DK’94 is probably one of if not my favorite game boy game ever, such a fun puzzle game that i hear nobody talk about. i genuinely think mario’s movement in the game is on par with odyssey.
I heard from that game first from a cover of the showdown of the tower theme cuz it was awesome
Did you forget about Antdude?
Is a really good Gameboy gameboy game.
It's a fucking masterpiece.
This was the first video game I ever owned. I bought it because I thought it was a Mario game, and was initially incredibly disappointed that it wasn't the game I thought it was. I grew to love it within a few days, though.
The humor was especially on point this episode. Also, I definitely did not expect dying in Donkey Kong 3 to be so brutal, what the hell.
Right lmao this is one of my new favorite vids of his
This style of humor kinda reminds me of Scott the Woz, which is a good thing.
fucking love this video
You know what they say, creativity comes out of limitation. These games are about as simple as you can get, and what we got was a really funny episode.
I think he probably put a bit more EXTRA effort on the humor because he was presenting this at a convention. Not to say that Johnny isn’t funny all the time or doesn’t try, but I think for this video (along with say his Knuckles Chaotix and Mega Man X reviews which he also presented at past TMG cons), he put a bit more emphasis on empty spots where he could get BIG laughs from crowds.
Damn, I forget the user’s name but someone already uploaded a YT video of Johnny’s whole Too Many Games 2022 Panel before this video was uploaded. For anyone who’s interested I highly recommend you watching that to get an example when I’m talking about above.
Gotta love how Mario went from dropping 2m and suffering cardiac arrest to not being afraid to possess flying enemies like Bullet Bills. You live and you learn
It's strange that according to one of the Mario & Sonic Olympic Games (even though it's unlikely that this is canon) one of the toads stated that Mario "gained" his superhuman powers by climbing the skyscrapers while saving Pauline.
@@lordkaijux5262 Must've been a Black Panther-style trial where he was stripped of his superhuman jumping abilities and was put through trials to earn his title of the Jumpman lol

Johnny, this has nothing to do with the subject of the video, but can I just say how much I enjoy and appreciate your content? I love your cheeky, understated humour and everyman style. You're like a comfort blanket of stability in a very chaotic world.
Exactly how I feel about his videos.
@@thatkidroshay I think the reason why the character is named Donkey, is because the word as the letters K,O, and N. Which those three letters would also be in the world (Kong).

Honestly I can't wait until he gets to the new DKC games. I'm always curious to hear people's in-depth opinions on DKCR. It's a bit of a middle child at this point due to DKCTF.
Ive been patiently waiting for this for years
The cutaway gags in this video were hilarious, Johnny. Thank you for continuing to deliver some of the best game review content on the internet.
Johnny tackling Donkey Kong??? He’s just knocking a lot off the ole bucket list this year eh?? :)
Donkey Kong (original early 80s trilogy): Didn’t age the best (the gameplay had even a loveable character like Mario off to a rough start with his over-sensitivity, the music (while nostalgically 8-bit) can be a bit repetitive!. And yet, slightly later ports of this game never improved upon what was wrong with the original.)
Donkey Kong 4 (aka Donkey Kong ‘94): Unlike the rest because of its much more advanced (even for its time) presentation with a ton of cartoonish life put into it and very detailed levels (plus while it’s not the first one to make Pauline more memorable than ever before (Super Mario Odyssey 1… the. Mario Tennis Aces and Mario Golf: Super Rush), it’s definitely the first one to sport her attractive design with long brown hair, especially in porns (rizdraws’s depiction of Peach and Pauline having gay sex, daijovuvu’s depiction of Pauline on a nude beach (which feels like a tribute to Sigurd Hosenfeld’s drawings of Mario princesses on a nude beach made over a decade ago), etc) where she also has thick feminine thighs, a round booty, a vagina and a completely bottomless body to make her even sexier than her post-1993 self. It really makes us wonder if Mario was either cheating on both of them (formerly Pauline and currently Peach) at different times or if he has more than one girlfriend being, at the minimum, both of them. Because earlier in the comment, I said that Mario would be one of my favourite characters even though I thought Peach and Pauline were almost there (because despite being able to play like athletes, they would also act like damsels in distress, which is what makes us like Daisy and especially Rosalina and most other Mario characters in general all the more), I would like to think of it as the latter)
*Those are my thoughts on the Donkey Kong main games before It breathed new life with the Donkey Kong Country trilogy in the mid 1990s (mid 2000s as the GBA versions and late 1990s as the Donkey Kong Land trilogy), same as SCMJ’s*

7:32 Best gag right here.
I did NOT expect you to talk about DK '94, definitely up there as one of my favorite 2D platformers
I did. I heard him talk about that game more than once with both SGB and BSC.
10:44 I've never seen the death animation! That was both hilarious and horrifying!
6:22 Listen, the arcade I work at has a Congo Bongo machine and I can safely say it is NOT a bootleg. It's really fun, actually! Obviously inspired by Donkey Kong in some ways, but I think it expands on the concept more with the isometric perspective and more unique obstacles. Anyway, that's my take on a single mention of Congo Bongo in a Donkey Kong video-
Even so, it’s kinda weird how this is where Nintendo and SEGA’s rivalry began, because SEGA wanted to copy off the success of others, but not understanding what made those games good.
The scientist on the cover looks like Nigel Thornberry
Funny fact, Congo Bongo was made by Sega alongside the original crew that helped Nintendo get off the ground, Ikegami Shushinki

I first bought Donkey Kong 94 on my 3DS expecting the same arcade game... naturally the Wham Shot of DK taking Pauline and hightailing it after 100M blew me away. Going through that game was an adventure, and Junior joining in was also a loop thrower. Purely a fun experience from start to finish, and one of my favorite games.
I fucking love the moves Mario can do in DK '94, because the game is more focused on super tight platforming than the Super Mario games it makes it really fun to pull off all the backflips and shit. If the Switch would get a Game Boy online service then I really hope this game would've been included.
0:12 "You know that I'm right." Well, yeah, but you don't have to say it.

Donkey Kong 3 is an underrated mess of a masterpiece. I love it and I'm genuinely surprised that you have any experience with this neat game, not to mention it being your first DK exposure! Jump Man is cool and I am jealous of his mustache, but I mean dang, for a guy who keeps getting drank like water by fleas, Stanley has definitely got something going for him too
When I was a kid, probably about seven or eight, I actually stumbled upon this arcade cabinet at a corner store near the beach somewhere in Jacksonville, North Carolina. And I was kind of enamored with the game after that. The soundtrack definitely helped.
And I was already exposed to the first two games beforehand, so I was like, "there was a *_third_* donkey Kong game I didn't know about?"

I Wonder will Donkey Kong 64 drive Johnny to Alcohol 😂😂😂
@@kingslayer2999 People complain about DK 64's backtracking!!!!!
Donkey Kong 94 was such a damn treat. I got it as a stocking stuffer gift that Christmas and initially didn't pay it much mind as I had much bigger fish to fry. Final Fantasy 3/6 and Super Metroid also released that year, and I was waist deep into both.
A family road trip shortly after that holiday season changed my mind. The carrying case for my Game Boy at the time held 4 games (the 5th being in the unit), and my typical lineup was usually Tetris, Final Fantasy Adventure, Final Fantasy Legend, Final Fantasy Legend 2, and Metroid 2. I figured since it was new, I'd give DK a run while we were on the road. None of the other games even touched the old brick for at least two weeks after that. The game was just so damn fun, and the cheesy little bits were good for a quick chuckle. To this day, DK94 remains one of my favorites from the original green and grey brick.
Even though this was before my time, I've learned that the 80's was a very turbulent period for arcades, and gaming as a whole.
It was also the time where games tended to get a little weird sometimes, such as classic Donkey Kong, because the "sequels" they made were weird.
Man the comedic timing in this one is great! Well done John!

Ah, so this is what we missed if we didn’t go to TooManyGames. Exciting! Makes me wonder, though, are you gonna cover the Mario Vs. Donkey Kong games? They’re technically Kong games with Mario spins and fun gimmicks. I sure like them
I do like Mario vs Donkey Kong, But I just don't think it's as good as Donkey Kong 94... And the rest of the games are nothing but Lemmings.
I'd say the first one fits because its literally the sequel to DK94.
The others are more Mario & Wario.
You better dance to the DK Rap when you get to the DK64 review...
And if he doesn't then what would happen?
@@lordkaijux5262 He's too out of shape to dance. After what happened with Sonic Free Riders he doesn't want to do something like that again.
The fact that Universal tried to sue Nintendo back then for using the Kong name is hilarious in hindsight when you consider that they're making a movie and fucking amusement parks together now.
I'm 20 years old, and my first ever Donkey Kong game was Donkey Kong Country Returns for the Wii, which my dad initially bought for himself because he loved the original SNES game in the 90s, but I fell in love with the Donkey Kong Country series through it. But man, the OG Donkey Kong, in all its simplicity, is such a brilliant little game. I love it. It's so addictive.
Donkey Kong Jr. and Donkey Kong 3 are good too, but the OG is in a class of its own. Really love the fact that I can play the NES and arcade versions on my Switch. I still think it's a lot of fun.
Man i saw the How High Can You Get? joke coming a mile away but i still laughed. Well done.
I think this breaks the record of being the oldest game Johnny’s reviewed

Donkey Kong 94 is such an amazing game. And a really great time waster. It holds the honor as one of my first two GB games (along with Link’s Awakening).
6:08: That’s meant to be artwork for Mr. Do’s Castle; those are suppose to be unicorns (yes, the same type of monster Ghosts and Goblins have), and Mr. Do carries a hammer to knock cherry platforms down.
Johnny paying more respect to Donkey Kong by Expanding his Dong than Nintendo has the last few years.
It's funny in a way, I was thinking for a little while "I'm surprised that John hasn't covered any Donkey Kong games considering how highly he praises them" and then almost like magic this video drops. Fantastic as always man, can't wait to see the DKC reviews!!
Supposedly Mario was originally going to have various roles throughout Nintendo games. Like one game he could be the player, while in the next game he is the villain, or he will simply be a cameo appearance. Which explains why Mario is the villain in DK jr. and the cameo appearance was a thing in many Nintendo games. But I think Mario Bros was the first time where he was actually meant to be a more concert character.
And considering how many hats he used to were back in the Black Box days...
There's a reason why I always wear his construction outfit whenever I go to the Wrecking Crew stage in Smash.
The best thing I learned with DK94 is that if you get to close to DK he will pick you up and violently shake you then slam you into the ground killing you. Seriously the special death animations in DK94 were insane.
The story I heard was in an episode of Icons from Miyamoto himself was that they needed a name so he looked the dictionary and saw Donkey, that word is also a synonym for Stubborn and the rest is history.
I'm surprised John didn't mention Mario vs. Donkey Kong for the GBA, which is basically an updated GB DK. He'll friggin' love that game assuming he's never played it yet.
I would assume those will be covered after the SNES Country games, DK Land, and 64. Maybe Diddy Kong Racing.
Ikr I wish they remastered it
I'm so happy Johnny is finally covering Donkey Kong. My favorite UA-camr is covering one of my favorite franchises, can't wait when he gets to Tropical Freeze
Holy shit Johnny, you’ve been absolutely on fire with the humor lately. Every recent video has made me laugh my ass off, keep up the good shit.

0:09 jesus christ john i just started the video you didn't have to make it so personal 💀
Holy cow, Donkey Kong 94 looks GORGEOUS for the Game Boy.
That spritework, those animations, just...mwah!
5:50 That looks like a DS... that looks almost just like a DS! Are you telling me, that the concept of a handheld, with two screens, and folds like a book, was around since the 80's!?
That was the first thing i thought of the first time i laid eyes on a DS, because i used to own that Donkey Kong Game&Watch when I was a kid.
Stanley's dance just tickles me, it's amazing
I swear Johnny's more recent reviews have been delightfully spot on in terms of humor.
Not gonna lie, that jump cut away with the smash cut is pure genius. Props Johnny, had me smiling ear to ear
Fun fact, there are 2 ways to beat every stage in donkey Kong 3: You can either blow smoke up Donkey's ass and force him back out of the rooftop, or you can kill all of the insects in those hives, because there is indeed a finite number of them. You know you've almost killed them all when the background music changes. But once you get to stage 3, the only way to beat that stage is to Force Donkey Kong to stick his head into the beehive.
Hearing the sentence "small indie developer Shigeru Miyamoto" nearly made me laugh out loud
I guess Rareware's take on the story of Donkey Kong is that Cranky Kong was the original Donkey Kong and Jr. grew up to be Donkey Kong in the Country games.
10:47 Lol that face without the beard is just priceless. 🤣
Good thing they dialed some stuff back on the Game Boy version, cause the series was starting to look darker each time.
From kidnapping in the first game, to mentally and immorally messing with a child while still kidnapping in the 2nd, to literal horror movie deaths in the 3rd.
“The girl is just called Lady.”
Capcom in 2005: “Write that down, write that down!”
Man I totally forgot this marathon was coming up, though I'm glad to see you do it! This was a long time coming and these games deserve recognition. A bit surprised you didn't jump straight into Country but it makes sense.
Man, I was shocked on how DK 94 feels so smooth. The backflip in particular feels amazing and I kinda wish there were more pure platforming levels because flipping through platform to platform feels so satisfying. Makes me wish that it was in the NSMB games, or that it was a style or power up in Mario Maker 2.
Stanley reminds me so much of Fix it Felix Jr. in Wreck It Ralph, which makes sense because Wreck It Ralph (the game in the movie, not the movie itself or the game based on the movie which is an entirely different game than the one presented in the movie) seems to be based on the original Donkey Kong... it's pretty much what would happen if you turned Donkey Kong into a human and the construction site was completely finished and there was an apartment building in its place.
It was still disappointing that Mario never appeared in Wreck It Ralph.
@@lordkaijux5262 Yeah, his name was mentioned in the apartment party scene though I think, if I remember right. Weren't there talks about him appearing in the sequel? What happened to that? Did Nintendo end up declining?
So when John loses his beard, he also loses his filter and becomes a lot more unhinged. I fuck with it.
I've been on a Johnny marathon. I was literally just watching X7 and then I get this. Genuinely still laughing at the 'Burn to the ground' bit. x'D
Worth noting that DK94 acts as a precursor to the Mario vs DK series, and is considered by many fans as the "true" first game. Both it and the one on GBA are a good time.
So yeah, it's cool that we're getting a remake of the GBA game. Maybe we can get more MvsDK games like this in the future, rather than the Mini style that IMO got very stale.
I'm beyond stoked that you're finally looking at Donkey Kong Country after all these years. Been looking forward to this with great anticipation!
Very nice of you to review Cranky Kong's games.
The TMG theater experience of this was absolutely incredible. I've always loved the humor in your videos, but that was the first time I was laughing out loud at a constant rate.
