AT HOME IN OUR BODIES: Incarnation & Individuation

  • Jung teaches that soul and spirit have a home in a living body, the font of psyche’s images and means of their incarnation in the world. Embodiment is the ground of being, and engaging the tension between instinct and archetype shapes consciousness and character. Jung identified five instincts: creativity, movement, sexuality/eros, hunger in its many manifestations, and the ability to reflect and make meaning. If Pinocchio’s task was to humanize his instincts, much of modern man’s mission may be to re-establish vibrant connection with instinctual life. Jung says, “The archetype as an image of instinct is a spiritual goal toward which the whole nature of man strives; it is the sea to which all rivers wend their way, the prize which the hero wrests from the fight with the dragon.” The rigorous refining of instinct through embodied, conscious action is the path toward wholeness.
    HERE'S THE DREAM WE ANALYZE:
"I was waiting for a young man to pick me up for our second date, but he was late. I was in a park and there was a fair, and I ran into some of my childhood friends who were quite surprised about my date. So, they started harassing me with questions about who he was and, mostly, why he was late. I didn't have his phone number, so I didn't know. I had with me a backpack, laptop, kindle, handbag, another bag and my stuff kept falling on the ground, and I had to pick it up over and over. It was raining hard, hours had passed and I decided to walk through the fair. There I bought a unicorn-shaped mug, that immediately fell off my hands and became ash as it hit the ground. I was tired and cold and went sitting under a large tree. In the tall grass, emerged a group of people who were shooting at wild ducks."

With the dream at the end, and the dreamer rather suddenly 'walking through a fair', I began yelling at my laptop "A fair? AFFAIR! AFFAIR!"
I feel the dreamer's inner belief is that a relationship can never work, so an 'affair' is an inevitible relief from that struggle at something the dreamer thinks is hopeless. She goes into this to avoid the questions from the friends -- the valid questions that might be the path to building something more solid and respectful in relationships.
As for wild ducks, I think of 'sitting duck' and more feelings of inevitablility of being in a bad relationship.
Unicorn mug turning to ash? "I am a 'mug' for wishing that things can change." More feelings of dashed hopes. A healthy relationship is as realistic to the dreamer as finding a unicorn.

Knowledge of our feeling body also keeps us from possible harm. When my children were young, I asked them to pay attention to what their bodies were telling them. If they felt fear, it would show up in the body first. I asked them to believe what the body was saying. The mind will often rationalize the fear away. The body is wise.

Your children were very fortunate to have had such a wise mother.

It's also true the the mind makes you anxious and fearful. We often project our insecurity on to situations or people without realizing it. The body is the alert system, the mind is there to analyze and discern. "Feelings" inform the mind what is going on, but that can also be reversed, which is what anxiety and/or unconscious beliefs do - they send the signal to your body that something is wrong when there is nothing actually wrong at all. We have to learn to use both in harmony with each other.

I forgot to add that the mind rarely rationalizes fear away, but rather highlights "bad" things. Our negative bias, our desire for safety and certainty, and our tendency toward the path of least resistance all factor in to this. That's why I say one must learn to use both the body and mind.

Last night I experienced sleep paralysis for what felt like a short moment, in a terrifying state of limbo. In this state I was dreaming, but felt like I was completely conscious and awake, and couldn't move. In one hand I was on the phone with my therapist, talking about some of the things we discussed earlier that day, and in the other ear I heard a voice saying "Love God with your heart" and that was it.

Waww Joseph, you really stood out for me in this episode, the way you really GET the connection between attachment and embodiment. Jung may actually have underacknowledged this essential instinct: our tendency to ATTACH. I also loved the way you translated "experiencing one's feelings" into "claiming territory of your body", because it really FEELS that way!! :-) Is "attachment" your particular domain of expertise? If so, would you consider an episode on that theme specifically?

    Hey all!
Thank you for all you shared, it was very helpful with understanding and sensing the importance of the body.
I also would like to mention the works of the *Marion Woodman* about the connection of the soma and psyche.
    Best regards.

Amazing insights into the importance of the body!!! My personal favourite philosophers including Aristotle,Nietzsche etc have also emphasised in their works that the body and spirit cannot be separated and must be given equal importance ...Thank you for developing these ideas in such a lucid and powerful way.....

@@thisjungianlife I hope so, Joseph, and then you can do an audio book version. You have a sensational voice that brings through your meaning and attitude so well. Maybe write a book based on things you've already discussed in the podcasts. Grab those transcripts and recycle/rework them.

Perhaps because of my own complexes I was disappointed that the discussion did not address more emphatically the genital areas of the body. They are very powerfully present in peoples lives, hence the enormous taboos and confusion and powerful language associated with them, which even seemed to inhibit the team. Somebody even referred to the "four-letter words"
