This way of doing the list reveal is way way better than the usual, but besides that the list was super mid, its hard to get excited for a list dropping right after the meta is shifted completely by two new decks and the old meta is already on its way out
I think the misconception is that the old meta was on its way out. It wasn't. Ryzeal and maliss are both functioning at lower power than they are in ocg due to maliss not having access to Apollousa and Ryzeal not having access to seventh tachyon. Even if that wasn't the case, both SE and Yubel before the banlist were still at far FAR higher power levels in tcg than they were and are in ocg. Snake eye got pretty gutted but yubel got a significant boost in power with spirit gates back to 3 and phantom to 1 was a slap on the wrist. Also both of these decks not having access to scythe lock when scythe is almost completely dominating and being included in every deck list in ocg is another massive difference to tcg.
One Piece has been doing this for all of its banlists. Unfortunately, the game has a shared format so it gets announced at Japanese events that no one here is really watching live.

I mean, if I had to guess, joseph is more upset that they felt that now was the time to take snake-eye out back behind the shed, and it kinda just wasn't. That was last banlist season, and tbh even then there are intelligent ways to hit decks without just banning the best card like a monkey which is what we thought was happening to snake-eye after seeing the last banlist. It was really shaping up to be the next dragon rulers or tearlament in terms of surviving banlists but I guess konami hates that deck as much as we did
TO BE FAIR, this is going to help rogue a lot i figure. Now the rogue archetypes only have to worry about building their decks to address Maliss and Ryzeal (and maybe Yubel still). This could keep the format from being a complete shit show like it was during Fiendsmith Snake-Eye (where decks like Tenpai were a thorn in everyone's side when it came to trying to optimize deck building). It also means that those picking up the Blue-Eyes structure decks don't have to juggle 5 different meta decks, which will help with bringing new and returning players back into the game.
What other kind of banlist are you looking for? The unban old degenerate cards no one wants to play against list? Ban cards no one plays list? Ban future cards that don’t exist yet list? Of course they are checking currently played powerful cards. I genuinely don’t understand comments like this.

I really like that they released the banlist like this, super fun and felt a lot more personal. HOWEVER, I feel like with the cards that are on the banlist they may receive overall a negative response which scares me that it could prevent them from wanting to do something like this in the future. I like how they did it but it feels weird to say they should've waited until they had a better list, or at least one with more shock factor (ban shifter unlimit electrum, stuff like that)
hearing the crowd go nuts cheering for the tenpai hits was cool as hell but the idea of the list being met with the crowd erupting in loud boos /is/ kinda scary, yeah.

Any post I’ve seen online where people complain about the list make the effort to state that the way they released it was cool as hell, so hopefully Konami themselves know that. Plus the crowd was going crazy even for the mid Banlist changes
So from this point on, why would anyone buy anything from the Rarity Collections with any sort of confidence? All 3 of them have had some really nice reprints to make things affordable only to see those reprints either banned or essentially rotated within a few months time? Sure, stuff like Baronne, Savage, and Apo had to go but Snake Eyes seemed like it was going to be phased out by Ryzeal and Maliss. See you in 9 months when they reprint Fiendsmith in RA05 and gut the engine a week later by banning Engraver.
If Snake-Eye never got meaningfully hit despite being hard meta for almost a year that wouldn’t have looked good. Don’t worry, OSS will get unbanned again in like 2 or 3 years after it’s been actually powercrept and turned into a rogue strategy.
It's actually hilarious that they turned "we're gonna pretend to slightly balance the game, and laugh at the players who want it" into a type of reveal players want more of.
The Jowgen hit was definitely needed at this point. Not just because of Sanctifire, but also because it would have become an enormous problem once A Bao A Qu, the Lightless Shadow enters the TCG in January.
Personally happy for the Barrage unban, Zoodiac was the first high power deck I invested in all those years ago and I'd love to see it get some legacy support Though I do think Ryzeal and Maliss deserved some indirect hits like Bonfire or Shifter.

Their determination to keep flamberge in the game instead of banning it has now resulted in every other fire deck losing a big piece of consistency. The dragon is already dead in the lore so keeping it around makes no sense at this point but here we are.

Tract only sees multiple copies in dedicated fiendsmith decks and its basically cynet mining /bonfire with specifically lurrie. Fusion Lacrima is the most and least impactful hit to the strategy. Hurts the generic engines the most and hurts dedicated decks the least.
TBH the only real reason I can think of is that maliss is the new shifter deck of the format, but on a more serious note this card should have been should have been long gone.

The ban to OSS just feels like kicking us while we're down. I know people were CLAMORING for Flamberge to be banned, but the deck in it's now previous iteration was totally fine to play against. Meanwhile, fiendsmith won Trif the whole ycs and is in almost every deck with zero hits? It's wild.

Fiendsmith's gonna be everywhere, ryzeal is gonna be easily the best deck and the rogue decks that used the diabellstar engine now suffer a major loss. Except for tenpai and yubel this list doesn't feel like a win to be honest
Not really, unless your deck used snake eyes or level 1 fire monsters as part of its engine. Diabell and wanted are still both unlimited. I guess my white forest deck can no longer play without OSS even though I wasn't using it to begin with. I'm so hurt.
@@jtalkalot19 Fire King and ironically enough Rescue-Ace are now dead without the Snake-eye line. I suppose Azamina is an option but you only get one negate and end at that. The only exception is white forest but I don't think much has changed to improve its place in the meta.
The fact that they brought back barrage but drident is still banned is crazy. Put both to 3 like master duel did, it's not like zoo would be a problem. Especially not with Norden, Broadbull and Rat still on the list.
As a player that quit in April to play One Piece, I wanna say I feel so bad for Yugioh players. Attendance for the last 2 California YCS' (The state with the highest attendances on average) hasn't passed 1500 players. The best decks are more expensive now than in a really long time. Don't get me started on prizing (even though I don't think you should ever do a hobby for monetary value you should do your hobby because you enjoy it)
If it had been flamberge rather than OSS I feel this list would be more celebrated. Killing diabell as a splashable engine to help fire decks feels so damn lame

A lot of people here in the comments are raving about how much they like this style of banlist reveal, however doesn't putting out a banlist on the same night as first tournament after the major set release mean it's impossible for Konami to adjust the list based on the results results of that tournament? Like, in theory we would like Konami to use this most recent tournament as a way to gauge the performance of the meta decks, and judge the impact of the new set. I'm not sure how much they do this in practice, but releasing the banlist *immediately* following the tournament like this means they *must* have wrote the list before the tournament even played out. Doesn't that seem strange?
I feel like itd be more rational to address the tenpai hits lol. Snake eye got WAY longer to fuck around, and were actively a CITED reason why people were quitting the game. Tenpai was affordable and brought quite a few back to locals. I havent researched, but considering the rarities i have a hard time feeling like ryzeal will fit that niche. This isnt to say tenpai is healthy or balanced, but can we say that what they were doing WONT just exist in the meta anyways?
they won't because the TCG as a whole loathes pendulums, even though they are dog water, even with Electrumite unfortunately. I too would like to see it, but the rate of Pendulums has plummeted since Link format
@@otterfire4712 The basic problem with pendulums has always been that whatever they do, they do it every turn. In the early days there were pendulum decks that didn't have much utility but actually did something, and they failed because setting the scales was too expensive so they didn't do much turn one and got run over. After that there have been a lot of pendulum decks that had the utility to do everything they could turn one, but they didn't actually do much of anything so letting them do it every turn was fine. But when there have been pendulum decks that actually have both utility and power, they've been tier 0 threats that needed to be banned out right away. Konami couldn't find a way to fix that, so they've opted to just never let pendulum decks be powerful.
@@driftwisp2797 problem with the idea that they can do something every turn is that games generally don't last that long. To boot, much of pendulum's design has devolved into a pile soup akin to DLink, taking advantage of all of the generic support thrown in here and there. D/D/D is probably the exception to this, thanks in part to self imposed type restrictions, isolating it from the rest of pendulum. There's also the issue of how easy it is to punish a pendulum player. Popping even a single scale is devastating in card value since the card doesn't go to grave, where most recovery focuses on. Personally, I'd like to see Pendulum's return to being a supporting mechanic to archetypes rather than a leading part. Plunder Patrollship Jord does an excellent job of this albeit there isn't another Plunder Pendulum to utilize, aside from that it's there to provide some recursive utility and cycles itself back into the ED face down. Something I think could be observed is utilizing Pendulums more as their spell counterpart that has a different purpose than just summoning itself. Symphonic Warriors do fairly well with this seeing as most of their pendulums lack summoning from the pendulum zone, save for DJJ which his is on the condition of another Symphonic Warrior using their own effect rather than something like Vaylantz. Symphonic Warrior Guitariss helps compensate for this potential problem by having two ways of bouncing Symphonic Warriors back.
This is objectively the funniest way to announce a Banlist, they should do this more. As a friend of mine put it: nothing hits like a guy in the crowd going "NOOOOO!" at his favorite card getting hit
Fiendsmith was what actually dominated this YCS and looked great every time it was on camera and Ryzeal looked just okay if it didn't brick. Trif didn't win the YCS with Ryzeal. If you watched... he definitely won thanks to Fiendsmith and it wasn't even close.
Konami should take top cut matches from events and perform them with VR technology. Giving players avatars and making the monster move like in the anime.
OSS was a great hit because it forces players to Find diferentes strategies with a small hit. White forest (and Lore) can use wanted and witches at 3. I think thats cool
It didnt have any representation in top 16, only 1 in top 32. There was 0 reason to ban OSS, or even hit snake eye at all. Also why on earth was branded on the chopping block? Its not like they banned sanctifire so they can still do unfair things with ido and the deck has not gotten a single top in ages

Because banning the actual floodgate cards like gimmick puppet nightmare and jowgen is always the better hit than saunctifire dragon. There are still ways to get gimmick puppet nightmare to your opponent without saunctifire dragon, just not as simple and more combo pieces. Just better to outright ban the actual floodgate card for future proofing. It's the same with Calamity Archfiend Dragon. Just ban it and Crimson Dragon is fine for every synchro deck to use. It's always just better to hit the actual problem than to hurt the enabler which could be used in other decks and is technically fair. Also, good luck making use of Ido with saunctifire dragon. Not an actual floodgate when you can tribute summon, have it die in battle, or droplet it away unlike gimmick puppet nightmare that has no counter play at all.

Killing OSS is like, 'Let's get rid of Snake Eye while doing the most collateral damage possible'. A bunch of decks are going to lose steam now because playing Diabellestar as a consistency engine is no longer an option. That's a real kick in the pants.
Just cause your bad deck can use a free 7 card engine that makes it way too consistent, doesn't mean that engine isn't a problem. It was the single reason snake-eyes was as good as it was. It gave the deck unreasonable levels of consistence to the extent that it forced everyone to stuff every inch of their decks with hand traps just to be able to stop. The health of the format should not be decided by the whims of how playable a rogue deck is due to generic support, or otherwise broken cards.
@@mileserwini disagree if only because having a way to get an archetypal fire 1 was fine, but I agree that even then OSS felt very much abusable by decks which had no reason to be using it only to get to snake-eyes lines. Which was the real issue behind the card, and even then mostly because Flamberge would be both removal AND a non-restrictive link climbing tool. Want to see it come back when Flamberge has been gutted, or hopefully have a similar card with SOME restriction attached to it. Just saying "send a face-up card, special summon from deck" feels wrong somehow, even worse when you're supposed to be using it AFTER Diabellstar has hit the field, so there's no need to care about locking you out of her (if that's what they were worried about).

I was liking this banlist right up until OSS. I agree it really feels like they just gave a finger to anyone who picked up the cards for cheap. The game is freaking expensive and an affordable and okay strategy is now dead. I don't know what I'm going to do with Rescue Ace now....I refuse to buy the new cards because they just do NOT look fun & I hate mirror matches.
On the one hand, sad to see OSS go as it was a super interesting card to experiment with. On the other hand it might open up the design team to do new stuff with the azamina engine without the fear of it having access to a bunch of link material.

I really like that they released the banlist like this, super fun and felt a lot more personal. HOWEVER, I feel like with the cards that are on the banlist they may receive overall a negative response which scares me that it could prevent them from wanting to do something like this in the future. I like how they did it but it feels weird to say they should've waited until they had a better list, or at least one with more shock factor (ban shifter unlimit electrum, stuff like that)

So from this point on, why would anyone buy anything from the Rarity Collections with any sort of confidence? All 3 of them have had some really nice reprints to make things affordable only to see those reprints either banned or essentially rotated within a few months time? Sure, stuff like Baronne, Savage, and Apo had to go but Snake Eyes seemed like it was going to be phased out by Ryzeal and Maliss.
See you in 9 months when they reprint Fiendsmith in RA05 and gut the engine a week later by banning Engraver.
If Snake-Eye never got meaningfully hit despite being hard meta for almost a year that wouldn’t have looked good. Don’t worry, OSS will get unbanned again in like 2 or 3 years after it’s been actually powercrept and turned into a rogue strategy.

Tract only sees multiple copies in dedicated fiendsmith decks and its basically cynet mining /bonfire with specifically lurrie. Fusion Lacrima is the most and least impactful hit to the strategy. Hurts the generic engines the most and hurts dedicated decks the least.

As a player that quit in April to play One Piece, I wanna say I feel so bad for Yugioh players. Attendance for the last 2 California YCS' (The state with the highest attendances on average) hasn't passed 1500 players. The best decks are more expensive now than in a really long time. Don't get me started on prizing (even though I don't think you should ever do a hobby for monetary value you should do your hobby because you enjoy it)
If it had been flamberge rather than OSS I feel this list would be more celebrated. Killing diabell as a splashable engine to help fire decks feels so damn lame

A lot of people here in the comments are raving about how much they like this style of banlist reveal, however doesn't putting out a banlist on the same night as first tournament after the major set release mean it's impossible for Konami to adjust the list based on the results results of that tournament?
Like, in theory we would like Konami to use this most recent tournament as a way to gauge the performance of the meta decks, and judge the impact of the new set. I'm not sure how much they do this in practice, but releasing the banlist *immediately* following the tournament like this means they *must* have wrote the list before the tournament even played out. Doesn't that seem strange?
They're already know for posting banlists in the middle of big events, at least this way people aren't getting distracted before the event finishes.

I feel like itd be more rational to address the tenpai hits lol. Snake eye got WAY longer to fuck around, and were actively a CITED reason why people were quitting the game. Tenpai was affordable and brought quite a few back to locals. I havent researched, but considering the rarities i have a hard time feeling like ryzeal will fit that niche. This isnt to say tenpai is healthy or balanced, but can we say that what they were doing WONT just exist in the meta anyways?

@@otterfire4712 The basic problem with pendulums has always been that whatever they do, they do it every turn. In the early days there were pendulum decks that didn't have much utility but actually did something, and they failed because setting the scales was too expensive so they didn't do much turn one and got run over. After that there have been a lot of pendulum decks that had the utility to do everything they could turn one, but they didn't actually do much of anything so letting them do it every turn was fine. But when there have been pendulum decks that actually have both utility and power, they've been tier 0 threats that needed to be banned out right away. Konami couldn't find a way to fix that, so they've opted to just never let pendulum decks be powerful.
@@driftwisp2797 problem with the idea that they can do something every turn is that games generally don't last that long. To boot, much of pendulum's design has devolved into a pile soup akin to DLink, taking advantage of all of the generic support thrown in here and there. D/D/D is probably the exception to this, thanks in part to self imposed type restrictions, isolating it from the rest of pendulum.
There's also the issue of how easy it is to punish a pendulum player. Popping even a single scale is devastating in card value since the card doesn't go to grave, where most recovery focuses on.
Personally, I'd like to see Pendulum's return to being a supporting mechanic to archetypes rather than a leading part. Plunder Patrollship Jord does an excellent job of this albeit there isn't another Plunder Pendulum to utilize, aside from that it's there to provide some recursive utility and cycles itself back into the ED face down. Something I think could be observed is utilizing Pendulums more as their spell counterpart that has a different purpose than just summoning itself. Symphonic Warriors do fairly well with this seeing as most of their pendulums lack summoning from the pendulum zone, save for DJJ which his is on the condition of another Symphonic Warrior using their own effect rather than something like Vaylantz. Symphonic Warrior Guitariss helps compensate for this potential problem by having two ways of bouncing Symphonic Warriors back.

Fiendsmith was what actually dominated this YCS and looked great every time it was on camera and Ryzeal looked just okay if it didn't brick. Trif didn't win the YCS with Ryzeal. If you watched... he definitely won thanks to Fiendsmith and it wasn't even close.
Konami should take top cut matches from events and perform them with VR technology. Giving players avatars and making the monster move like in the anime.
OSS was a great hit because it forces players to Find diferentes strategies with a small hit. White forest (and Lore) can use wanted and witches at 3. I think thats cool
It didnt have any representation in top 16, only 1 in top 32. There was 0 reason to ban OSS, or even hit snake eye at all. Also why on earth was branded on the chopping block? Its not like they banned sanctifire so they can still do unfair things with ido and the deck has not gotten a single top in ages

Because banning the actual floodgate cards like gimmick puppet nightmare and jowgen is always the better hit than saunctifire dragon. There are still ways to get gimmick puppet nightmare to your opponent without saunctifire dragon, just not as simple and more combo pieces. Just better to outright ban the actual floodgate card for future proofing.
It's the same with Calamity Archfiend Dragon. Just ban it and Crimson Dragon is fine for every synchro deck to use. It's always just better to hit the actual problem than to hurt the enabler which could be used in other decks and is technically fair. Also, good luck making use of Ido with saunctifire dragon. Not an actual floodgate when you can tribute summon, have it die in battle, or droplet it away unlike gimmick puppet nightmare that has no counter play at all.

Killing OSS is like, 'Let's get rid of Snake Eye while doing the most collateral damage possible'. A bunch of decks are going to lose steam now because playing Diabellestar as a consistency engine is no longer an option. That's a real kick in the pants.

Just cause your bad deck can use a free 7 card engine that makes it way too consistent, doesn't mean that engine isn't a problem. It was the single reason snake-eyes was as good as it was. It gave the deck unreasonable levels of consistence to the extent that it forced everyone to stuff every inch of their decks with hand traps just to be able to stop.
The health of the format should not be decided by the whims of how playable a rogue deck is due to generic support, or otherwise broken cards.
@@mileserwini disagree if only because having a way to get an archetypal fire 1 was fine, but I agree that even then OSS felt very much abusable by decks which had no reason to be using it only to get to snake-eyes lines. Which was the real issue behind the card, and even then mostly because Flamberge would be both removal AND a non-restrictive link climbing tool.
Want to see it come back when Flamberge has been gutted, or hopefully have a similar card with SOME restriction attached to it. Just saying "send a face-up card, special summon from deck" feels wrong somehow, even worse when you're supposed to be using it AFTER Diabellstar has hit the field, so there's no need to care about locking you out of her (if that's what they were worried about).

I was liking this banlist right up until OSS. I agree it really feels like they just gave a finger to anyone who picked up the cards for cheap. The game is freaking expensive and an affordable and okay strategy is now dead. I don't know what I'm going to do with Rescue Ace now....I refuse to buy the new cards because they just do NOT look fun & I hate mirror matches.
On the one hand, sad to see OSS go as it was a super interesting card to experiment with. On the other hand it might open up the design team to do new stuff with the azamina engine without the fear of it having access to a bunch of link material.

They want the playerbase to buy Crossover Breakers and upcoming core sets by getting rid of a crucial card that supported all of the fire decks this year. Just a calculated business decision by Konami.
