Feelin' so sad for discovering this video at this moment... My wife, kids and neighbours are sleeping, and I really would like to try this out...
This has to be the best video on UA-cam for trumpet players. You’ve singlehandedly improved my range by leaps and bounds. Thank you so very very much!!
After 40 years I have started back on St. Jacombs. It not only has helped my double and triple tonguing, but also my single tonguing in a few short weeks. It's a ball buster and requires a lot of rest just to get through one exercise, but well worth the effort. I highly recommend it. And there are some pretty good diminished patterns that are fun, especially to be written in 1894!
Thank you so much. I know this is an old video but I stumbled upon it looking for ways to improve my range and get around my issue with pressure, and as soon as you explained this everything just clicked. Thanks.
The changes in loudness on a pitch are actually continuous (infinite small "steps"). and various pitches can be played at any of MANY different volumes.
I really enjoy your tips on playing the trumpet. While I was learning to play even in taking private lessons through high school and then into college. I don't remember hearing things that you are sharing. I am currently working to center my tone. I have been using mouthpiece buzzing for this. I started yesterday to use your suggestions on blowing. Thanks. Keep up the great job. Richard
I see this video is rather old, but my goodness, I have been playing the horn for a very long time, and as long as I have been playing, I have never heard how range can be increased based on the techniques described in this video. Like, I just played one of my highest notes ever simply applying the techniques you just described. And now I have a very technical process for understanding the physiological process required to increase my range and drastically improve my horn playing overall. Thanks you so much!!!
Roger Ingram has really helped me understand the process of air release....in early January I’ll get the opportunity to chat with Jon fattis about air volume after a visit to our local jazz theater.
Thank you so much for making this video! I've had trouble with pressure issued for a while now and this video has addressed every problem associated with it. I know I am going to have to "relearn" how to go higher but I am definitely willing to wait if it means doing it pressure free. Thank you so much!!!!
You just made my day! Target practice I have to work on. But this exercise is really helpful to get to higher notes and not feel like there is alot of pressure. Thank you!
Thanks for a lucid and very useful presentation. I think you've got it exactly right.
Its so great that you do this ^^ I'm 28 and I just found out yesterday that I want to learn to play the trumpet B-) So this was a uplifting and informativ youtube-clip B-) Wonderful that you're doing this B-)
Finally a rip that actually works. Thanks a lot!
Thank you very much for this video. I haven't yet reviewed your other videos, but I will . You have explained what jim Morrison said to do in a way that i can understand. i have played for many, many years and not understood this concept.I still can't seem to do it, however.
Just learning to play trumpet and this is a great lesson. Thanks.
Great Job ! It helps alot understanding the concept behind the high register !
Gosh.. what a great video Erik.. thanks again... first target shooting.. now faster air... I get it!!!!!! Steve
great explanation! you sound like a Philly or South Jersey guy. I've been searching for some confirmation on Morrison's ideas and another guy from Australia who says the same thing on blowing levels equaling harmonic slot increases, and you've done that very well here. Thanks!
Thanks for your videos, they are very helpful.
When I play in the upper register and when fatigued playing in the middle register... I notice I get lots of air leaks through my embouchure. Are there any good suggestions to strengthen this?
Thank you! This really helped!
Very good lesson. I have found whisper tones to also help for range development. Also, what kind of horn and mouthpiece do you have?
Eric, thank you for very good instructional video. I am using your suggestions and am experiencing quick improvements in my range. You have an interesting trumpet that I am not familiar with. Who manufactures this horn? John
Very interesting! I will bring this into my practice routine. I play lead for a big band and I just "screw it on" and through some fingers at it. It's all pressure method and by the end of a gig my lip could well be bust!! TC
Muchas gracias por el aporte 😊
Hello, the first time I attempted to climb to the high C like you did I managed,it perfrctly. It was effortless, the slots, lined up perfectly and I understood exactly what you were teAching me. But I haven't been able to recreate the results yet
Wow. Just wow
BRILLIANT, MANY THAKS.
Wow...great video!!! Love the details. My daughter in high school will be trying your technique (will keep you posted). She's been having alot of problems bustin her chops with too much mouth pressure. Great job, we are looking forwared to more of your trumpet videos....:0)
Thanks for watching!...it's been four months since this comment, how are things moving along. And, if there's anything that I can help with, let me know. :)
Thank you very much for your videos! I was wondering what do you think about tongue work to move up and down in the register. things like Claude Gordon's exercises, or players like Adam Rapa
adam rapa says "its all about the tongue". getting the arch perfect is the way...charles colin "advanced lip flexibilities is a great way to get that tongue moving right.
Brilliant information 🎺🎺🎺how much of this practice do you advise per day.
If I am understanding you correctly, you cannot jump to the next slot without getting louder. What if I have to jump from C to G playing pianissimo?
Fine teacher it works
First of all thank you for your great videos! Now I know how the diaphragm really works and the amount of pressure and blowing that is required when playing high notes.
I tried exactly what you did in this video and it seems that I am on the right track. After doing this exercise, what should I do in order to improve more when playing in the high register?
Thanks alot and I really appreciate your reply!
hi...thanks for watching and commenting. practicing this technique with charles colin "advanced lip flexibilities" is the way to solidify and grow this technique so it becomes second nature. im sorry for the late reply
THANKS
Yes but my range stops at G above staff... if I try to move air faster it creates more back pressure, if I back off air speed then I stay at G. I can’t figure out how to go above G at least to C
I have been having trouble creeping a steady stream of air when I change notes wile blowing, any tips for that?
a lot of players try to achieve a steady airstream while going up and down...only the patient ones ever achieve success. try to play one note for 8 seconds or so, then move up one note (or harmonic) and hold that for 8 seconds or so. the practice of long tones is the way to develop a steady air stream. . .develop being the opperative word.
any other questions...just ask. peace.
I want to buy a trumpet online for beginners, can you suggest me one.
ooh,ooh!!!
This is great advice, but I don't know why I can't go past a D
I'm a comeback player I also played for years with mouthpiece pressure. I've been playing again for about a year but my endurance is terrible because I know I'm using too much mpc pressure because I get a ring on my upper lip. How can I reduce mpc pressure and still have a decent sound. When I try to back off my sound is wabbaly or airy.
russell straight when this happened to me, I learned that my aperture was too open...This is why the sound is airy when you back off the mouthpice pressure...your stability is in the mouthpiece pressure, not the face muscles. Too open of a hole gives a fat nice sound, but it's at the expense of using too much mouthpiece pressure (nice sweet big sound, but range, intonation, endurance, confidence & projection issues).
I'll also say that whenever you make a change on trumpet, it sounds bad for some time. You only have to persist through the badness of it and you'll come out smelling like a rose.
Thanks for watching my video too.
do you have any tips on playing with braces? i just got mine on about a month ago and I'm having trouble getting back to the higher register.
Braces are a tough cookie. I've never had them, but I imagine that because braces are temporary, you could develop your practice for this time period into focusing on other aspects of playing (scales, speed, fingering, imrov, etc.
There are so many things that make a great player, if I were in a position where I had braces, I'd focus on speed, scales and improv instead of embouchure and things that have to do with the face.
I had braces when I stated and I can't get the right pitch on any note. Plz help, gimme tips and stuffffff. srry, I have no tips for you...
i have played trumpet for around 10 years using pressure and no one really told me how to play the right way. i tryed it and its like starting over i cant play above a c. im not sure if im doing it wrong or if i just have to work on it. it also is vary crackly and sounds bad.
It does start all over again....I played symphony trumpet for 8 years. When I started this change, it took approximately 9 months before I was able t get my signature sound back. It was totally frustrating and full of uncertainty, but now that I've got it going, I'm very happy that I made the change.
Thanks for watching
This is a great tutorial man. I think your mic is doing some compression on the volume, it's kinda subtle to hear the differences in volume with it ? Maybe you could check this out ? Great job otherwise
My mistake, you knew it already ! haven't watch enough
When I ascend to the upper range I'm starting to get a double buzz or crackling in the sound. It feels easy to play up their, is it normal for your lips to do that?
It sounds like you're in the right place...if you do excersices ascending and descending, that noise will clear up...this stuff is all about getting used to the feeling of doing it. Once you have the concept together (which it sounds like you do), all you need is some intelligent practice.
+gotthesesongs i'm a trumpet beginner and i have trouble make note of it. please tell me where to put my tough as it goes to higher pitches
+Inae Jung the tongue rests softly on the inside of the teeth...as you ascend, you arch your tongue so the middle of your tongue gets closer to the roof of your mouth.
hi, do you make private lesson?
hello. your method works for me. a problem i have is as i get to abc in the ledger i am arching my tongue closer to the roof of my mouth. what happens is my tongue gets si close to the roof of my mouth it kinda blocks off the aur flow. i end up making a scratchy k sound with the airfkow. any tips .?
al pritchett focus on the tip of the tongue...does it move (change position) with the increasing arch?
no. its the middle of the tongue.
im not sure what u mean.
Let me ask this...what's your top note?...the highest note you can play
gotthesesongs c 2 octaves above middle c.
Last year, my embouchure was set pretty low, and i could play high by squeezing my lips, but I had fragile endurance. My teachers told me that. Now, I set up with a centered embouchure, but I hit high notes twice as harder as before. I dont squeeze my lips as thight that before . After the high G, It wont come out no matter how hard I blow. Also, my downward register isnt as clean as it used to be. Help ! !
Typically, if you encounter that wall that trumpet players do, you are applying to much pressure, thus stoping the vibration.
+TheAwkwardTurtleGamer I knew I was putting a lot of pressure, but I corrected it. Now, I just hit high notes very difficultly whitout and with pressure. What do you recommend me ?
+Paul Sanchez Although I'm not in a position to provide any real help, but I've heard that you lose a bit of range from decreased pressure, but gets restored and is easier after a while of getting used to it. My recommendation to you would be to NOT focus too much on range, but instead flexibility ON the staff, with little to no pressure. This helps developed range, and flexibility overtime. On top of that, try soft long tones as a warm up and slowly go up the staff while still playing quietly. Never push yourself too hard when focusing on range because you could hurt or fatigue your lips. If none of these things work after a while of testing them, see a instructor to help you. Good luck man!
+TheAwkwardTurtleGamer Thanks ! I'll try that !
paul....the best thing in the world for developing less pressure is playing middle g (long tones). it can be boring, and you don't really see how its helping, but it is like magic when you do that every day...5 minutes of just blowing soft middle g. helps with the high register, endurance, and tone quality in the low register.
Ok Thanks
Could you please make a video about triple tonguing and how you get it so fast as it has to be in for example the arutunian trumpet concerto?
I would be very great es full because this is my biggest Problem at the moment...😉
What trumpet do you use?
Hi, It's a Phaeton 2070.
How long should I do this per day?
Jannik Graser very short periods of time. maybe 5-10 minutes or so .
Ok and how long did it take for you exactly to increase your range for 2 notes ?
Very good and clear instruction - This is very interesting and I am going to try it out.
One thing, though, I can't help noticing you look a lot like Edward Snowden - am I the only one who thinks that????
What trumpet is that?
its a phaeton 2070.
Hi thank you for your wisdom, unfortunately I personally couldn't listen to it because after 5 minutes I'll I focused on was your repetitive "and em" you might look into how to present to an audience and teaching styles, I'm pretty sure your amazing at the trumpet and I would love to learn from you....
thats players.
I get really out of breath trying this.
why do plyers think that only they have the correct answer. what they fail to realize is that there are many ways to reach. your goals and it takes experimental practice to find the methods that will work for you. Have patience.
You are wrong.....less air more compression. michael barrowman new up date with leaves on youtube....dig it.
dude, ur trumpet is weird... And we know the basics man, just tell us how to get good pitch. If you have any tips for me to get the right pitch on notes than plz help. Tux!
Thx*
