  • This video shows you how to make a Cold frame / Seed Propagator for your garden plants. It's great for protecting delicate plants in the winter but also great for germinating seeds in the warmer months. As in most of my videos I try to use 100% recycled materials.

    Such a great way to recycle old pallets and bits and bobs off old furniture, I always take the hard wear off any old bits. I can't believe how many butterflys are in your garden 😂

    Thank you for this tutorial. I want to build some of these for my wife to grow plants in in the winter. I've collected a lot of wood from pallets. I liked the ideas of making the roof supports out of scrap woods.

    Great video. I am an older woman and want to make one of these to put on top of one of my raised beds so I can get some plants started. Right now I have 5' of snow covering my garden, but this would be a great project to build now so come March I can start some things in the bed. You've made the instructions very clear for me and I think I could do this all by myself with your video. Thanks so much.

      I realize it’s been 10mons since you wrote this but thought I’d add to it. If you’re not able to go with the lid to your raised bed, maybe try adding a few lengths of pvc pipe tucked into one side then the other. Check out the plastic coverings in the paint area of a local home improvement store. I have 3 or 6mil. Wish I could remember exactly. I bought a couple containers of medium plastic clamps from Harbor Freight Store to clamp the plastic covering to the pvc pipes. My husband cut up a pipe I’d kept around & wouldn’t let him throw it out. He drove them down on all four corners of my raised bed to allow me to clamp further down on the sides. I use a clamp on each end to close up the sides at night. These are just clamped to the side of the raised bed while leaving a bit of slack in the plastic. It had gotten so late in the season before I made it around to covering the raised bed we were short on time. Im in the southern US where we have longer growing seasons. I keep tomatoes growing well into November, sometimes even early December. This year brought even milder weather late in the year. It’s January now & we have only just in the last couple weeks had temps low enough to wear light to medium weight jackets.
      Anyhow, I hope this helps someone else. I’ve already started dear hubby on the hunt for a small window. His best friend runs across interesting finds all the time. Fingers crossed. I’d love to have a cold box to harden off seedlings in addition to what little room remains in my raised bed. (It’s a 4’ x 8’ bed raised 12”-15” inches to protect my salad mix greens from rabbits.)

    Great video, gonna get started today! The house we moved into last year has a ton of old pallet wood and scrap wood left in the basement, as well as a few old windows I could use as the roof. I’m certainly no carpenter, but I’ve been looking for something like this to help my peppers have a little bit longer of a growing season and I think I could handle building a small cold frame. Thanks!

    Great tutorial. I have an acrylic type plastic for my lid. Can I screw it on top like you did or should I make a frame for it? I wondered if it would crack if I did that. Also, loved the can tie idea to keep it from getting wind blown.
    Thank you

    • @PhillWyattProjects
      @PhillWyattProjects  3 роки тому +2

      Thank you :) Yes you could do that with the acrylic although make sure to drill pilot holes in the acrylic first and try not to screw down too hard to prevent cracking.

    Magic mate. Crackin' vid. Made one 2 years ago. Yours far superior. Used heavy duty poly for the lid 'cos although I have loads of glass I don't know how to make a frame to hold it. Anybody educate me? McIntyre

      Thanks very much mate 👍 I'm not sure about glass. To be honest I've never made a frame for glass that would be new for me.

    Great video. But tip for cold frames, never raise them off the ground with feet like that as slugs will get in and devastate your young plants. It needs to be flush to the ground. It also defeats the purpose of the cold frame holding in the heat and humidity x

    It's very small. I just built one out of scrap wood from the building of our house and it is 1 metre wide and 90 cms deep. Hoping it does the trick but I'm concerned about keeping woodlice out as they are a real pest in our area. They attack the roots of plants so I want to make the cold frame as sealed as possible. Looking for base ideas. Cheers.

    • @PhillWyattProjects
      @PhillWyattProjects  2 роки тому +2

      Would have made a big one but garden is only small. Hmm plastic or metal base maybe to deter the woodlice?

    • @allingtonmarakan6639

      @@PhillWyattProjects I see. I was thinking of concrete slabs and a layer of caulk between the wood and the slabs. Your wee cold frame looks great. Mine is bigger but not a straight line on it, lol.
