When the holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family) was alive, if Muslims had any problems, they went to the holy Prophet (pbuh&hf) who solved their problems. The holy Prophet is the final prophet. Qur'an is the final revelation, Islam is the final Deen. The question is, what about after the passing away of the holy Prophet? At whose mercy is the Muslim Ummah? Who are the Muslims supposed to refer for guidance and who is supposed to guide them? After the death of the holy Prophet (peace be upon him and his family), Muslims had two options to seek guidance from. a) Ahlulbayt of the holy Prophet b) Others. Ahlulbayt are those family members of the holy Prophet who grew up in the blessed lap of the holy Prophet (pbuh&hf). Islam, Qur'an, shariah was revealed in their house. The angels descended with blessings, mercy and salutations from Allah in their house. These are the people upon who Muslims are obligated to send their blessings and salutations in their namaz/salat. These are the people about who Allah (swt) Himself testifies of their purity, infallibility and perfection in chapter 33 verse 33. Amongst the ahlulbayt are people like Ali, the gateway to the city of knowledge. Lady of the Light, hazrat Fatimah Zahra, the Princess of the women of paradise, two Princes of the youths of paradise, Imam Hasan and Imam Husain (peace and blessings of Allah be upon them all). Who can understand Islam, Qur'an, shariah and the sunnah of the holy Prophet better than them? This is why the holy Prophet (pbuh&hf) left behind him the Book of Allah, the holy Qur'an and his ahlulbayt. With the rest, we are not sure of the state of their iman, their source of knowledge and understanding of Islam, Qur'an, shariah, sunnah of the holy Prophet, etc. Today, whatever we know as halal or haram, permissible or impermissible, etc. it all depends upon your source of knowledge. The ahlulbayt acquired their knowledge directly from the holy Prophet and therefore the question of its authenticity does not arise. The four Sunni Imams appeared almost after a century after the holy Prophet passed away. What do you expect to achieve from someone who was not even born during the time of the holy Prophet, let alone seeing him or meeting him?
Assalamu Alaikum Brother! Regarding your first question, where we should seek guidance from if the Prophet (PBUH) is not among us anymore. The answer is rather simple yet complex at the same time The Book that will guide humankind until the day of Judgement is the Qur'an. It is the biggest mercy of Allah (SWT) upon humankind, revealed to the best of creations, the mercy to the worlds Muhammad (PBUH) This is where we seek guidance, and this is the ultimate Truth May Allah (SWT) keep us on the straight path and grant all of us the highest gardens of Firdaus
