Am I the asshole for being as mean as possible to the guy I was breaking up with? He was wonderful for 2-3 months, then all of a sudden on his 40th bday, he got extremely toxic and was screaming at me, threatening me, etc for a full week. And because he's literally never once respected my need for space, and he still harasses his last 2 exes with weekly vitriolic messages, I was mean cause I didn't wanna be on the receiving end of that. So I decided to go scorched earth and burn every last shred of love out of his heart to make him hate me so much he doesn't want me back. Because that's the only way he would voluntarily leave me alone.
I'm 28, he's 40 and he's single and has no friends because according to him "they're all narcissistic abusers and toxic people who abandoned me". But turns out he doesn't get abandoned, he actively drives people away with his toxicity and yet he thinks hes the victim of everyone else.
I was desperate to escape him.
I felt bad before, during, and after my mean streak. Especially because it ended up not even working and to make him leave me alone I had to go to the police and file a report against him.
I don't think you're the asshole. I think you did your best with what you had and what you knew at that point in time. Which is hard when you're in a toxic relationship, so I commend you for that. And there is no guidebook on how to get away from such a person. One thing I know is that you shouldn't feel guilty for his mistakes and his flawed character, it's not on you and you had nothing to do with that.
Now when it comes to your part in the relationship and what you could have done.. Maybe looking back you'll think you could have done better. And maybe you could have and next time you will do better, there's no doubt.
Because this is in itself.. looking back and questioning your decisions is a sign of growth. Sometimes I think we're supposed to stumble, so we can truly learn. Assholes don't usually learn much, so there's no way you can be an asshole.
Also, you deserve better. This was just a necessary step towards that better relationship. You're good
@@angelicdexter Thanks for saying that. It was such a wild situation. I've never had a psycho ex before and the magnitude of the switch from wonderful to terrifying is what really scared me.
One of the first things he ever told me was that he's an empath and I responded with "yikes, everyone I've known who proclaims themselves to be an empath instead of just being empathic and letting other people say that about them... all those people have been some of the most destructive or self destructive people I've ever met." And I really shoulda trusted my first instinct cause I was right.

Some of us had relationships where we weren't married, you know before it was legal, and lost everything bc governments in states are nasty, especially in the south. We aren't more important than non-married mo's, but we did it to protect our lives, limbs, and property from stupid republicans who have made drag illegal and are coming for our relationships next, especially in TX. So before you judge the institution of marriage, why don't you think about it logically as a way to protect ourselves and piss the straight people off bc we usurped something they thought belonged only to themselves.
