A few years back, I saw Graham Nash in concert, and, in setting up this song, he explained how, with a day off between gigs in England, he was picked up by a Rolls Royce limosine which took him to Stonehenge and Winchester. During the drive, he dropped some acid, and this song relates what he experienced during that trip.
This is a great song with which to make Whoopie, which is, of course, a melange of overripe prunes stewed in a soluble hybrid of armagnac and rosewater. I would also insist that "Cathedral" is the best song on the album, and one of their best of all. "Chicago" and "Ohio" are similar songs of protestation.
Graham Nash wrote this after an LSD trip in the Winchester
It is a Graham Nash ( The Hollies ) song. The other predominant voice is David Crosby ( The Byrds ).
Stephen Stills is from Buffalo Springfield ( as well as Neill Young ).
So many avenues of music to follow.

Crosby was talking against drugs at a concert I went too and the crowd almost booed them off the stage! Then they played this song and the crowd loved it and stood up stopped their feet and lost it!
Do you hear Stephen Still' voice, or his guitar? He refused to perform on this song.
Truly a high point when they did this song in concert - so much more powerful than the LP.

I like Liberpool Anglican Cathedral because it is where Paul McCartney premiered Liverpo Oratorio among other things. Plus the gift shop sells a good line in Beatles socks ! Lol
This was one of my favorite songs my first year in college in 1979 or 1980. I remember we were listening to this song when Mt St Helens blew! Oh the memories!

Within CSN, Crosby was the most experimental, Stills the best musicianship and melody writer, but Nash was the best lyricist of these three - musically, his songs tend to be fairly simple, but his words go really deep. This trio, working apart from Neil Young, needed Nash to provide the depth and gravitas that Neil provided when it was CSN&Y.

The entire CSN album is amazing. Not a bad track on it. In fact all 3 singers are at their creative peak. A true masterpiece.
