112 people were rescued from the Bismarck and Sam was floating on a piece of wood and easy to rescue along with the sailors. Most people have good hearts and aren't going to abandon a live animal floating nearby.
Never heard this story before. Amazing. Ark Royal was part of Force H from Gibraltar during the hunt for the Bismarck and was later torpedoed. It sank while it was being towed back to Gib in the hope it could be saved. Funny thing is that Ark Royal was considered a lucky ship... I guess until the cat came on board!
I remember in the game Divinity: Original sin, there was a cat called unsinkable Sam ( you could talk to him for a side quest if you had the animal whisperer trait) who had survived the sinking of 3 ships. I never knew they based that character on an actual cat that survived 3 sinking ships during WW2.
Naval cats have saved so many lifes. It is basically how we humen came to this point. In ships and where agriculture began there were rodents. Then there are some small predators who likes to eat rodents. 1+1=2 . Cats are the best. Then in wooden ships they prefered to have cats with defection that caused too many thumbs. In Finnish they are laivakissa i.e. ship cats. Ernest Hemingway was a lover of ship cats.
You need to react to Wojtek. A bear who was officially in the ranks of the polish army , fought at Monte casino and even reached the ranks of corporal meaning he outranked 25% of the people who fought in ww2 af least
Now i sometimes find myself look suspicious at our cats, but luckily i am not on a ship with them. Eventually Oskar took revenge on the Bismarck, as this was the most relaxing battleship to be on before its sinking?
Saving a cat would be remarkable and would get around pretty quickly. Sam seen more combat than many sailors will ever see in a lifetime and I would love to know if he got any medals. Interestingly, Sam was retired to Belfast in Sailor town to live with other retired sailors where he died in 1954 I think. I'm a Belfast man.
I always think about how when a ship was sunk, the ship that fired would still save thw survivors. Mostly out of the respect of their occupation. Basically they saved each other because they wouldnt want to be lost at sea either.
Please note: do not let Oscar near the radio or bridge please we have already lost a carrier to this damn cat. also make sure Harry doesn’t leave the radio room door open due to Oscar somehow using the radio to signal a U-boat (ACCIDENTALLY) to the location of the ark royal thanks - Barry the sailor
British sailors seem to have a soft spot for animals. Don't nforget that in the days of wooden wall ships they all had one, or several, felines on board to hunt the rats which caused havoc amongst the food supplies
I think that the real story is that after the Bismarck sunked, a german hand over Oskar to the brits so they could take care of him. I'm not sure about this though
Oh I would most certainly save a cat from a sinking ship. Certainly so if it was from an enemy ship that was shooting at me, that case def save it before the crew. After all cat wouldnt have been firing on me.
Not so strange, during the evacuation from Afghanistan British troops managed to bring 200 odd dogs and cats home. Not to mention some other ex soldier managed to bring home his animal shelter. I doubt US troops were any different.
Top man, loving this channel. We're all learning new stuff from your post's. Lesson 1, probably wouldn't r** with the Sas. Anyone beginning to think we need to hit the Taliban again z they are taking a lot of ground, quickly?
i know the story but damn thats a weird video, my 18 year old grandad was on ark royal right up till she sank. i never knew about the cat till recently though so couldnt ask him

British sailors picked Oscar up out the sea after the sinking of Bismarck and named him Sam
then promptly kicked him off the boat
@@tiddyfard4517 no, ship was sunk , then the cat was rescued again
You gotta watch "Wotjek the soldier bear" if you haven't seen it already. 👍👍👍
It was the cat that was sinking all these ships, we all know they're evil (double agent, just saying🤣)
C'mon the Dogs 🐕
😅
Cats are evil, they are always plotting how they are going to kill you when your back is turned

Well they do have nine lives 😺🙂
At 4.32 Unsinkable Sam finds the ships supply of LSD. The on board marines were not happy 😉 🇬🇧❤🇺🇸

Really cool to see how you experience/learn about the different cultures 🤝.
A video on the german KSM/ Kampfschwimmer would be great to see, too 😅✌️
The Ark Royal was involved in the Battle of The Bismarck
tbh. life on Bismarck was way more chilling on the Ark, so British get what they supose to have when sunk the great Bismarck lol.

Nope. Taking a lot of ground quickly cause that's what most of Afghanistan wants.
You don't know what Brits are like when it comes to animals
More WWII vids
