Will things like Metahumans Project Lyria or GASP also start to cost money or is Quixel the only thing ??
And this is why I'm using Godot everything is free including the game engine
I bought it a year ago but it was unfinished so i gave up on it , did you ever finish it ?
Thanks for the shoutout! Quixel Megascan assets are definitely worth the price, but future Unreal users will have a lot harder time learning UE5/UEFN without the library. The original intention of Epic Games acquiring Quixel was to make the library free and environment design accessible to new developers.
How much will it cost?
This bad for now but ai development of modeling and more might even this out in the next 5 years. Until then this sucks
I think this is a good thing. Beginners will learn how to create original assets and stop creating generic looking games and films.
W post
Why does this kind of thing only happen when I finally start using the engine?
same i just started 2 weeks ago
luckily you can claim them and own it permanently! but new users who start next year (and dont claim them) will have to pay for it!
@@NDV3355 we'll see in October
Don't worry, the reality is not all assets are actually worth claiming.
@@SmartPoly - I started grabbing some of the currently available free content last night but quickly noticed that a lot of it was labeled as incompatible with the newer versions of UE. Is there other Megascan content that I'm overlooking (or isn't available yet) or do we have to drop back a couple of engine versions for this free content?
BTW, thank you for the content you've posted on your channel - it's been a great help getting up to speed on UE.
Quixel in its current state should be free (inside Unreal) and then they should add something like a Quixel pro with new upgrades, or specific advanced quixel packages. And also, if you want to use quixel outside Unreal, you buy it. I think this will be nice...
my thoughts exactly
I agree, that's exactly how things should go. Unreal Engine is their main product, the real game changer. It should always be and look like their own priority. Else is like giving your best player away to the opposite team you're just going to face off... right at the Super Bowl's Finals!
EXACTLY! How hard is that to do? No t hard. I think this was to appease the major film studios who don't want the smaller players to have access to top of the line assets, this making it more difficult for independent film makers.
Thats a great compromise !
this is a huge blow to UE potential costumers. The main reason why you pick UE as an indie was the pixel bridge itself ! and the free market assets! Wth Epic games?
true
epic is TRIPPING, their game changer was always their free assets and projects! this new FAB thing is completely unnecessary and all the stores are working properly already and epic is making money from them already.
I agree. I don't see why they just make the current megascans assets FREE or maybe only make most used assets FREE. Either way this is a loss for new users
its probably cause fab is a universal marketplace so they cant/dotn wanna work more to figure out if the user is using for unreal or other engine and then give free or buy
@@ulrich-tonmoy but if FAB is integrated into the engine, they should know that you are using the assets for UE
@@ulrich-tonmoy so why is fab gonna be integrated with Godot?
And hyperwallet is trash
“ The saddest thing about betrayal is that it never comes from your enemies.”
Gonna go download evey single asset before it becomes paid and then turn it all into a mega folder and release it to the public.
Please do. I'm mid project here. :(
The hero we need🖖
Are you sure that is legit ? Surely breaks their lisence.
Well prepared to get sued xD
People have no clue...
I'm feeling very down rn. I know companies are there to make profit but they should not have abandoned us (still learning users) like that.
you will still be able to claim them for free before the end of the year
Abandoned? Dude you get a whole engine for free to program whatever you like...
Entitled much?
Well, time to buy a gigantanormasorous chunky fat SSD!
you can acquire the assets in market place, you dont need to directly store it in hard drive space.
@@FateOfFools-o6h I know I know. I was just being sarcastic... 😆
Thanks for dropping a reply! 🥰
@@phantomabid np
@FateOfFo how?
Here's a damn good reason taken right from the FAB license:
b. Re-download of Content. You may have the opportunity to (download Content) ... However, we do not guarantee that you will be able to always re-download or re-access Content from the Epic Marketplace. Reasons for removal may include take-down due to intellectual property infringement or other legal violation, seller violation of terms, and obsolescence. We encourage you to backup Content you have purchased.
FAB literally tells you to backup your content
I use Unreal Engine in one of my high school classes specifically, because these assets are free over all other considerations.
This is going to destroy that class.
I wonder if this decision is also the consequence of big studios pressure. With unreal being free of use and with so many assets free there have been an explosion in indie games and a massive increase in their overall quality. To the point where they must be impacting the market share for the big ones. We have seen recently with the debacles of Ubisoft or Concord how much people don’t deal with trash games anymore.
fortnite money is going downhill?
if epic stopped giving out free games a month thats a compromise i would be willing to live with to keep megascans on unreal for free, indefinitely.
I am just finishing video game design school and can confirm quixel was my go to for 95% of all my projects. It made it so easy to learn and get into unreal and have fun with it. Honestly to mess around with engines this change may make me not use unreal anymore. Pretty sad tbh
A suggestion, if you can afford it get a large external hard drive, 4T range or better. Get as many assets as you want and download then transfer to the external drive. This is what I did with all the assets I've picked up over the years.
Thanks a lot for the script link, got them all in about 2 minutes
Make sure everyone you know needs to claim the assets!
EPIC should have never dropped Unreal Tournament support / development. Fortnite wasnt going to be a hit forever but UT already was!
They should have left a team working on it or made the assets free so someone could develop it
I personally never had an interest in using any of the free assets in my projects. For some reason i want to create everything authentically from scratch. However, i do like harvesting assets just to analyze them and see how they created the mesh/textures/materials. Basically a tool for learning. But this is unfortunate and hopefully it isnt a sign of worse things to come.
That's how I feel, no one should lean on pre made assets unless you just don't take to have anything original in your projects. I see them more as learning tools than something Id use in a project. I get bummed out when I see people using every premade asset out there.
Purchased Quixel in 2016! They then made it free! Now its going paid again! Dumb! They better have all my paid assets/plugins. I've spent thousands over the years! Hopefully they also make it easier to categorize your owned assets as the current marketplace blows!
Time to start downloading 😊
Why download?
Claim them, it's all you need to do...
Downloading all those assets to own them would be literally insane and I hope that's not really the case. I really hope claiming them will be enough. Besides... if they make the download relevant my prevision is their servers will die with people downloading those assets all at once like crazy since today to the end of the year. Even as Epic I wouldn't like to go through that.
Personally I haven't used those assets much yet because I'm more working on mechanics and gameplay... but those assets were going to be an absolute need for me. I honestly hope they move back at least from that decision. I'm also concerned about the cost of the assets in the new platform, I'm concerned prices will run out of control.
In all this I really hope this won't be a "new era" for Unreal Engine making the "old" or "mid" era become a long gone "golden era"!
I started learning unreal engine 5 in May this year because of SmartPoly's Zombie FPS tutorials. I am still learning and building this game. I hope this new change won't impact the progress of this game development and learning journey.
Honestly I thinks it's not a bad move for people that actually use it can get more updates and better assets. Quixel scans created this effect where anyone could make some "wow looks so real" screenshots but the novelty wears off super quick. Realistically speaking you most likely wouldn't use this in a profesional game, they are often way too overkill for almost any type of game plus anything of lower level of detail that you put on the scene is going to pop up immediately, specially characters looking amateurish and cheap. We've all sene those "sonic in unreal" etc projects that look completely disjointed and lack real art direction. People often thing that higher detail assets make for more realistic and therefore better games but they are worth nothing if there is not a talented artist behind the direction.
Or it's because Unity is failing and they see that. They know they can start taking advantage now. Hope it's not true but this is what happens when business doesn't have competition.
if that was the case, I would think it's TOO soon to start charging for services like this. It was only last year that the whole Unity runtime fee was introduced, and recently it was actually removed
Unity just made a huge announcement with alot more free stuff and never to change current versions with new changes. Also upped the required earnings for when to take paid to 200K. I like UE but Unity is on its way to a right track again.
@@SmartPoly it was only a couple of weeks later everyone was panicing about epics announcement of a need to cut costs. it's all down to governments desire of screwing every living sole on the planet that big businesses start to feel the pinch too
Great Vid, I think that all current free assets should stay free. Anything moving forward they can sell it at a price. But taking what was once always free and now taking that away will hurt them.
i understand they want to make money and it's hard to make these assets but at least they should let current free assets remain free instead of charging people for them in the future
I agree
Thank you very much for that script! It worked really well. ☺️
I can't believe someone is not going to download it all and upload it for people to download via a torrent of some sort.
Just started UE, this is quite a shame...
They should make a megascans plugin for unreal that draws the assets from fab and then fab detects that it's that plugin and the assets will be free as long as the plugin loads them into unreal directly.
Im grateful to know info now, this entire situation is wild😮💨Good luck to everyone
Thanks for the great video. You bring up some nice points 👏🏻
Everyday, blender keeps looking better and better. This is actually crazy
Most of this will be AI generated soon. You can already do a lot of AI generations for 3D assets - for free. This will just accelerate the market for free assets via third parties. So I don't think it's a big deal TBH. As such, I don't think it was a good move for Ureal, because it'll just push users to other venders.
What they should have done, is have a multi-tier model, where you get free assets up to a certain resolution, then anything 4k+ you need a pro plan or something like that.
Probably not a popular opinion, but: they did state that certain assets would be free, so I'm guessing a lot of Quixel stuff will be free after all except for the very high quality assets. Though given all reactions I wonder if they will go through with this plan at all.
They can divide the existing program into two as free and paid. The free version can be a simpler quixel mixer with fewer textures, models and the paid version can give full access to the library and also a more complex mixer. Quixel is not only used by game developers, but also by everyone who wants quality textures, models etc. from architecture to industrial design.
dude Mixer is effectively dead and hasnt been updated since 2022, and is STILL in beta at that point.
Now I know how unity felt when their engine screwed them over
it will be free for people who claim the assets before the end of this year. Really it's only screwing over new unreal engine users, who find they missed out on a bunch of free assets
@@SmartPoly I knew this would happen one day, so last year I downloaded a huge amount of the library's assets onto my hard drive, because we shouldn't think that free will be free forever.
also
I purchased the entire content of the Quixel MegaScan site in less than 10 minutes
All this with a simple script
Now I am doing the same thing on another Gmail account
The real greed is expecting the Quixel team to work for free
@@brenolad nobody is expecting them to work for free and nor do they, they're employed by Epic. The real point is that this will ultimately be a huge obstacle for new developers to the engine which is a totally fair concern.
@brenolad The real greed is the fact that people will stop using Quixel bridge completely LOL...funny.and no money will be made at all hahaha...
Good info, I have the same concerns about the assets that are abandoned and/or haven’t been updated in a while.
It is a normal Tech sector strategy: growth for any price, even buying out competition, once established a duopoly or even monopoly by using lock-in methods or costly shifts, hike the price.
I mean they were only free for like 2 years or something, always seemed inevitable to me that UE would start charging once they got a bunch of new users
If they don't migrate Unreal assets that people have already claimed, the masses need to look at walking away. At the worst what people have claimed should still be available? As for trying to cast their net out to claim more money from people making films etc. Well, maybe Blender and other software may be a better choice???
I hope fab is not going to be like cg trader with that reward system to download free stuff. I was not the biggest user of Quixel bridge "did not have a good pc for years" and its hard to find assets to match how good they look without paying. but I'm going to miss ue marketplace free monthly stuff. Its better then xmas when I was a kid.
And this is why I have been learning for the past 3 years to make assets myself.
Hey man thank you for the script!
What about unreal marketplace? A lot of tutorials use that as well. Will it still function as it does now, that some assets are free, some are paid and we get additional 5 free assets every month?
From what I've seen in UE5.5, Fab still has free assets from Quixel Bridge. Fab can be tested in Unreal Engine 5.5, which is used to edit Fortnite maps.
Thank you for this info! :D
make sure you claim them in October or before the end of the year!
I am currently working on your remastered course, will you be able to prep for a situation where assets used in the course may go away?
Fab being engine agnostic is kinda weird. Like there are tons of plugins specifically for UE on the marketplace, if those become available on Fab they certainly won't be engine agnostic
true, there will be some asset packs that are solely unreal engine
that script is fire thanks for informing me :D
A year ago, I started learning Unreal Engine, and if it weren't for Quixel Bridge and its free assets, I would never have overcome the initial difficulties. They were an invaluable source of inspiration and motivation for me to continue developing. I'm disappointed that these assets are now being closed off to new potential creators who could discover and develop their creativity just like I did.
Will be buying new storage(s) to get as much of that library asap. And then start making my own high quality assets.
it will be a lot to download
good for them. i dont use it anyway. - the library is too limited anyway.
For real the library is souless
Paid assets makes less shovelware which is beat for all.
There's a script to paste in the web browser console window who add all the assets from quixel, just do that and you own them.
I think what is happening is that more movie studios are now using UE and so UE is sacrificing the small fish to appease the big boys so that the content creation of the small fish is competitive with the major players. I wouldn't be surprised if there was some deal the studios offered UE to limit assets to the small fish.
Funny how no one mentions the other aspects of Quixel that Epic dropped the ball on. While Megascans was a massive success for the industry, Bridge and Mixer have been dead for almost 2 years now. Mixer (formally Quixel Suite) was the only direct competitor to Substance Painter and Designer. It had massive potential to be an industry-leading tool, but nothing.
Blows Chunks!
I ran the script and now have them all in my purchased items however when I go to an item it only shows download in 2k, 4k and 8k, no nanite option available. Anyone know why?
SP did you get a new mic or am I tripping you sound very different 😅
Wait, are you telling me that quixel megascans that are free atm won't be free anymore once FAB releases if I don't claim them now?
They will be free in FAB until the end of the year. You can wait till october when FAB comes out, to claim them
Of course this is happening. It's too good of a deal as is.
Thankyou for the new!
My guess is that all the legacy assets will remain free. They only have value for realistic games. Stylized assets are more valuable in my opinion and would be a more likely focus of an asset store.
Welp, time to get to downloading
Epic should give these assets to all account created in fab before 2025 or one click buy all, else it will be a nightmare to get all of these one by one
I hope that's the case. otherwise claiming each individual asset will be annoying. Maybe someone will automate it
Yes, they could make a "Megascans Bundle" that when "bought" for free just claimed all assets from Megascan.
The line must go up.
thank you for the info
I’m very upset : I’ll be stop using the engine and go Godot instead it seems
I also knew this would happen one day, so last year I downloaded a huge amount of the library's assets onto my hard drive, because we shouldn't think that free will be free forever.
I'd love to do this too, but unfortunately it won't help new users when they follow any of my tutorials (since they will have to pay for access)
True
Better to wait for the FAB release
yep, however new users will not be able to claim these assets next year!
@@SmartPoly why do we need to wait for FAB? if we claim it now in bridge pixel, it will be available for who claim it forever to keep, right ? !
@@xjuliussx it's because of the license
I hope I can continue to use my Metahumans for my film.
what about metahuman
I see trouble ahead 😮
Please note that the number of assets dropped by about 4000 assets. In the video you see >18000 assets but right now it is more like 14000 assets in quixel
It was said somewhere that even if devs don't do anything their assets will be ported to fab automatically.. This new fab thing with the licencing sucks though..
I don't get it exacly. We have to download all assets until 2025 or Can we add easly on Fab in 2025?
There are some free Megascans on UE Marketplace as well. They come from Quixel. Do you think those will remain on the Marketplace for free? Those are not exactly the same as those from Quixel bridge.
Hopefully they will remain free and be migrated over to FAB. I am going to make a video about these and a few other ways to get assets
Is using the script safe? I'm afraid of getting banned or downloading something malicious
Sad since i thought EPIC were genuinely generous with indie devs since they literally swim in cash but they changed their mind seeing that unity is not anymore in the way. You have to understand that many indie devs do their game part time over many years and they don't have the money to buy all these assets. Greed is unfortunately a human factor in every large corporation but the upcoming global systemic collapse will solved the greed issue...
This is why I stick with open source projects. "Free" is only free as long as your master allows it, otherwise.
I just downloaded Unreal, and after hearing about this and seeing this video, I'm apprehensive about even using it. It's not mentioned anywhere when going to download UE, and as someone that just wants to make cool scenery, I feel lied to.
Maybe they will leave lower quality for free and charge for higher resolution/Nanite?
I hope that the Epic Wallet is not enforced. Adding funds in fixed denominations is in my mind a scam...
so this why quixel on ue5 always trouble? when we can download and use the fab? i have project and cant download assets from quixel window in ue5, can u help me for explain it? thankyou for ur help
so are they still giving away free assets and plugins for each month?
Unity: fucks up
Epic Games: Locks quixel behind a paywall
Meanwhile,
Godot:
P.S I use unity and now I feel I made the right decision of not switching to unreal
If you cant't past the script into console just type: "allow pasting" without quotes and you are redy to go.
When you say that you can claim these items means that there will be an option of claiming like a button kind of thing right because when I go to bridge there is no button of claiming , I just download whatever asset I want to . Am I right ?
Did you watch any of the video or read the description?
Get the script and claim the assets....
(and no I'm not gonna help you with that, it's all in the link)
You're welcome...
I have to re-run the script every a thousand or so because it got stuck, maybe too many people doing the same?, but it's going.
I wonder if quixel is having problems
I don't like it what epic is doing now. mega-scan is essential to all unreal engine users.
If not broken, then why fix it?
NOOOOOOOOOOO
Wait will my current assets I have on the marketplace go over to FAB?
Yes, you'll "lose" nothing you already have claimed or bought.
@@ickebins6948 thank you
Does anyone know how to import models into blender after Quixel migrated to Fab, like before just hit export in megascans bridge but now it just shows download in Fab?
Marketplace is affected? How is this gonna fk up our library? You know it will.
Im hoping this wont affect the monthly freebies in there. Surely there will still be the monthly freebies section. Right? RIGHT?
They mentioned to current Unreal Marketplace sellers to start migrating their content over. So I am wondering if migration is a manual process. If so, will old asset packs be auto-migrated over? or removed...
@@SmartPoly On the announcement they said creators who don't migrate manually to the Fab license until a certain date will be migrate to Fab using the current unreal license.
Marketplace will cease to exist, all assets bought (free or paid) from the marketplace will still be available on the Engine Vault.
@@MarcusBuer Well that sux. What a dumbass name. Fab. I went over there and checked it out. It took my epic login credenials. There is a QnA that says there will be free stuff. I assume its gonna be up to the sellers. Man I wish they would just leave well enough alone.
@@SmartPoly Not a very detailed QnA on there at all. My guess is you dont, which means, you prolly do. LOL.
Did they take a play from the unity playbook?
Yeah...BAD CHOICE...they will regret this.
It's still free for Unreal Accounts. It stated so in the email it sent to me.
till the end of the year
there should be a pro/ free version of Quixel....
how about quixel mixer?.
I add entire library at each gmail 18990 asset at once
How ?
