Why Apple Stopped Making Leather Cases

- Apple’s leather cases have been around since the iPhone 5s in 2013. They became popular among users who wanted something more premium and durable than Apple’s silicon cases. But despite their popularity, they’ve been discontinued. Along with every leather product Apple has offered.
So why is this? Well, Apple cited environmental reasons for the change. Saying, "Leather is a popular material for accessories, but it has a significant carbon footprint, to reduce our impact, we will no longer use leather in any new Apple product, including watchbands, and that starts today.” - Наука та технологія

So, basically they stated environmental issues as an excuse while profiting of a cheap manufactured material.
Not an excuse, moving to “environmentally friendly” materials doubles as a marketing stunt
@@ganderthepanda8146 while also virtue signaling.
“This is the way!”

This is why apple is a greedy scummy company. Samsung would never
Short answer: They're using the environment as an excuse to be cheap
my brother in christ they make millions per day
@@rattfishyep, that's because they do things like this.
And increase profits.
Well leather is bad for the environment
@@will532yeah and making iPhone is good for environment.
They did it for profit margins If they didn’t care about money and they only cared about the environment they would’ve made the cases cheaper since they’re not leather anymore.
exactly, let me offer you a worse product for the same amount of money. i’m afraid all companies are turning to this with vegan alternatives
And the worst part is.. people keep buying this stuff to make themselves “feel better”
I feel like companies realized they can charge consumers more by using the idea of being environmentally friendly without anyone even questioning it. Them offering a worse product for still the same amount of inflated price. I’m seeing it with electric cars too.
Sshhhh
Well I mean, it is a scammy practice but I’m sure environmental factors played a small role in it. Of course like you said profit margins are the greatest benefit in a corporation’s eyes but I’m sure environmental factors play a role in it (even if it’s just for marketing)
The fine woven case is one of Apple’s biggest failures, even the ones shown of the store look like they were used for a year. I rushed to a local distributor and bought a leather magsafe wallet because it gets discontinued.
Agreed
I don’t know mate apples had some pretty pretty big failures which have done a lot worse than this
magsafe wallet? u wanna lose your wallet?
You have not seen the $129 Apple iPhone 12 pro max leather SLEEVE yet, have you? lol
leather case was not durable as well and the color faint after a week use
I love how apple explained has slowly transitioned from being an informative channel about apple to exposing apple's sly business tactics.
Its still informative, just negative
@@JC-tg5xxright. At least it is no longer Pro-Apple propaganda
I like Apple but I like the truth more.
Even they can’t stand corporate BS
I hope Apple stops being so cheap because they're a high end manufacturer, but instead they make high end devices and cheap out on everything else. Shame on Apple. (But an upside is that they essentially give away customers to third party companies like Belkin because they don't cheap out in my experience.)
@@yourlocalidiot69420 in my experience with Apple the Highest quality accessory they've released so far is the new Type-C USB cable that comes with new iPhones (15 series onward) and some of the iPads are type c and have this *much better cable*
Their previous lightning cables and cases and the like to me have always felt *extremely cheap* esp with what $ you pay for the cases
Perhaps their previous genuine leather cases felt high quality idk but everything else has been dollar store-feel cheap in the name of "saving the environment"
Leather is literally a hundred times more sustainable than petroleum based materials. Just use recycled hides from beef cattle so you cancel out some of the impact and don’t compromise durability.
Precisely. This whole eco-terrorism is for people who don't read.
Leather is a big part of meat industry profits, there is literally nothing sustainable about it.
What's funny is that since leather is natural, you could in theory bury it in the ground and it will be decomposed in a few decades. Finewoven will never decompose as it is a man made material.
@@faythang2513Chrome tanned leathers like apple used do not decompose in the ground. They aren't environmentally friendly at all.
Apple acts as if cattle are being slaughtered for leather,
Leather are just by products of cattle slaughtering. Cattles are slaughtered for meat, not leather. Reusing the leather (instead of letting it rot) is in fact sustainable.
Leather cases have longevity too. Its the only material that becomes more beautiful as it ages and gets worn. I only had one Apple leather case for my 8 plus while i had countless cases for my iphone 13.
And now they sell this cheap, ugly material that look horrible after 1 month yet sold at the price of leather.
So they wanted to switch out leather for a cheaper option to make more a profit and labeled it under "environmental reasons" just like they did with the charging brick, headphones, and plastic wrap. Everything they do is just to give you less, and to give them more.
wait what’s bad about leaving out the plastic wrap?
@@jxns3717nothing inherently wrong since it's not important it's just that apple is so annoying and pretentious with it they'll tout how environmentally friendly they are for removing plastic wrap and changing materials even though it's all just green washing for the sake of profit. If they cared about the environment they would make airpods repairable instead of making them complete plastic waste when the battery degrades for example...
Yeah, no shit. It's called capitalism.
@@jxns3717the rest of the changes are obviously to inflate profit margins, but honestly, I like the absence of plastic wraps. Packaging is annoying to deal with, and the less, the better.
Plus, paper tabs make it so that you can’t just reseal a product and try to pass it off as new.
@@yaygya exactly my point, yeah. Plastic is dumb
Fine Woven micro-twill has an equal carbon footprint as leather. Consumers are paying higher prices yet are getting less quality and quantity.
I wonder if leather being a byproduct of the meat industry actually makes leather the better option?
@@jarrodlucky3366
when the alternative is just throwing the hides away, for sure.
@@jarrodlucky3366 leather is not "just a byproduct of meat industry" its price is very significant, so it is a regular product. That means the animals are not just killed for the meat so i dont really think that its a good option.
source: i made it up
@@mikiprimus You're actually wrong on that. While leather isn't exactly a "byproduct" it is a "coproduct". Nevertheless, no cows are being slaughtered for the hide. The sole reason cows are being killed is for meat. Fur is a whole other thing though
It is ALL about profits. If the new material cost more than leather, do you still think they would have switched? No. Companies only care about profits, ever.
They lie on our faces and make us pay more for less
Removing the leather cases was a shitty move from Apple. They made the iPhones look and feel more premium. I had three of them and loved it.
I’m getting Andar or Bullstrap the next time. No way I’m paying money for the finewoven crap.
Don’t buy Andar. They cheat their customers.
I’ve been running a later case for 1.5 yrs, I really like it (went from the leather case, which was my favourite!)
Its strange that some people consider carrying a bodypart as something premium.
@@mikiprimus leather is a very wasteful material, and the world would be better off without leather products. However it does not change the fact that it feels premium, it looks premium, it smells premium, and it wears exceptionally well - and for those reasons I don’t find it strange that people
consider leather to be a premium material.
The quality of Apple's leather cases ever since the iPhone 12 went downhill probably due to MagSafe. But the fact that their last leather case version is better than finewoven and both have the same price point says a lot about Apple's greedy tactics.
I ended up getting a $9 clear case on eBay for my 15 Pro, looks grea and does the job, plus also shows off the Titanium finish.
Elago silicone cade is great for those who wants a cheaper silicone case, its grippy although dust magnet
Thanks for honesty! ❤️
I have two complaints about the fine woven case from my experience, first it scratches and stains easily, and it’s leaving an imprint on my MagSafe charger slowly dyeing it the color of my case
its almost like using fabric on something not meant to be washed is a dumbass idea.
Lol thats cute if it dye it
They literally did that mainly because they were too durable and they want to have more sales
That…doesn’t make any sense.

@@hullstar242Of course it does. If they’re durable people will buy the case once and keep it forever
Nowadays, swapping leather to anything else is a trend for "enviromental" reasons. I'm asking, how any, plastic-based fabric is gonna be more environmentally friendly than leather, which is you know, organic, but that's not the major point.
The other, and most important thing is that leather can be extremely durable, a leather jacket for instance lasts 3-4 times longer than something made of imitation leather, that starts to "decompose" after 2-3 years.
The same goes to the FineWoven case. A leather case is muc more durable, and it even gets some patina over the years, which can make it even dearer to its owner. On the other hand, I suppose FineWoven gets damaged and ugly after a year or so.
This phenonenon creates the vicious cycle that is mentioned in the video. Fabric is cheaper to produce than leather and what is more, less durable, which means people will spend more money.
Yeah. I once had an imitation leather wallet. It started to break apart after a short while. Then I bought a wallet made from real leather which is still good after many years.
R.I.P. animal which had to die for my durable wallet.
@@cube2foxIronically, its extremely likely no animal died directly for your leather wallet. Almost all leather (in fact, i would probably say ALL leather) is simply a by product of the meat industry anyway. unless we dramatically reduce our meat consumption (which i do support), animal skins are just going to go to waste if we continue to be at war with it - which is the opposite of environmentally, or indeed ethically produced meat.
@@jameshodgetts7541 Wow really? If this is true then all the "vegan leather" stuff is doubly stupid.
true
@@cube2fox the term vegan leather is really annoying to me, because it’s just a more marketing friendly term for vinyl, or plastic.
What I don’t get is why cloths are so slept on as a material for things like a phone case, there’s plenty of premium feeling cloths that aren’t oil based ( I know the answer is oil based is cheaper but there’s gotta be SOME company out there that actually wants an eco-conscious solution)
Before I started using the later case, the leather case was by far the best case I’ve ever had. The only case that after 4+ years wear actually improved the look and feel of the product. I miss this case, but the later case after 1.5 yrs has done me well!
Appreciate the unbiased reporting! Disappointed in the outcome but accepting this is how they do business.
Man Apple Explained will never run out of ideas huh?

I didn't even know Apple made leather cases in the first place.
Whenever a large company says they are doing something "for the environment", you can usually assume that actually means "for their wallet".
matte cases are my go-to so apple cases never really caught my eye
i was going to buy a leather one for my 15 pro max, but i missed that part in the apple event where they discontinued them
rocking an ESR classic hybrid clear case, ITS AMAZING! but a bit thick, i've only dropped my phone once after having it for 3 months so i might go for a spigen thin fit matte case next

TORRO cases are a good alternative. Leather mellows with age/use. Had one on my SE for 7 years and the leather is fine. Plastic phone holding frame bit- broke after about 5years but still useable.
I had one, it didn’t last.
Although, people asked me where did you get this case?
That’s not what irks me, what irks me is that Apple RECALLED all the leather products back from all the major retailers essentially forcing that fine woven crap down our throats. I had to search thought eBay to find my wife a used MagSafe leather wallet because we just upgraded her it was annoying.

I finally know Apple Explained doesn't secretly work for Apple LMAO - would only be a reasonable assumption considering the amount of polish in each video, really love the effort!
The new fabric case felt nice in the hand on Day 1.
Now about Day 90 and it looks like its 3 years old.
The leather cases lasted longer so less emissions from manufacturing and transport. Nudient do some great cases, have the clear case on my 15 pro.
I have gone through 3 silicon cases for yellowing and now i have a leather case and its lasted longer than all 3 plastic ones so please tell me how switching away from leather is more environmentally friendly
my silicon last longer than leather one lol
No problem. There are plenty of third party companies that will sell me a leather case or other leather accessory.
I have had a magsafe leather wallet for a year now and can confirm that the material is some top-tier stuff. Shame it’s not available anymore.
it may boost their profits but only as long as people will buy this new material case, its unlikely that i would do, for original apple case id continue to buy silicone instead which is cheaper and can be even discounted in some retail stores
The old pixel "fabric" cases made of recycled materials were some of the best looking and feeling cases.
They do all this for us! So thoughtful
Why thes stopped doing those cases with battery in them ?
Yea Apple wanted to reduce the carbon footprint in the bank account.
I’m tired of these companies literally using the environment as an excuse for more profit
For Apple to say it was the carbon footprint of leather that made them stop whilst they used chrome tanned leather the whole time is just crazy.
To replace it with the FineWoven cases that have much higher margins but are worse in every way.
I like my fine woven better than my old leather case from my old iPhone . Why can’t they just make both
Man, I miss the silicone cases for my iPhone 14.
I once asked a millennial genius at the Apple store. If it was just the model I needed, but they didn’t have a good answer… At least they didn’t have an answer prepared at that time.
I have preferred the Apple leather cases since my 5S and have purchased one for every iPhone that I’ve had even though I will often have an OtterBox for a weekend hike or travel. I have dropped so many times and not had a single problem.
I do not understand the logic behind screen shields so gorilla glass and leather was the way to go!
Rather late in the game, I purchased an XR as I need a second phone and that’s when I discovered there was no leather case for the XR. I don’t believe the excuses… I don’t really care about the reasons… But they definitely definitely limited my choices in cases from this point forward. Silicone cases are fun and colorful, but leather and an OtterBox were my two choices.
My leather band for the Apple watch is still going strong after a year of super heavy use.
Easily the greatest case series ever made. You could drop your phone off the Burj Khalifa in this case and it wouldn't break.. yet a $300 otterbox destroys your phone after falling on carpet from waist height. RIP to one of the legendary Apple lines. 😭
Can we talk about how awful the new updates rolling out for iOS and WatchOS? There's so MANY bugs and crashes, it's crazy.
Can’t remember the time I ever bought an Apple Leather case for any of my iPhones. Cheap, soft gel, cases from Amazon all the way.
Same, going above $20 for a case unless it’s like Urban Armour or Otterbox seems crazy to me when I’ve had a plastic clear case on my iPhone X without any cracks 😂
I’ve got a bunch of Apple silicon cases all bought for $20-$25 on sale from Amazon.
Those cheap cases from Amazon are trash 🗑️ and discolour in no time at all.I’d rather pay more for a decent one.
@@davidjacobs6244 idk man, my Spigen cases usually last the entire year, might yellow towards the end but another case doesn’t cost much
I used to do that but i recently got a leather case and the buttons feel shockingly good compared to all the cheap cases ive used in the past. It wasn't even something I was considering when buying, the buttons just feel like theres no case at all
Exactly!
How about tpu leather??
my fine woven case is one month old and is half rip 😢😢
As soon as I heard this announcement a while back, I immediately ordered a spare leather case. Lol
I've had a finewoven case for just a few weeks and its already looking very worn. It absorbs oils/liquids extremely easily from your hands and any surface you put it down on. Small grease spots on the table you put it on? Permanent stain. Moisturised then pick up your phone? Stain.
It's useless. Always liked the Apple leather cases as they develop a nice patina and self heal scratches over time. I will not be buying another apple case.
It's all about money at the end of the day for accountant Tim Apple.
Well I mean, they won’t get to use it for the watches with the USA ban just saying…..
I got lucky to buy a leather case for my iPhone 13, then shortly after Leather cases got discontinued, my phone fell out of my pocket onto gravel while running and now the case is damaged, without being able to replace it..
Straight out of Ford’s playbook. Introduce something like a truck then in year 2,3,4,5 slowly take minor features out of it but don’t reduce the price.
I’m just gonna stick to the silicone case on my iPhone 12, thank you very much. 😅

Omg he does I bet if you got to local gas station you’ll find more wild idksterling
I sincerely hate the new woven case. It’s got a terrible hand feel and it is fragile. The silicone cases are awful because they collect and stick to everything they touch. I am done with Apple cases if the leather case does not come back.
The best part about FineWoven is the name.
There are other third party brands making MagSafe wallets and cases in a much better synthetic leather alternative than finewoven
Im glad I got my leather apple watch bands.
It didn’t boost their profits if you no longer buy the case. I bought their case on release day for years but this year I bought cases on Amazon.

Cut cost
I bought a generic leather case on Amazon and it’s actually better than the 4-5 apple OE ones I bought the last few yeara
i remember the switch to not including the charging brick and earpods and apple saying it was for environmental reasons felt like such an obvious spin on a money saving decision hehe
Yeah ahah especially since they changed the end of the cable to USB-C so ppl needed to get a charge brick separately. So instead of getting one box, they were shipping two. How is that environmental??
@@mustafaaniladanirI'm probably wrong as I don't use apple stuff, but doesn't the newer iPhones already expect you to have a type c brick with their C to lightning cable?
I had a leather case. It falls apart and loses a colour really quick.
Damn, personally I really love the texture of their leather case, such a shame that this is continued
They made a great leather case for the iPhone X but sometime between the IPhone X and the 13 Pro I got they went to a low quality and thin leather. My iPhone 13 Pro Max leather case Apple made disintegrated after like a year or so and I had to replace it. I still have my iPhone X in its original leather case I bought the day I picked up the phone in 2017 and it is in great shape. I will never buy another Apple case after seeing how low quality this last one was.
Rip to leather i wanted one
There are plenty of leather premium third-party options.
There are still some that are made by Apple in Amazon and other e-commerce platforms (beware of fake ones though) except for the iPhone 15s. If you don't want to spend the effort then go to third parties instead because Apple really screwed us over with the finewoven cases.
I never knew this was a thing.
damn the thing is i think the material looks sick and I would buy it if it wasn’t so damn expensive
For anyone wondering, I bought an iPhone 14 Plus leather case for my 15 plus and it fits perfect
I really liked the MacBook Leather Sleeves
I would have bought a Apple leather case for my iPhone 15 pro but because they don’t produce it any more I took one from Wiiuka and the quality is so much better than any leather products Apple ever produced. It costs 50€, is made in Germany and quality leather (unlike Apple) is used.
Oh…
Apple is worried about their carbon footprint? That’s really rich coming from a company who feels the need to release five different iPhone models, three different iPad models, a bunch of Mac models, new AirPods, etc. every single year claiming they are soooo much better than last year‘s models, when really it’s the same exact one as last year’s. Why upgrade to the brand new iPhone 16 later this year when it is exactly the same as the iPhone 15? Oh, you need to upgrade to iPhone 16 because apparently the camera has 0.001 more megapixels than the iPhone 15! Apple is so concerned about their carbon footprint, yet they somehow convince all of us to upgrade to the latest models every year even though it’s no better than last year‘s. Then all of our “old” iPhones/iPads just get added to the ever growing pile of Apple’s e-waste, adding more to their carbon footprint.
How is using a compound of synthetic materials any more environmentally friendly than a biodegradable, otherwise waste product from livestock?
Google’s fabric case was miles better than fine woven!
Apple should’ve looked into leather alternatives. I don’t mind environmental efforts if they actually benefit the environment, but the FineWoven material is awful. I returned mine to Apple and even the store employee said it was poor quality, and that loads of them had been returned. I can’t see Apple continuing with this material in its current state.
Wanted to buy my first apple case on my 15 but aint gonna happen now they discontinued Leather.

Leather is a byproduct of the food industry. That said, Apple’s leather cases have been declining in quality since the iPhone 6. While those for the iPhone 6 (and the iPad back then) were still dyed through leather and acquired a nice patina, later cases were just painted. The paint wore off after a few months, making them look awful. It’s the same approach IKEA are taking. Glass in the picture frames was replaced by plastic, which reduces production cost, weight, and shipping cost - but not the price charged to the end consumer. All the while they’re introducing more plastic in the environment - great job.
