    Try approaching most of these loose surface obstacles with more momentum. Plus when you have 2 vehicles you can always let one attempt and the other stays to pull you out.

    As another Australian from Western Australia, its nice to meet someone who admits he doesnt have all the knowledge. One tip that JAMIE ATT said and I agree with him is to air down your tyres to 15 PSI or even lower, Dont go below 10 PSI as you run the risk of rolling the tyre off the rim. I carry two snatch straps, drag anchor chain, three compressors and there is a reason for the three as in the past and over many years, I have had two compressors fail on me. Dont drive in areas which are basically swamps because once you get stuck in a swamp , there is no chance of getting out, unless you have a back up vehicle to either snatch you out or winch you out. Keep going and keep learning. Experience through mistakes, makes you a more informed driver and knowledgeable. All the best from Western Australia in Perth - the most isolated city in the world. !

    Refreshing video. It's nice to hear someone say, "I am not an experienced off-roader" as too many "Experienced" people try their luck, and blame other elements (but themselves) when things go awry. Definitely subscribing.

    I know BFG A/T KO2's are popular in this community, but when it comes to sand, snow and basic mud (read NOT swamp) they just don't clear debris from tread, almost regardless of how much foot you put in it. There was i time when I wrenched, did sales and service, and finally ran auto shops. The KO2's were heavier, thus escalating rolling resistance over every one of the competitors - a fact we saw in theory and were able to play out in various scenarios. In my experience, for a good number of years, the Bridgestone Dueler A/Ts and later the Revo and Revo2's were outstanding. Again, speaking of actual traction. Today, it is hard to beat the Goodyear Duratrac, as much as I used to dislike their hard co.pounds in the 80's and 90's. The tread design is good, and the rubber, while not up to the soft and sticky compounds of yesteryear, is far better than anything they built in the prior 20 years. Unfortunately, Goodyear took a political stance that I cannot and will not accept, so they will no longer outfit my four 4X4s. So it is back to the drawing board for me. It really sucks because I literally bought a brand new set of 5 Duratracs 5 weeks ago. SMH

    Love the perspective of a fellow inexperienced off-roader! I think it'd be really interesting (and informative) if you went through some of the things you tried out in these situations. Like if you engaged A-Trac, rear-locker, crawl control, etc. Learning through failure is a great tool and it would be useful to see the shortcomings of these different driver aides and where they are best utilized.

    Good video man! I have the 2016 TRD PRO in Quicksand. Living in Florida I deal with a lot of mud and sand. Air down, Air down and Air down. 25 psi is what I do. IT WORKS! You get a bigger footprint especially with those KO2's that you are rocking. I use Nitto Trail Grapplers for my 4runner so far it works for me. Perfect decision you and Tyler made 2nd time around. That stuff is for the Jeeps. I know cause I go off roading all the time with my son who has a Jeep Wrangler and I just can't go through some of the insane stuff that he goes through, but my daily ride is 100 times better than his is:) Keep up the good work your gonna be a great off roader cause you have what a lot of people don't have. Common sense. Peace!

    I think one of the things that makes your videos so good is that you seem to be having genuine fun. It's always fun to see the Toyotas performing well, the crawl control has helped me in some rocks just this past weekend. I'm in an all stock white TRD Pro (with stock Terragrapplers) and I'm learning that the systems that Toyota has put in the vehicles like ours and the Tacoma actually are very helpful.
    Keep up the great work with the videos man, can't wait to watch this channel grow. It undoubtedly will grow large if you keep the positive and fun attitude :)

    You're seriously in need of a tire deflater and portable air compressor.. If you have had those two you would of made that soooo much easier... Rule of thumb, a pound of air for each inch of wheel and you're good...

    I see more people stuck in the sand than anywhere else. The key (like crawl control shows) is slow and steady to build momentum. Most 1st timers tend to panic/floor it straight to the frame

  • @Battlelabstudio
    @Battlelabstudio 7 років тому +1

    If you haven't done it already, you should build a tether for your GoPro. If the suction cups fail/release you don't lose it. Make it long enough that it doesn't drag on the road/ground and doesn't bounce against the body.

    • @SwellRunner
      @SwellRunner  7 років тому +1

      Aaahahahaha. Great minds.. great minds! Yep, after that incident, I've kept a paracord tether on it anytime it's mounted to the exterior of the vehicle. It's never fallen off since, but the tether keeps it a little more safe!

    Are you turning off traction control? Also i would suggest a winch on a hidden winch mount and a pulpal if you're gonna go out by yourself. That way you don't sit in a puddle for hours waiting on a buddy that you woke up to come dig you out

    • @SwellRunner
      @SwellRunner  7 років тому +2

      Absolutely. Traction control was off, 4lo with rear diff locked. Luckily I called Tyler much earlier than bedtime, and a winch and pull pal would have been great! I didn't realize this was going to turn into what it did. Great tips! A winch is on the list!

    Great video, thanks for sharing! You said you are an inexperienced off roader, but you made a wise decision about that muddy crossing - it looked like it would have been tough to cross. One thing I'm trying to get better at is using momentum, specifically knowing right when to gas it and how much speed to carry into a hole like that. I keep getting stuck b/c I hesitate. Those trails you're on look like a lot of fun. Keep making these great videos!

    You should air down to 15-20 psi on sand and rock crawling. It will get traction better. I had no problem while driving in sand at Great Sand Dunes National Park in Colorado and Pismo Beach in California last year with my 8,000 pounds 99 Chevy Suburban K1500 with 6" lifted and 35" mud tires. I have videos on here. You can checkout. I believe y'all should try Great Sand Dunes and free campsites in Preserve Park which is next to. I don't know if trailer could go but would love to see it. No longer than 14 ft trailer could make because narrow turns beyond the "no return of point" sign. Pismo Beach, u can pull trailer. Hundreds of RV goes there and camping. One thing in Pismo Beach if you want to drive in dunes, requires flag and pole. Rangers will be there and watching.

    Is that a K9 rack? How do you like it? Videos are awesome! Keep them coming!

      LOVE the rack! The finish seems to be crapping out though. But the rigidity and structural integrity hasn't skipped a beat yet!

      Jason Koertge awesome to hear. I've got a CVT tent on some Thule rails at the moment but I'm working on the rack. not sure which to get but I really like those K9 racks. Is it actually 2.2m end to end?

    if you aired down to say 15 or 20psi you most likely wouldn't need crawl control in the sand. I've never gotten stuck in 20 years of beach driving and I don't even have crawl control anyway

    • @SwellRunner
      @SwellRunner  7 років тому +1

      A lot of what the issue was in this sand was that it was not only super loose and deep - it was uphill. I'm actually planning on returning to this hill in a later vlog and attempting it aired down to see how much of a difference it will make.

    Are you guys still in the area? I’ve been in point Washington a couple times but never came across some of the spots in this video. If you are in the area still, drop a message on my channel somewhere. Would be cool to collab and team up on a trip sometime. We like to get out and camp and kayak and adventure.

      Crawl control has gotten me out of a few messes, so I figured I would try here. Obviously didn't work! haha. I did have the rear diff locked, but a locking front diff, I don't think would have gotten me out of this one!
