  • How do dreams influence and reflect our spiritual beliefs and experiences across different cultures and historical periods, and what does scientific research reveal about this relationship?
Kelly Bulkeley, PhD, is a global expert on dreaming and the psychology of religion. We explore his latest book "The Spirituality of Dreaming: Unlocking the Wisdom of Our Sleeping Selves."
Dreams universally function as essential gateways to spiritual understanding, a truth echoed across cultures and eras. Modern sleep and dream research confront and expand upon the traditional views revealing a more complex nature of dreams. These dreams, whether as visitations, flights, or nightmares, reflect our existential questions and actively shape religious beliefs and practices. Merging empirical research with mystical interpretations, dreams are clearly more than mere reflections of waking life; they are direct conduits to deep spiritual insights.
Prepare to discover who historically engaged with dreams in spiritual contexts; when these interpretations have been significant, from ancient times to the present; how dreams connect with spiritual experiences, often seen as divine messages or reflections of the soul; what types of dreams, such as visitation or flying dreams, are spiritually significant; where across different cultures and traditions dreams are valued for their spiritual implications; whether modern scientific research supports historical beliefs about the spiritual nature of dreams; which aspects of dreaming, like vividness and metaphorical content, shape religious beliefs; and why dreams remain a source of intrigue in understanding human spirituality and its relation to the divine…..and so much more…..

This episode is so helpful to me, after a NDE in 2017 and many dreams and real life experiences after that which have been hard to navigate, and find a way to listen to and make part of my life. I felt an urgent need to let it all speak to me and be changed by it, but I have struggled to find a way. This episode gave me an angle that opened a new way of listening and inviting my dreams and I am finding a new sense of creativity in how to integrate these realms of my life more. So grateful for this podcast ❤🙏🏻

Wow! You've opened Pandora's box on the sands of the beach in the Portland, Oregon area with your interview with Kelly Bulkeley! Creating a thread or a tiny string which connects all of your listeners around the world with the importance of overriding some aspects of AI's Emergence which seems to be taking over many people's of many ages personal journey's to the extent that their unable to connect and dialogue with their own Unconscious Connection with being alive.
What is the purpose of being Alive? This is a very personal question that each individual can find an answer to if they get in touch with their DREAMS.

Thank goodness for you guys, I feel understood every time I watch your videos. I'm working on the final touches of a memoir I've been writing for the past 10 years, and I recently had it edited. In the book, I share some of my dreams because they relate to the self reflection aspect of the memoir. The editor I hired, after finishing the manuscript, told me that he thinks I should get rid of some of the dreams in the book because there are too many of them and it seems like I'm just "making them up". He says that I should write sort of justification in my introduction for including the dreams, because most people don't remember their dreams. In fact there are only a few dreams in the book, but it wasn't until now that I'm realizing how pathetic dreams seem to many in this modern culture. I decided I'm not getting rid of the dreams in the book, but hopefully the publisher will agree with me.

That’s so interesting because I have been in dream groups and I don’t have a clue if everyone in the group loved me or not. I think most of them liked me well enough as I liked them. I will be in groups sharing dreams again because the process of sharing about it seems to stimulate my dreams.

I’m Bulgarian by birth. I was raised with sharing dreams (strictly in the afternoon). According to my family, sharing a dream even with the ones closest to us, is not a good omen in the morning. More than half of my life spent in the US now and I miss sharing my dreams. It’s simply not accepted or understood. My mother still calls me often announcing hers…go figure.

The mentioned dream within a dream within a dream is wonderful. The imagery of transcendence, death and care via the Kali figure... 😯
I relate so much to this conversation. My dreams have been a portal to my future, to preparing me for an impending ego death and to get information from interplanetary beings. As a kid I knew my dreams were fun but in my 30s I recognized their great …. Power? I dunno. I wish we talked more about this and one day I hope to share my story and dreams with people who are interested in listening and sharing

I see the great value of this discussion the expressed realization that society needs to appreciate and engage in a back and forth dialog with the unconscious via dreams. I see a danger in accessing the dreams of others without personal associations or symbolic understanding. There is a common understanding about presenting and reviewing psychic material -- that more than three examples tends to overwhelm the psyche. I have not accessed Elsewhere AI dream journal app but I was not surprised to hear Lisa's assessment of the AI interpretation -- lacking in depth and richness. That is my experience in reviewing AI products -- it raises material or notions an individual ego may not have thought of but the product is ultimately stiff and stifling to creativity. With the advent and use of AI, I believe we need a new conception -- definition -- understanding of creativity. A dream is ultimately a statement revealing the creativity of the psyche -- like art, an utterance of the soul.

In the biblical language it will say things like Abraham went down into Egypt, or Abraham went up from Egypt , if Josef was not thrust Down into the pit he would not have been raised up in Egypt.

I had a busy day yesterday; a long day. I forced myself to go to a seminar on balancing hormones given by a naturopathic doctor last evening. Drove home in the snow. Had a dream of watching a tall fir tree on the top of a mountain quietly and slowly loading up with snow. Until it slowly tilted and broke at its half point. I am quietly growing old. I can no longer keep up with my days. I feel like it’s too late with so many things. … love old gnarly trees…alone on a top of a hill. I just wonder if the tree will grow a thick burst of new shoots at the top. Or invite old birds to roost.

What a great discussion and guest. I am now wondering though….. if so many people ask how to remember their dreams, yet I have numerous, vivid, emotional dreams every night of my life; is there something I should be concern about? Seriously?

So glad I came across this channel. In my own life, it's the actual visions I have for my life, not necessarily the sleep time dreams, that seem to be sabotaged by some sort of indefinable shadow. There are challenges in things that I can isolate and observe, but it's the unseen barriers that I'm having trouble with. After all, I can do something about the things I can see.

    I had this dream:
I went sleeping while listening to the basics of shamanism. I had the most amazing dream.
I went to a Mayan soccer game, it ended with 4-2. It was the end of days. I was with friends and we went for some candy, i paid 2,75 and gave the attendant 0,25 tip. I had bought liquid licorice, when drinking it i uncovered a black cube in the licorice. We needed to make pace cause we were to die soon.
We where riding our bikes and i see Nico my friend getting stuck on the gate cause his backpack was too large. We went to my brother's party, I was in a garden with a round bench around a three. 3 woman where laying in a circle on the bench, one of them was angry and the other didnt see me. Maxime was.
It was time to go, we went on our bikes towards two ships. When arriving it went vague. 2 atomic bombs had dropped.
Suddenly we were radioactive glowing and resonating and we went in a line spiraling upwards. We where in a big cinema and people not radioactive were collectively just watching the screen and enjoying it. There was a song playing 'we are the Universe'
When waking up I had a song in my head. 'Ben' from Michael Jackson. Then I went out for a walk.
For me this felt like a spiritual dream. Im far from being there now and having such dreams but there is a longing to get there again.
    Thank you.

If I try to interpreted my dream, I think about that the reward from sinning is death. Im not a religious person. Always found my dreams interesting and tried to remember them. I would describe myself who doesnt really know himself. 40, no job, no wife, addicted and laying in bed all day.

Early on in turning my attention to recalling dreams around thirty years ago, I had a dream in which the unconscious plafully let me know that the way in which I interpreted reality was not its way by presenting the following dream:
I was above two aircraft which were flying both in the same direction. They were of the older delta wing fighter jet type and both decorated with colorful, blue and green psychedelic-like patterning. That certainly wasn't how I thought delta wing fighter jets should be painted. The one just below me appeared much larger than the other which was below but not directly in line, and appeared to be much farther away.
I thought, that's obviously two jets flying at different altitudes. A voice spoke up and said "No that's an adult and an adolescent."

A while ago I had a conversation with a psychology student. She was impressed how much I knew about psychology, and I told her that I had studied some jungian psychology (and I mentioned also -This jungian life- by the way🙂). O yes, but that is paranormal, uh?So we got at the subject of dreams, and she said -wouldn' t it be nice when you got connected to a machine, sothat you could view your dreams on a screen, with a grimace expressing the question why nature has made it so troublesome to remember our dreams if they are that important. I answered her that it is like taking pictures before there was the smartphone. You had a photo album and you treasured those photos, while nowadays they disappear somewhere on a harddisk. However, I am not sure about that answer.

With regards to the dream interpretation at the end of this video, what about the relationship of the young man to the responsibility of the room being trashed. He knows that somehow he is responsible but he also knows that the blue figure is also responsible. Then to move his relationship with the blue figure forward he smacks them. Sort of like when someone smacks their friend to help them move forward out of a state of hysteria. So his relationship to the responsibility of the destructive event is shared with this blue figure but also it's like is he smacking the blue figure or is he smacking himself indirectly? Also what about an extraterrestrial interpretation of the female figure? I've been reading a lot about UFOs recently so that immediately popped out to me more so than other more pop cultural interpretation.an "alien" visitor or intrusion.

Also the jelly beans, given that he does not like jelly beans, could simply be a mechanism for awakening within the dream. I'm not a trained Jungian psychologist so I don't know if it's appropriate to disregard the meaning or potential meaning of some element of a dream in favor of some potential mechanical function

I think dreams can help us to stay in touch with our deeper and unknown parts of ourselves. My East Indian teacher took me to the Astral plane and he told me that is not the ultimate place we should be but it is another dimension and there is no reason not to explore it anymore than there is something wrong with exploring this plane we are in on earth. He said it is important to remember that exploring the astral plane is not the purpose of the meditation practice but it is ok to explore it and learn about ourselves. I have also worked with Native American people to whom dreams are important messages from spirit.
