  • There's a lot of talk in the chronic pain world about neural pathways and neuroplastic (learned) pain. That often leads people to wonder how to disconnect the pain pathways. Here's my take on the best way to do this.

    Dan, I don’t think I was quite ready to take in this information when you made this video a year ago. But I just re-watched it and man it makes so much sense now. This is the whole ball game right here. I need to watch this every day! Thanks for sharing your wisdom and your insights.

    Great illustration! That brought back good memories of "Shortie Conforti" only allowing us to speak Spanish in class! Mindset is my new mantra. We have a choice every day of what we think about, worry about and allow into our day. It takes practice, like anything else truly worthwhile.

    Loved the analogy to language acquisition....Spanish.
    It makes more sense now.
    When we don't use our brain for a specific function, the thing fades away.
    We are used to learn, acquire, repeat, wire.....
    and with pain we need to do exactly the opposite - to unlearn it.

    You threw me a curve there Dan! I thought you were going to say that you get rid of the pathways by replacing them...but your example of "learning a foreign language" made total sense! After learning Spanish to a level of fluency, I studied Italian to near fluency, and guess what? I did NOT lose my Spanish skills. HOWEVER, I've STOPPED using and practicing Italian and it is all but gone! So...my task is to stop "practicing" my focus on the TMS symptoms. If you have any additional thoughts on this, I'm all "orejas" (ears :) Thanks!

      Well, creating new pathways focused on what we want and not giving any attention to the old pathways that we don't want is essentially how we "replace them". As for language, once we get to the level of fluency - it sticks a lot more than something we only learn mid way.

    Give more attention and focus to the new thing - make it positive and incredible. I really think the key is to just continually and nonstop put your energy towards the pleasant. If or when the pain and anxiety comes back up, just learn to be ok with it. Fighting what is won’t do any good. I’ve learned to literally be ok and carry on even though I feel anxious. It’s not easy, but better than running.

    It's amazing how everything you describe just completely resonates every single day. Every time I watch your videos I can instantly feel my nervous system relax and my symptoms completely vanish. Today was particularly helpful to have the phenomenon of "oh the symptoms are gone! Oh, here they come again..." acknowledged because that's been what's keeping me from going from 90% to 100% consistently these last few months.
    Thank you for doing what you do. It makes such a huge difference.

    Greetings Brother Dan. What about somatic tracking? Do you advise against focusing on the pain, examining it, and being curious about it -- like we're taught to do by some of the PRT experts?

    THIS IS PURE MIRACULOUS MAGIC:
    - Right hand on forehand, left hand on back of head
    - Close eyes and relax

    - Concentrate on new belief system and repeat it to yourself

    - Change the way you say that belief (Meaningful, Heartfelt)
    - Create images in your mind which are in alignment with the new belief
    - If positive emotions comes up, identify them and feel where they are in your body
    - "I now know this to be true. And I know it to The depths of my being"
    - Move eyes from left to right 22 times
    (Try it out! Works really well.
    I like the part where you just effortlessly see the images in your mind...)

    It really makes sense and I believe this can work with time and practice and I like your videos. However I was just dropping off to sleep cos your voice is very soothing when I heard some words on the lines of "pain go on forever, trapped in this body etc etc" quickly followed by the words "process process process" you need to be careful of minor details like this negative talk and where repetition is used when training peoples brains. You would make a good hypnotist and this could defo accidently imbed in subconcious so defo need to be careful hahaha. On the whole tho... excellent videos, nobody with as great, simply explained info.

    I wonder if my nerve pain symptoms have become psychologically wired in/triggered.
    My C6-C7 herniated over a year ago & my body is still reacting as if it's in trauma mode. Neck/back muscle spasms, chronic nerve pain etc.
    Stress is a massive trigger for it.

      Nerve pain is not evidence of body damage. Are you familiar with TMS/Perceived Danger Pain? Ever read Dr. Sarno's work? A good place to begin with my work is:

      It is quite possible the herniations are an innocent normal abnormality and not the cause of the pain. The pain test will help you understand if your brain is creating the pain and not your herniation.

    It’d be interesting to know why some people’s bodies and brains (mine, for 40 years now) translate fear and negative emotions into physical pain and some people’s bodies and brains don’t. There has to be a reason.

    Any suggestions for sevee CFS, brain inflammation!? Was in bed all day.. I think it’s mold related. I keep looping in fear, how I’m going to take care of myself, survive etc. Btw. I was a Spanish major and loved it. Thank you

      I'm no doctor, but brain inflammation? Was that medically diagnosed and is it being medically treated? CFS is very often TMS. Are you aware of TMS? You can learn more at PainFreeYou.com and watch the video.

    This was soooo good! I can see that I think about my symptoms 24/7, this is something i am trying very hard to stop doing. Waking up in the middle of the night with a pounding heart and shaking hands freaks me out and my brain goes berserk. Then I get myself so worked up, I literally can't sleep the rest of the night.

      My recommendation is to go immediately to soothing. Breathing. Calming down your thinking. Reassuring yourself that you are okay and safe.

    I recently confirmed my pain, sometimes severe in hip groin area is definitely TMS. Dr Shubiner recent reiterated that the TMS pain can mysteriously move around which mine definitely does each day! 3.5 years of mri ct X-ray many doctors and last one a spine surgeon told me it’s something rare because he saw no reason for pain or referred pain I’m any of my MRIs.
    I ran a highly stressful business. It was stressful to me although I loved the work, I was a people pleaser. Worried how others viewed me.
    My issue is being physically able to try to block out this TMS and do hobbies. It’s very painful to do them and distracting.
    Maybe I just need to force myself?? Not quite sure, but thank you Dan for these videos.

      I understand this completely. I also have hip and groin pain along with low back, neck and all over flu like symptoms (what has been diagnosed as Fibromyalgia and arthritis) I have had chronic pain for almost 35 years (since I was 20 and had mono after very stressful teenage years of my parents divorce, abusive step dad, father had severe stroke..all in 6 years time) and it is now so severe most days I cannot concentrate to “live” ..I mean like trying to enjoy life with a severe case of the flu and being hit by a car the day before you got the flu. I’m pretty convinced the pain is mostly neuroplastic but I can’t figure out how that really helps. I’m going to watch the other video this man recommended. Anyway, I do understand what you are saying. It’s like how do you ignore pain and sickness that’s a 9 1/2 on a 1 to 10 scale? It’s tough but I’m determined to figure it out.

      @@NEChristo I’m now on SSDI! Can’t believe I actually got approved for it. Social security doesn’t have anything on tms in there books.

    I love your answers so much. You make so much sense in such a simple way. I have read so many books on mind-body healing, neuroplasticity. But I find your answers to be the most straightforward and practical. And guess what? My pain is gone. It comes back when I am stressed but otherwise it's totally gone.     i'm listening to the 5 minute rule and she says that eventually it will totally rewire your brain, which sounds real nice :) today i woke up with sore throat feeling like i'm getting a cold, then a couple of minutes later i felt like crying! so i just let my self whimper and tapped on it while i was doing it, and my throat is feeling better :)

    I thought Dr sarno says to see the those hidden emotions, means focus on those bad emotions, but u say don't focus on those , which also makes so much sense, maybe we just need to watch those emotions and then later on just let it go and there is no need of further focusing,

      I suggest we feel our current emotions so they can be released automatically. There is lots of research that resisting our emotions can cause more problems. Feel them so they can pass through.

    Just shows up in different part of the body, that is where we perceive pain to be! So when it shows up does it even cause inflammation, does tms cause inflammation, my right feet slightly swells planter faciatis , small nerve neuropathy

      The brain is very powerful. If the brain believes an injury occurred in the foot, it may create inflammation. Do you have plantar faciitis and neuropathy? Or TMS? It's one or the other. Take the pain test to find out: DanBuglio.com/paintest

      I’m also thinking the same as with my eye lid has decided to droop with swelling there every day and was wondering if it’s stress response or inflammatory response I admit I’m stressed all the time with something going on

    How about practicing watching the pain without trying to manipulate it or respond to it?

      That is fine - that is something Alan Gordon teaches called Somatic tracking. It is very similar to my "mindset of indifference". I'm not a big proponent of watching it for any length of time. I believe we will absolutely notice it, but the way we respond to it with a lack of fear, being indifferent and shifting our attention away is what I have experienced as helpful. But Alan also has great results with his approach. Experiment with both.

      @@PainFreeYouI have found, Initially somatic tracking is a great tool to teach the brain to not fear the symptoms , allow emotional flow and allow to subside, then the application of indifference to move on , in that order. Attempting such a strong tool like Indifference , whilst fear and symptoms are highly active can aggravate symptoms into a rage as you literary fight to turn your attention away .I think this is why so many struggle with indifference , its a timing error. I like Dan's order of feel ,sooth then shift.

      @@PainFreeYou hi thanks for your reply.. Im new to your channel..long story short.. Right intense back spasm.. I been dealing with it 17 years but just recently it's spasms when i even think about it.. I been diagnosed with central sensitization.. Ive got it that its trauma based... Read most of john sarnos books.. But still got the problem.. I just read that botox can actually shut the muscle down.. So the brain cant communicate... If i go for it ill let you know.. How it goes.. But honestly being unable to work and not pay the bills is a worry..honestly im sure you know but its not just a slight spasms... It unbearably painful....great channel by the way..ive got plenty to watch.. I may actually get to book an appointment with you if im no further forward in the next 2 weeks

      @@richardbranson8658 Hi Richard, I am wondering if you have tried botox and if it helped you? I tried it and it didn't take my pain down even by 1%. Waste of $500.

      @@Faith1199 hi yes i did try it i payed £200 for the botox on prescription and a back medicine doctor to inject it........it worked on the side he injected it for about a week.. But the symptom imperative kicked in within 2 days the pain switched to the other side.. I was actually amazed to witness it move as its always been on the same spot for 17 years.. Then after a week the pain moved back to the original area were it still is. I also got an unusual tightness in the middle back for a month after botox....botox actually gave me all kinds of weird sensations.... No it didn't work..but it proved to me that it is tms... Trouble is now how to deal with the inner trauma.. Even 20 sessions of hypnosis hasn't helped.. Steroids injections didnt help.. Prolotherapy didn't help.. Nerve ablation of the lower facet joints made no difference.. And a bucket load of strong cbd oil has never helped... I have had a life of anxiety and trauma though.. I now truly believe it is tms causing my back agony..
