreary and dark in those times so a cute cat would definitely be welcomed and taken note of.
