"Softer you play it the stronger you get it." said Miles Davis. His classical quote was published on a cover of "Sketches of Spain" in 1959-60.

This is what my teacher teaches me. It is nice to see other trumpet player talking about this.
I was playing wrongly before, and I really begining to learn how to play correctly basing my playing mainly on breath support and I can tell you that the sound is so much richer, and the playing sensation is so great. 👍

This is invaluable information. Less pressure and more relaxed embouchure means less resistance in the instrument and thus more projection from the instrument, and hence greater efficiency and control.

Very on point and informative! Overblowing is the gateway to a whole host of trumpet problems. I developed a habit of doing it while playing in a loud soul band. Darn near ruined my playing. Thank you for this vlog and your book. I will try to schedule a few lessons soon!

Awesome stuff! Another 'less is more' thing that I've learned is that sometimes less practice = more output. Trumpet is addictive, and it's easy to fall into the trap of playing, playing, playing (and not taking any breaks!). The sad thing is that this can reinforce BAD technique, and leave you worse off than if you just played 30 mins - an hour or so a day with GOOD technique. I know this advice might sound like a broken record, but it's easy to forget! Appreciate your wisdom - you sound phenomenal!

    Nicely done and thank you!
I’ve seen dozens of trumpet videos now and this is the first time I’ve heard less is more!
I’m still a little confused about the embouchure being less though.

    Hi Frank.
Among a lot lot of different ways to play trumpet yours seame more relaxed, more "with the instrument" than others.
There are a few clips of you playing - I like "Opus for trumpet" the most, but did you use the same technique then as you advocate now?
    Sincerely
    Erik, Denmark

Curious what horn and mouthpiece you use to get that wonderful tone. Can it be achieved with a lacquered horn?

Very helpful information. Thank you very much.
By the way, what is your view regarding lip buzzing? I was under the impression that it was absolutely essential in order to learn to play the trumpet but I no longer believe that and it's changed my entire outlook in a positive way when it comes to learning.

    • @11trompie26
      @11trompie26  3 місяці тому +1

thanks for your comment. I think lip buzzing is very overrated. Of course I have also tried and used it, but cannot recognize the comparison with the actual embouchure situation. In fact, you don't have to make the lips vibrate yourself, but they will vibrate on their own by blowing a little air past the lips!

Unfortunately, I've seen a lot of players that dont know how to explain or even understand what they're doing. I can't blame them!. In my own case, it took a while after observing myself to comprehend what I was doing. I left above in my comment a link you might like to watch. Best

A man finds a genie's lantern on a beach, rubs it and a happy genie appears. "Hello lucky mortal, I am the genie of the lamp here to grant you any wish!". The man timidly replies that his one wish might be asking for too much. "Nonsense" says the genie, "I will grant you whatever it is you wish!". "Okay", says the man. "Mr. Genie, if you will, please make the trumpet a very easy thing for me to play". The genie gives the man a dirty look, cusses him out and disappears back into his lamp. Evidently the genie once tried to play the trumpet and the man's request just rubbed him the wrong way...

very nice video Frank and knowledge. I posted a video that Arturo Sandoval shared on his Fb of two classes I had days go. Although I said something about the air support I focused that day more on the importance of using the same embouchure, demonstrating it from lower double C to high double C. and a lot of that has to be with what you're saying about the air. Here is ua-cam.com/video/ZJW3oF3oSJc/v-deo.html

It is bad teaching form to show us what not to do. That is an endless task and a fool's errand, a trap for a teacher. Show someone WHAT TO DO. AND DON'T CLUTTER THEIR MIND WITH BAD ALTERNATIVES. IT IS NOT NECESSARY. THIS IS TEDIOUS. FOCUS ON CORRECT AIR AND DON'T WASTE OUR TIME ON THE ALTERNATIVES. THEY ARE USELESS!!!! Bad teaching theory. If you taught boxing, would you spend two years on how not to punch? No, WHEN you could teach how to punch in two days, by avoiding the negatives. GOSH!!! Very annoying.
