  • With the promise of up to $6 million worth of Bitcoin locked on this Samsung Galaxy phone, it was a challenge we couldn't refuse. In this episode, Joe moves his lab to a Seattle hotel room to hack the phone live with owner Lavar, a transit operator, and his friend Jon. Was the adventure worth it!?

Yeah, the sucky part was we could see the ending from a mile away. There's loads of people out there with supposed Btc from "the early days" but it comes down to just a few coins from only a few years ago.
There's a huge difference between spending $900 in 2012-ish to buy 15 coins, compared to spending $400 in 2017-ish to buy 0.15 coins. And then another huge difference trading them for $60k versus $20k per coin. One amounts to roughly $1Million, the other to $3,000.
Or in this case, difference between $6Million versus $600.

Honestly, probably because it feels like it's produced by the same studio doing every formulated reality show on network television. It's a topic tech enthusiasts, engineers, programmers, etc. would love to see in detail but it's edited like an episode of Hoarders and some DIY makeover show. It tries to appeal to a wide audience and checks a lot of boxes while not really focusing on any of them.
I'm not saying it's bad or necessarily an issue. It's obviously pulling in views but it's basically the vanilla ice cream of content creation. He needs to figure out who his audience is.
      Just my two cents.

Silliness. There was never any chance there was $6million on it. Late 2013 bitcoin was was already above $100, so a couple grand is only maybe 20 bitcoin. A 'current' price of $30k each, so 20 bitcoin is $600k. Nice, but 1/10th of the 6mil from the title. Unless by a couple thousand he meant 20,000.
Not only did he forget the password. He also forget the year and that he already sold bitcoin. 0.003 bitcoin in July 2016 is only ~$2. Guessing from the green & red in the transaction history it looks like he probably bought a couple grand worth of bitcoin and then sold it over the next couple weeks because he got scared when started going down. ~10% over that period.

Many lessons for noob crypto investors here. 1) Never leave big crypto investments in the wallet of a marketplace where you bought it, they can go down and you can lose everything. 2) Take note of how much crypto you have, not in your fiat currency but the exact amount of that specific cryptocurrency. That way even if you forget passwords or lose devices, you can know how much is in there and can calculate exactly how much it would be worth. 3) Save the blockchain transaction ID, that's public information, so again, even if you get locked out of your wallet, you have a way of knowing how much you had and how much that's worth now.
