Why Apple Is Allowing Emulators
Вставка
- Опубліковано 25 кві 2024
- Apple recently changed their App Stores rules to begin allowing iPhone emulators. Which are essentially apps that imitate game consoles. These have always been available on Android, but until now, could only be added to jailbroken iOS devices. So why is Apple finally allowing emulators in 2024? Well, the first reason is competition.

I enjoy using my iPhone, but that doesn't mean that the occasional twisting of Apple's arm to force the addition of more features is a bad thing.
Apple be like: Fine have your emulators, but only because we got sued into it
@@SbinnalaI don't remember Nintendo saying that, iirc they hate emulators and do everything to take them down.
Tsundere apple
And they had to do something to make it worse. You know, the Apple way. This time they‘re not allowing JIT so no emulation past ps1 and many emulation apps wouldn’t work without it.

The EU and US hates apple!
@@Ciurk We hate em outside of the US and EU also.
It took years and lawsuits, but it’s good to see competition
Now we need JIT on ios
Honestly it’s good it happened, mainly because it’s introduced so many people to emulation. The fact Delta is #1 on the App Store is proof of that. And best of all Nintendo can’t stop it as their ninjas pale in comparison to Tim Cook’s entire legal department.
It's sad. Delta is such a barebones app compared to what Android offers, like Gamecube, wii, PSP, and ps2 emulation.
iPhone users are happy with scraps.
@@AndreVictorGoncalves Put the phone warring down for a sec and look at the bigger picture. While yes emulation on iOS is nowhere near as good as on Android, so many new emulation users are being born because of it, and it’s a giant middle finger to Nintendo. We share a common enemy
@@AndreVictorGoncalves salty android user lmao
@@AndreVictorGoncalves Apple didn't open everything. Unfortuanately for consoles like these who are a little more CPU heavier to emulate you need something called JIT. But Apple doesn't allow JIT apps on the AppStore and since the newest iPhone would have 20 fps gameplay without JIT, these emulators aren't in the AppStore but only available through non-Apple Sideloading. That way you can get JIT although it's a much less ideal process.
Hey there, it’s you again! Sincere apologies for talking your ass off in another comments section-hope I wasn’t too much of an annoyance.
I would hesitate to see Apple as a “champion” in here as well; they too recently got involved in their own lawsuit against an emulator and lost, on top of all the competition business. And companies actually do not like engaging in tedious litigation against other big companies, so I think it’s likely Apple would side with Nintendo if Nintendo gave them good cause to take down Delta.
But Nintendo’s bound to know of Delta now, it’s been out for a couple weeks and in news headlines + at the top of the Apple charts. I think what’s actually giving Nintendo pause in acting against Delta is 1) potentially trusting Apple’s vetting process enough to not feel the need to intervene, since Apple has taken down emulators for not meeting their guidelines even after lifting the overall emulator ban (and remember, the Dolphin incident happened after Steam reached out to Nintendo for confirmation first), and 2) less potentially (though it’d be surprising) Nintendo actually seeing the widespread reach of this product for once and fearing about the potential PR impact. I know it’s not likely since they’re so brazen though and just took down every Nintendo-related GMod creation after 20 whole years, which is why it’s probably more of 1)-surely Nintendo has had enough time to take down the game by now.
In any case, it’s a good thing to get into Nintendo’s heads. I want them to do better, be better, and be more worthy of the massive pool of fan loyalty they have.
The way I see it at present is-Nintendo are IP landlords, and they’re as irrational about monetising, controlling and restricting use of their property as real abusive landlords can be. Why let houses stand empty as prices continue soaring and people are out on the streets, for instance? It’s the same deal with Nintendo.
Nintendo vs Apple in a lawsuit
I would pay a ticket to see this fight 😭😭
Nintendo only bullies smaller companies, Apple too big for their taste
Emulation through Delta (one of the bigger names in the iOS console emulation space) has been available for non-jailbroken devices for years through Riley Testut’s Altstore and AltServer app signing and installation system that released in 2019. AltStore could also be used to add other emulators or even other alternate app repositories to a non-jailbroken iOS device. Sideloading’s been there for years. Only just now Apple’s forced to admit it actually did support sideloading of some form.
Correct. Though non-JB Sideloading kinda exists since iOS 7 and in some form even iOS 6. AltStore indeed is a thing since 2019 though. Before then there were other options.
Now that it’s available in the App Store there’s no more need for signing. It’s all a matter of convenience & I welcome it
@@171sako There is. If you want JIT you need to Sideload because Apple is Apple.
iPhone now emulates DS.
Android now emulates Windows.
😂
Sure have a laugh, but is that emulated windows a pleasant experience? (you deserve a slap the moment you mention samsung dex)
Well, UTM exists...
@@mr.cringe61that’s not on the App Store yet, but android has had windows emulators for hmmm… probably half a decade or something now on the play store
@@countryland69 Regardless. Sideload UTM and you're good to go. You can even use JIT that way. Android may have had Windows Emulators forever but iOS has gaming emulators since its existence even before the AppStore released.
@@mr.cringe61I wish UTM SE was on the App Store but the developers don’t care about releasing it to the App Store.
Whatever makes Nintendo angry makes me happy
No one at Nintendo is probably angry though
@@dampkingoh they totally are.
@@dampkingThey sell their old games for 60$ in the Nintendo eShop, of course they will get mad if you can emulate them for free instead.
Perhaps, but they would’ve taken action against Delta earlier if they really wanted to since they’re bound to know it by now; it’s at the top of the charts and their lawyers keep up with the news. And Apple would be willing to cooperate with them too if Nintendo gave them good cause to take down Delta with a DMCA claim, companies do not actually like getting in tedious litigation with other companies for fun.
Realistically, I think one reason for this might be that they trust the stringency of Apple’s vetting process since they aren’t just letting EVERY emulator on there + have actively taken down other emulators even after lifting the overall ban for violating regulations. Plus, Nintendo has no shame at all, but maybe, just maybe, seeing the game maintain its place at the top so long has finally given them pause for the sake of the potential PR backlash they might receive. I can only hope so.
@@dampkingif that was true, they wouldn’t constantly go out of their way to threaten/sue and shut down any fan and their fanmade games, for the past 20 years
Nintendo should just make their own emulator for App Store and Play Store and sell the genuine roms and make a profit out of it.
Hell if they put the Nintendo emulator which is more than capable for emulation would probably kill the emulation scene(for Nintendo emulators specifically).
Nintendo is anti fun

thats very true, well iirc a lot of their games were rereleased on Wii and Wii U as an "virtual console", usually Wii version was far better than Wii U. Of course on switch they are nowhere to be found. So if someone wants a "legal" (after the shop has closed You need to get files from somewhere else than nintendo xDddd) way to play these games I recommend a modded Wii.

You didn’t have to jailbreak to get emulators, you could simply sideload them.
right, I was looking for someone to point that out. I don't know how one can make such a simple mistake, and the fact that app isn't available in EU app store, but will be trough downloading from web
You could side load them, but not simply.

@@omariboy1995 and even then it comes with annoying restrictions like how you can only have 10 sideloaded apps total. And not even 10 because the altstore itself takes 2, and then some apps also take 2
Honestly, I am happy about this. With apple devices, I always felt locked in for having to use browser-based emulators. I’m glad that I no longer need to use Javatari or Emulatorgames.
They got sued to remove emulators, now they got sued to add emulators💀
I just have one thing to say:

It always take some government arm twisting to get these companies to open their markets up to allow users to use the products purchased from said company in the manner they wish to use them without oversight.
Honestly the first point is so valid. I nearly switched over to android because I wanted to tinker with the phone
To the last point... Nintendo and Sony never go after emulator devs unless it's for a current gen system that games are still being made and sold for.
But they don't bother with older systems and you can find emulators for them all over Android's Play Store.
What's your source for the first reason, or is it just speculation? I just don't think it has to do with staying competitive at all, or wanting to finally allow them to compete with Android. I think it is all just a side benefit of the EU requiring them to allow app side loading.
My only complaint with the delta APP is that I can’t resize or move the control bottoms lol
Besides that I’m glad Apple is Finally allowing us to use this feature ❤❤❤
Developers have been sued emulators on the Google play store, right? Then they will not sue emulators on the App Store. Please correct me if I am wrong.
Hi apple explained. I know you probably won’t see this, but I need an explanation for this. I was at a concert the other day, and I had my IPhone 13 in my pocket. I usually like to fidget with my phone in my pocket, and sometimes I search up something random, so it was no surprise when I found out I had accidentally taken some videos in my pocket. The first weird thing with this video is that in one place it says it’s 6:48 minutes long, but in another it’s close to 40. I started listening. About a minute or 2 into this video, I was listening to a song from the concert, and then the audio cut out. Not abruptly though, it had the “bew” sound if you know what I mean. Like a slowed down laser sound effect. And I thought there was no audio after that, but then when I maxed out the audio on my phone, it sounded very creepy. It was like a heartbeat, and there was maybe remnants of the song in there? I don’t know. Just tell me what happened.
I had no idea they allowed this now…
Went to the App Store right after the video started and by the time it ended I was playing a certain firey pocket monster game lol
I reeeealy hope a PS2 emulator makes it to the AppStore soon
Emulating PS2 requires a more powerful cpu than phones are capable of.
@@MA-rf6bu
PS2
CPU: MIPS R5900 Emotion Engine @ 294.912 MHz
GPU: up to 6.2 GIGAFLOPS (147 MHz)
RAM: 32MB
iPhone 15 Pro
CPU: A17 Pro Hexa-core @ 3.78 GHz
GPU: up to 2.147 TERRAFLOPS (1398 MHz)
RAM: 8GB
While these specs are obviously not an apples-to-apples* comparison, there is certainly enough compute power (on paper) for the latest iPhone to be running a PS2 emulator. PPSSPP developers have already talked about getting PSP emulator on the App Store, hopefully it’s only time until PS2 makes it too.
*no pun intended
@@MA-rf6buactually they can do it with a special capability called JIT, but it can’t be enabled except on WebKit, or in the EU, for third-party browser engines only.

I might try iPhone if it wasn't so much more expensive with such little return for me.
Try an SE iPhone. They're relatively cheaper, but got chips more powerful than flagship androids and get about 5 or 6 years of support. Androids are usually packed with more features, but at the cost of stability, security, and longevity.

Nintendo and Sony would never want to stop people from using emulators. It’s not like they want to sell more GBAs and PS1s. The more people play their old games the better the sequels will sell.
They did it to prove a point to the EU. They constantly said for years side loading was banned because of harmful apps people would add and those harmful apps are why they needed they're walled garden. Big companies hate consumer emulation and equate it to piracy and I guarentee Apple will use these emulators as leverage against the EU in future and current law disputes. Especially when you have Apple kids putting ROM site names in reviews.
Yeah i was not crazy when i said to someone that chrome os have more functionality than your average ios device, and yep that includes GameCube emulators From the play store or Linux available to use on any Chromebook xd

There is actually legal precedent for emulators. Thanks to the first commercial emulator called *Bleem!* Which was a PS1 emulator that came out in 1999.
Sony sued Bleem! (Sony Computer Entertainment America v. Bleem) over violations of copyright... and lost.
According to a summary by Wikipedia over the emulation part of the lawsuit:
"Sony had accused Bleem! of engaging in unfair competition by allowing PlayStation BIOSs to be used on a personal computer as this would ultimately damage Sony's sales of the PlayStation. The Judge had rejected the notion, and issued a protective order to "protect David from Goliath"."
A great video that goes over this is LGR's video titled *LGR Oddware - Bleem! Commercial PlayStation Emulator*

Sadly these emulators are not available in Europe
I don't think the lawsuits should have been filed, but I am REALLY happy to finally have an emulator in my pocket
Now release transmission to iOS and I have no reason to think about it
How can Nintendo go on about cease and desist againts the emulator applications? They have nothing to do with the games itself.
Apple could single handily uproot Nintendo’s whole business philosophy, and I think it’s a good thing; I don’t want to give a third party seller for example Pokémon Platinum that goes for around $400 (+/- $70) for a complete set manuals and all or half that for just the cartridge and case then halved again for cartridge only. Like Nintendo could still sell their consoles lots of people will still buy however for Nintendo’s out of production/discontinued games those should be available to purchase legit versions that work on any emulator or flash card.
But Nintendo is too far up their own ass to see that the consumer wants something so simple yet it would embarrass the whole company that their ip’s are “reduced” respect/decency or someshit like that.

Yeah I feel like it's going to be ironic when shortly after allowing these on iOS, those developers (not Apple) will start getting a lot more lawsuits for trademark and IP infringement if not just plain old DMCA. I look forward to Sony and Nintendo solving this issue for Apple lol
