Since both the F-18 and Mig-29 have roughly the same capabilities then you are correct in saying that the outcome will be decided by the skill of the pilots.
Technology is a big factor, but if all else is even, pilot skill is third to whichever sees the other first. Thereby getting the drop on angle so radar can get a solution to lock up, then boom somebody dies. Or at least bails out.
For the F-18, it was absolutely unrealistic to intercept the MiG-29. The maximum speed of the Mig -29 is 2450 km / h. The maximum speed of the F-18 is 2000 km / h. The practical ceiling of the MiG-29 is 18,500 meters, for the F-18 - 15240 m.
Max speed is not the limiting factor it's the fuel, radar and weapons. Missiles travel faster than either aircraft. And max speed is using burners and can only be maintained for a short timeframe before your fuel will become an issue. The Super Hornets will fuel from another Hornet after takeoff so the chances are pretty good that they will have more gas to burn. And the superior radar in the Hornet will enable them to spot the Mig29 much earlier giving them a very important advantage.

If you fly standard maneuvers your opponent knows, you will be shot down. The US pilots were only bad losers. Just as a reminder, Erich Hartmann had 352 confirmed kills in WW2 because he did not abide by any rules.
Hartman would start his attack from 5,000 meters above the enemy. He stated that he believed 95% of his victims never knew he was there. He also would get extremely close before opening fire. This tactic resulted in him having to bail out thirteen times because his plane was damaged from debris. Although he was proficient in combat maneuvering, he was not a fan of the turn and burn fight. His tactics were hardly revolutionary. He was smart, savvy, and aggressive. His strategy was dive down from above, shoot the enemy down, climb up and do it all over again. Wonder how the two aircraft got so close as to dogfight when they both have missiles and radars that detect the enemy miles away.
Simply because they wanted to compare the dogfight capacities of these jets I suppose
did u not read they were training
Also, the two planes look very similar. Nor, if they are professionals, would either want to start an international incident. Highly frowned upon.
Great work thanks for sharing.
Is not the aircraft that makes the difference it's the pilot.
I would guess that the outcome of any dogfight would depend more on the capabilities of the pilot than the plane.
