DIY atlas stone. I made the mold out of paper mache. It turned out pretty well, I would recommend trying it yourself to save some serious money.

I used an inflated "punching" balloon to help form my mold. It's the variation that has a rubberband attached to it, it was the most spherical balloon i could find. I also used fiberglass in lieu of the newspaper for a reusable mold. Thanks for sharing.

glad I could help motivate. I thought about fiberglass but I was trying to make the mold as cheap as I could

Great job! How did you make the circle mold? How did you get the globe shape, to start off with?

You get one of those giant balls that you see on the end caps at Walmart or similar stores for 2 or 3 dollars. Pump it up to the appropriate circumference that you want your stone to weigh:
      54" 216 lbs
      56" 240 lbs
      58" 267 lbs
      60" 295 lbs

Put a flower pot over where the hole to fill it up with air is. Set it on a bucket and start paper machining. You need to put on several coats letting each coat dry before putting on the next one.
Be careful I have had a few balls pop when they get close to 60 inches!
Once you have all the layers let out the air of the ball with a ball pump needle and paint the inside with hodge podge or a similar product to water seal the inside.
Cover the outside with a layer of duct tape and set it half buried in some sand to prevent lopsidedness (I did not know about this with mine).
      Happy DIY

I cut it out with a box cutter.

I thought I could reuse the mold but it got too ruined when I was cutting it away. I made the mold for about $10 so it wasn't that big of a deal.

sorry mis understood the question. let the air out of the ball using a ball pump Needle. make sure you don't cover it when you make the mold

That's nice! I can do it, because I couldn't find molds here in Brazil.

I would put the mold baried half way in the ground and not on a tire. That way it will keep it from being mis shapen

you could have used a yoga ball

    • @jacobzappey
      @jacobzappey  6 років тому +1

At first that is what I thought about using. However I could not find one at any local stores that did not have ridges around them. I was concerned the ridges would make it easier to pick up. To order one with out ridges was about double what ordering a ball was. A yoga ball would work if you do not mind the texture on the finished stone.
