The song itself was actually built around the piano melody that their old drummer The Rev brought in, and it was originally meant to be a fun song for a Halloween themed project, but management basically said they’d be insane not to put in on an album, it’s now recognised as one of the bands all time classics.
I mean at first this song was made for pinkly smooth and like u said.
The Rev was the most eccentric genius of a song writer to ever exist. Check out some Pinkly Smooth Songs, (The Rev and Synyster’s side project) necromance theater is a good one to start with, and it’ll all make sense. All of the band members were huge Mr Bungle fans as well.

As far as I know it was supposed to be for fun for their Halloween album and the rev did it all the songwriting and piano , and then they liked it too much that they threw it onto an actual album the self titled one

@@t0aster_b4thi believe he did the studio version's third chorus and the live performance. I know the studio's bridge was sung by a female, her name escapes me. No idea if she played any part in the third chorus and vice versa with rev in the bridge

There is only so many hours in a day. The only album from this band I own is City Of Evil and it's my first time hearing this song too. It's pretty good.

Dude it's so screwed up but I really do love the song musically so I have to listen to it. Honestly took me a few years to give it a chance because I heard it was screwed up. Honestly it's a great Halloween song
The first part (where it's just him killing her) turned me off and I thought that would be the whole song, but of course they took it further than that and turned it into a hilariously messed up story that ended up being a love story in the end 😭

Very talented band, but I just can't get into Matt as a vocalist though for some reason.
I think that’s normal, I think many don’t like his vocals. I personally like them, but I also grew up listening to their music so I might just gotten used to it.
His slightly vocals changed with the newer albums (newest one and The Stage) so might be worth checking out to see if there’s a difference or not.
I personally take a while to warm up to certain vocals too (Periphery, Sleep Token) but eventually it clicks and enjoy it. :)
