  • I've talked about it before, but the white cane can carry certain negative perceptions. However, after having the opportunity to use it a little more lately, I wonder if the benefits far outweigh any negative ideals. What are your thoughts? Enjoy!

I personally don't use my white cane ever. I use a black one with a pink handle and pink pencil tip. I have optic neuritis causing fluctuating vision with nistagmus that varies. So I'm not ready for a white cane yet but love the color options for those of us with enough vision that stairs, curbs and dark spots (cracks and holes) do require extra safety measures. Your videos have helped me through my constantly changing vision. Thank you for taking the time to share with others.

I received my white cane & had poor O&M training in 2015, but didn't start using it until about a year ago. Yes it is difficult only being able to use one hand and having to take my sunglasses off when going into areas in the shade. But the benefits do outweigh the negatives. Most people (not all) tend to make room for you on the sidewalk or wherever you're walking because they see the cane and know that I have a visual impairment. I don't trip on curbs that much anymore and getting up & down stairs is a lot easier than it was before I started using my cane.

I think some of the benefits of using a cane are that people get out of the way and don’t think you’re rude if you bump into them. But when I use mine a lot of people still don’t get out of my way and still get mad if I bump into them, so it’s kind of a catch 22

That was such an helpful video :) l’m actually going to start mobility training this summer to use the white cane! It’s mainly to tell sighted people to fuck off my way tbh

HiDerek from New Zealand. I’ve been using my white cane for the past 5 years and I consider it apart of my every day tools that keep mr independent. I find it useful to start conversations and it leads to leaving the other person amazed about the technology available to VIPs and we part company leaving them with more respect and understanding of vision impairment

I don’t think it’s fair for Ira do require you to use your mobility aid in order to get the subscription you have to fill out information proving that you are blind or visually impaired.
