    Suggestions: Slip a piece of inner tube over the pipe to prevent scratching. This is more important if you hang the bike by the frame than if you use the seat. (I suppose you could use the skin from the snake but I'd recommend using the inner tube.) Also, consider using composite decking when the wood decking gets too many splinters. Pressure-treated southern yellow pine is really lousy decking. Composite lumber is more expensive but worth every penny.

    Me as carpenter , I think this is brilliant and pretty good way of completing the task just by yourself. My only worry is that your platform may sink into the ground because of water and soft dirt

    • @mtb2sea170
      @mtb2sea170 6 років тому +4

      I was thinking the same thing, he made a great project. Holes a little deeper, level it, then a small amount of dirt so the bottoms of the lumber are out of the concrete so water in the wood can drain through, then concrete to fill the rest of the hole. I also like other's suggestion of course gravel under the platform to reduce run off erosion.

    Seth, not sure if anyone has already suggested it, but it would be well worth it as well to put some stone crush under the platform to prevent mud build up and corrosion developing underneath. It will also help improve the drainage of the water.

    • @jonsimerly9447

  • @mostlybroadbandbandit
    @mostlybroadbandbandit 6 років тому +79

    Nice build Seth! One thing I would advise for future projects is the use of concrete around the posts you bury. Reason being is Termites and wood having the tendency to rot when buried. A bag of pre mixed Quick Crete is only a few extra dollars and makes a huge difference to the longevity of what you build. You might have thought of this and didn't want something so permanent, which is totally fine. You can also buy a coating for the ends of the posts you bury to keep them from decaying, too.
    PS: Stain or finish on the wood might not be a bad idea either. :D

      He did say he was going to sell the house though. Maybe that is why he did not do that. Much easier to dig up a bit of wood than getting concreate out of the ground if the new owner does not like it.

    Hi Seth, I made a similar design of your bike wash stand. I used old pallets that i had laying around. Luckily the pallet already had a platform like yours which makes it really easy. I then just made the bike post to hang the bike onto. This stand for me is multi purpose because it can be used for washing my bikes as well as a repair stand. which doesn’t cost anything in terms of materials.

    That set up is definitely sweet. Your carpentry work looks good and you can ask 5 carpenter's to each build a box of the same dimensions and they'll each do it a little different. Only thing I noticed that may give you trouble down the road is the posts in the ground combined with excessive water use and being a natural run off for your yard. You may end up wanting to put concrete deck footings to get those posts off the ground just to prevent premature rot and sink. But what a f#$king fantastic job 💪

  • @u15GummiBear
    @u15GummiBear 6 років тому

    Nice job! That is a super deluxe wash station.
    I sunk a post in my back yard the week I bought my house, 18 years ago for this very task. Installed a heavy duty hook, and it was off to the races.
    Over the years I've washed tons of bikes, golf clubs and garden tools with this wash station. One of the best ideas I've had. On the back side, opposite the bike hook, is the can smasher.

    Very nice. I'm thinking of doing one of my own. Some thoughts I have had:
    1. I often clean the bike with both wheels off, and as such a couple of hooks or something to hold the wheels up and out of the way would be good.
    2. Wall stand clamp to keep the bike from moving around.
    3. Grip tape on platform. It will also show oil etc less.
    4. Hot water supply. It's not a huge chore to fill the bucket inside, but when my situation ain't improving I'm tryin to murder everything movin', feel me?

    Pro tip: Use Concrete Pier Blocks with metal brackets instead of 4"x4" into the ground. If you have an uneven surface you can make a level surface with the pier blocks and cut different length 4x4 posts on top of the blocks using some twine and a level. Then build/frame the deck around those posts. It's a lot more simple. I did this when building a 10' x 12' x 12' shed. Came out perfectly square. I'd still use pier blocks on a level surface just to keep the wood out of and off of the ground for a bike washing station. Save a ton of time, hassle, and future maintenance and use pier blocks. They're cheap. If you're not using pier blocks at least used pressure treated wood to prevent rot. An untreated post in wet dirt like that won't last long.

    Great job, keep up the good work. Not sure if it has been Suggested but you should lay down some 3/4 “ mines gravel under and around your wash station , it will help reduce the erosion from the water run off.

    You might start seeing some water damage and erosion around your wash station if all your friends start using it. Consider buying a couple cubic yards of gravel. To fill in bad erosion, consider some #1 crushed stone. For finish, consider topping off with some #57 crushed stone for a nice look. #1 crushed stone is 2″ to 4″ in size -- great for filling in and preventing further erosion. #57 crushed stone is uniformly about 3/4" size - great for a stable surface to walk on. Put this on top of your #1 stone for ease of walking around.

    After Trying a lot of methods the one that works best for me is,
    Starts with mixing water with bike wash on a 2 gallon garden pump sprayer to apply the soapy water, then scrub, then hose, then use a Computer duster like the "X Power A-2" for to get the water out of those hiden spots.

      Or drill a hole through the 4x4 to slide in the pipe, add another cap on the backside and it can't slide back out. Probably cheaper to buy the extra cap and 1" hole bit, than it is to buy those flanges.

    • @jacobcloud8653
      @jacobcloud8653 6 років тому +1

      Exterior wood screws have a shear strength of around 300 pounds, EACH. Their combined shear strength is more than enough to hold that deck, a carbon bike, and about 6 full grown men. However, if you’re an overachiever like myself, then yes, notching the posts is fancy and fine as well.

    Not sure if someone else mentioned it but a water level is cheap and a much better way to level stuff like this. You can even make your own with a bucket, food color and plastic tubing.
    A chainsaw or reciprocating saw with a long blade will cut those 4x4 for you. It would be better to put the 4x4 in first and then make the platform around their measurements.
    If you want ti do this, watch some videos on making a deck then just scale it down. Chalk lines and a circular saw for the edges as an example.
    I would strap the soap thing to the stand.

    About the construction of the deck: it looks like the deck screws used to fasten the rim joists to the posts are carrying the entire load. That's pretty iffy. Probably not dangerous because it's barely off the ground, but deck screws are made for fastening, not carrying weight. Ideally, you want to fasten the joists ON TOP of the posts, so the posts carry the load. You don't have disassemble the thing, but you might want to drive a bunch of galvanized 10d nails through your rim joists into the posts for more longevity and stability. Otherwise, very clever!

    When cutting with a hand saw you should run your index finger along the groove on the handle. It helps to keep the saw straight and stops it from flexing and bending.

    Little tips although you do have spaces for drainage you should have put the deck on a little angle so all the water sitting on top of the planks runs down onto the ground, This will help if the wood bows. Second put something over the bar so it doesn't scratch anything. Third the wood you bought and used won't last because of the water/moisture either buy better lumber or buy a can of wood sealant .

    Great idea, but some things I should point out.
    If going straight into dirt, the posts should be pressure treated to prevent rot and bugs. ESPECIALLY if being used around a lot of moisture. You can get away with cedar, but only for a bit longer than other untreated woods.
    Another alternative would be to use concrete deck blocks. Those will keep your posts off the ground and would prevent sinking. The downside is that you would have to level the area before using the blocks.
