    If you've ever lived in Jasper you would know the west side of town is almost all residential. There are some houses east of downtown, but mostly hotels other than the cavell courts apartments. While it's good they saved major infrastructure, where do people live while they rebuild? Not just families who lost homes but hundreds of workers who staff businesses. Housing has always been at a premium in Jasper. If 60% or more of the residential buildings are lost thats going to cause a huge problem. It will be interesting to see how the rebuild happens, 3 layers of govt red tape to work through, Remember the residents don't own the land their houses were on, its a national park

    I too sad regarding Jasper and it's residence. However, for the future, it's imperative that it is mentioned the extensive use of wood roofing. Seems unwise to use such practices in this location. If such material is used, a water dispensing system needs to be installed on the roof. Also, fire break lines - perhaps at a distance from the community, should be maintained.

    Some serious questions for Parks Canada need to be asked about the losses in Jasper. The Provincial government and Parks Canada would never have allowed the Banff townsite to experience this kind of loss. Jasper was sacrificed because they don't have the financial investment and political influence to save them. Why? Where was our Provincial and Federal Environment Ministries? Don't preach to me about saving the environment with a carbon tax. Save our protected forest resources, our heritage and our neighbours. Shame on them for their negligent failures.

      Because the environmentalist political view on the jasper area saw that the pine Beatles were “natural and native to pine trees” that killed so many trees I was there doing some hiking and camping last summer and I was afraid to have a fire at my campsite because all the trees were dead and all the hiking area I went to was dead and the area that is burning has the highest standing dead around. The question is why did the government at the federal level not allow for the harvest of trees to be cleared out of the dead with a controlled cut line and burn or tree harvest and plant new trees why did we stop doing forest clean ups and leave everything natural in a high fire danger zone. And while digging the fire why did the government refuse the use of bull dozers to create a fire break they were told to save as much standing as possible.

    Why does the Alberta government not use oilfield service companies in these emergencies? We have many water transfer companies capable of laying miles of 10” water line through rugged terrain. Hundreds of high pressure frac pumps are located close by. Offroad cranes and crane trucks could be quickly rigged to be gigantic water cannons. Trained oilfield personal could have pumped the Athabasca river on this fire.

    Critical infrastructure? I'm pretty sure the people who lost their homes consider their homes to be critical infrastructure too. Not to mention the fact that if the Alberta government actually wants to do something they could try switching to different industries rather than fossil fuels and maybe contribute to the decarbonization of the planet? Just a thought

    • @jaysoncea9376
      @jaysoncea9376 2 місяці тому

      That maybe how some displaced residents view their homes, but officials were simply highlighting that critical infrastructure is technically water treatment, power and natural gas, hospitals, and schools because they serve the entire community, and that their loss could result in significant social, economic, health and enviro effects in the entire community. Officials meant no disrespect to residents, emphasized their sympathies and challenges ahead, and pledged financial assistance to displaced persons. Will fed Libs do the same?.
      The Carbon Tax is separate and intended to highlight the social & enviro cost of fossil fuels, and to incentivize the replacement of fossil fuels with green energy. AB and SK are clearly reluctant because they have material revenue and strategies tied directly to hydrocarbons.

      FACT FOCUS: Conspiracies misconstrue ‘15-minute city’ idea. Cities where people can live a short walk from work, school and other daily essentials rather than braving traffic-clogged highways or long commutes: utopian ideal or dystopian nightmare? In 2023, apparently, it depends on who you ask.
      Some conservative commentators and conspiracy theorists are increasingly convinced the concept of a “15-minute city” - an urban design principle recently embraced by cities ranging from Paris, France to Cleveland, Ohio - is the latest nefarious plot to curtail individual freedoms.
      "You won’t be able to use your own car on certain roads and highways without the government’s permission and consent,” claimed one Instagram user in a recent video that’s been liked more than 5,400 times. “You will be constantly monitored by surveillance cameras to ensure that you don’t leave your designated residential zone without first being authorized to do so.”
      But urban experts and city officials stress the idea has nothing to do with regulating people’s movements or taking away other freedoms. In some cases, they say, it’s being wrongly conflated with local plans to mitigate traffic-clogged roads.
      The 15-minute neighborhoods proposal, meanwhile, aims to ensure that “every resident has all the essentials (shops, healthcare, parks) within a 15-minute walk of their home,” the fact sheet says. The goal is to “support and add services, not restrict them.”
      Conspiracy theorists are tapping into COVID-19 pandemic-era vitriol against lockdowns when they falsely portray the concept as a “climate lockdown,” notes Carlo Ratti, director of the Senseable City Laboratory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
      The goal of the 15-minute city is to provide convenient and equitable access to necessities like healthcare, schools, grocery stores, jobs, and greenspace,” Zickefoose wrote in an email. “Our transportation system and neighborhood configurations currently provide this access to residents with cars, which leaves out almost a quarter of our residents.” AP News

    And where were the jasper council, province, feds, and parks Canada when they could have mitigated fire risk since the last fire threat. 2 years of nothing done to put in a fire break and remove pine beetle kill and fire destroyed trees. Great photo op for the next election. Trudeau and parks canada next to offer help?
