My books and videos are all grounded in what I actually do, I make sure you can see the evidence. For example if I suggest sowing carrots in November, take a look at my monthly tours to see them growing and my harvest videos for May to see the actual results. I'm not just about regurgitaing information from the backs of seed packets!
Just because all my resources are 'free of charge', to everyone, doesn't mean they aren't good quality. My objective is to make sure that there's no need to be rich to get access to great gardening information. I do however have a lot of costs to cover and my time is valuable to me, so please consider supporting me at www.buymeacoff...
Thanks, Steve . we have made all our beds like yours, including the coldframe.
Also, we have done hinged lids with poly tunnels.
We came to your open day last year and spent about 45 minutes chatting to you 😊
So nice to hear from you and I hope they are working out well for you Russell : All the best - Steve
Thank you. I am very much enjoying the expanded content.🎉
Another excellent video and all those small details like stainless steel screws are well worth the money and using treated timbers and I would expect them to last 20 years with a coat of woodstain every few years.I always
Run an angle grinder on the cut ends as this will close off the end grains.
This video will be perfect for someone starting off so well done Steve👍.
All the best Ian.
The bases in contact with the soil last about 20, but the tops will last a lot longer as you say
Wow u made that look really easy, when I built mine it was hard work lol wish I had seen this lol
Fantastic video 😊
Thanks Steve visual aids help me learn and I need to build some frames, then I will have to make some tops so will check out yr other videos and ebook.
good show, cheers Steve
I used a method called Shou Sugi Ban, originating in 18th century Japan the method of preserving wood by charring it with fire. The wood is burned until the surface is charred and then coated in natural oil. I used a blow torch and coated it with pure tung oil. It was fun to make and the timber really soaks the oil up and looks amazing. I've read it should last between 80 - 120 years haha.
I used untreated scaffolding boards to build it.
@@Alexxx---101 wish I had known about this 10 years ago 🙁
I've seen that method used many times on just about every DIY show, looks good : All the best - Steve
@@MuddyBootz Glad you found it useful.
Thank you so much for this Steve, seeing you actually build the cold frame is really helpful (even though your written instructions are excellent!) 🙂
Cheers Steve, it was your channel I used to find out how to create a best raised bed for home here. Although my wood working skills are a bit rusty, well non existent tbh, I managed my first cold frame out of decking boards we had over. They frame is two years old now and with its polythene hinged top and a removable hooped top, this bed all is useable all year round. We continued with raised beds onto out allotment and it’s been an extremely productive site. We have. 14 beds now 😮, so thank you for sharing.
Thanks for the feedback and so great that it's working well for you : All the best - Steve
Hi Steve,
Thank you for the fabulous video, lm hoping to make one. Is it possible you could do a video for making the top, lm rather a visual learner!
I really enjoy all your videos, you are very aspiring, many thanks 🙏🌺
I will do a video, when I make the tops for this bed, but I'm in the middle of a big project right now. My ebook is full of pictures of how to do it though : All the best - Steve
Hi Steve, Thank´s for sharing your experiences!
👍👍👍👍
Nice job Steve, I totally agree about standardising bed sizes for convenience ( I guess the is our aero engineering background 🤣) one regret I have when building mine was I didn’t line the inners with DPM. Is this something you have considered?
Cheers… Nigel
I didn't at the time Nigel, because 7 years ago I wasn't really aware of the options. In the end it's not mattered much because the raised bed sections, which are in contact with the soil, are surrounded by wood chip that's 6" deep now (raised to prevent flooding) so the wood really serves very little purpose. The cold frame tops don't touch soil or wood chip so there's no sign of rotting there. I'm mulling over sandwiching a 3" strip of DPM between the raised bed top and the coldframe tops, to prevent rot moving upwards : All the best - Steve
What’s DPM please 😬
@@lisas7097 Damp Proof Membrane 😊👍🏻
@@MuddyBootz Thank you 😀
