The instructions say to use zip ties, you can't expect people to know the instructions are wrong and to use something else. I'm not even sure if you can fit bolts in the holes for the zip ties.
@@zakutheferret8182 Every once in a while, we'll run into instructions that are inadequate. After seeing this, if I were making a hybrid stone, I'd put a bead of silicone or polyurethane between the halves. It'd be harder, but not impossible to seperate, but having a smooth stone would be worth it.
I was able to make atlas stones using hybrid molds without the equator ring. It's a little time consuming, but I used a bolt, two washers and a nut at each hole instead of using zip ties. Then, after filling the mold with cement I cleaned the lip and sealed it with gorilla tape. I've made three stones his way with great results. Cheers!
You could also add a finishing step. Sealing. Sealing the concrete helps preserve it. Keeps it from getting ashy and rough over time and also gives it that wet look.
@28:28 The nub at the top. When the concrete is still green (not fully cured after de-molding) take a brick or a large flat stone and rub it off like sanding a piece of wood. Much easier than waiting until fully cured. The same can be done on protruding seams. Also you can remove the mold after 24 hours. I wait 48 myself just because I feel like it..

Watching this made me miss doing concrete work. A piece of wood would probably be a great help to eliminate voids, just jab it around to help settle the concrete as you fill the mold.
You duct taped the crap out of the Slater Stone mold, why wouldn't you duct tape around the seam of the Hybrid Stone? That would keep it from leaking out concrete and water.
Awesome video Alan! makes me want to make an Atlas stone. Love the dogs too. Pretty funny, the week breaks I swear that pitt pup grew a few pounds in each one.
Pro tip for the hybrid stone molds, zip tie all the holes to align the mold, then drill more holes in-between the existing ones to create a tighter bond. That is if you don't have the money for slater molds. Cause a 12" slater mold is 120 dollars after shipping. A 12" eBay mold (which works well) is 85 after tax and shipping.
Hi Al, thanks for sharing your casting experiences. Just a thought: have you considered using inflexible grade bolts with a few graduated flat washers on each side instead of plastic cable to ties to fasten your mould with together tighter?
I'm sort of a concrete guy and I never thought of using silicone spay as form release, thanks for the tip. If I dont have release oil, I usually use vegetable oil but its pretty runny. The hybrid stone would of held together better with washers nuts and bolts.
A week in the mold ? Wow! I made some once with the hybrid type mood but I took them out after 24 hrs. Then I let them sit for about 1-2 weeks and sprayed them with the hose regularly. They ended up being super strong.
I have now made 6 Atlas Stones, using the hybrids. My first 2 failed. The next 4 have been really good. This is what I did with those 4. After spraying don’t join the 2 halves. Thanks for this amazing video! I got a mold like the black one you have. Is it still a good idea to tape it up and wrap it up with cling wrap to make sure it doesn't get dirty?
You run a piece of wide masking tape on the inside of the seam of the hybrid mold. Not Duct tape, you want thinner tape so it leaves less ridges on the finished stone.
Try using a coil style plumbing snake as a "vibrator" for getting the bubbles out of the concrete. You can attach it to a power drill but familiarize yourself with it first. This is very similar to the tools used to vibrate the bubbles out of concrete when building things like walls and loading docks.
I would put duct tape inside the hybrid mold and then spray it with silicone spray, you can prob. rent a concrete vibrator from the same place you rent cement mixer if you don't wanna do the wheelborrow way. If you have a vibrator you could just dig a small hole on your backyard to place the mold and after it has cured you could just roll it out and get mold off. Alan, you said don't give me any thing about not wearing gloves. Just google cement burn images. Serious stuff...... wet or dry it's poison on your skin.
I maybe have a tip for the hybrid mold. Before you spray it with silicone, take some of that tape...and put it inside, exactly where one half of mold meets the other. Cut it in on two areas and push it down a bit...so you can still put the molds together, without the tape intefering with the lips. If you put in the cement...the cement will push the tape up...and close the gap, where the water was coming out...and the edge won't look as bad anymore. I heared devil driver at the end...good taste in music!
Concrete is very strong in compression, but very weak in tension. Rebar is strong in tension, but buckles and bends when compressed. Combining the two makes for a very strong composite material that can be used to make strong and durable structures. The fibers in the concrete are doing the same, but they're also randomly oriented and pointing in different directions, unlike rebar. This means their relative tensile strength vs. rebar is going to be much lower in any particular direction, but they can evenly handle tensile stesses from all directions.
Hey man I know i'm literally 2 years late, but the tool you want is a mallet attachment for a power drill, theres one called "Radhammer" and you use it to bump air bubbles out of radiators :) cheap and effective
Easiest way to vibrate such a small volume : Put a sheet of hardwood on top of the mold and use the hammering function of a hammerdrill on top of it. The mold will pick up the vibration evenly all around. Another thing to prevent bubbles would be to prepare the concrete with a bit more water and to pour it while stirring it with a paint stirrer mounted on a drill to drive airbubbles out. Will increase the time to dry , but this is a good thing with concrete , since it gets more stable when drying out slower. The water leaks with the hybrid mold are a problem - the water takes the cement particles with it in the leaking areas and weakens the area considerable. It should be mentioned as well to prevent the cast from frost if you work in a cold climate and from direct sunexposure in a hot one. Just below room temperature throughout the whole drying process (28 days - rule of thumb) will provide the hardest balls xD
On the Hybrid Stone Mold, you needed to drill additional joining holes in between the ones that exist. I do concrete work, and could tell it would ooze as soon as you showed it with the zip ties.
I look up so much stuff on powerlifting and strong man and I almost turn up one of your videos. And I just realized I'm not subscribed. I fixed that issue!👍👍👍
I helped a friend cast big concrete sculptures (up to 10 ft) he designed. He used old inner tubes to tie the forms really tight. I'm not sure it'd work but it might be an alternate to duct tape.
Idk if you read theese but a great way to vibrate your molds is to take a cordless reciprocating saw "sawzall" and take the blade off put the flat part of the gaurd against your molds and run it a bit.
I use gorilla tape too but I only do the 8 strips and never had a problem. Make a little mound at the open and you won't have a flat spot. Bags for mixing makes it easy and quick. Cures in about a week.
I've never had a problem witg hybrid. also. when you fill it to the top. put a wet towel on it. helps with the water and gives it a much rounder top. not as flat as the video's

Alan, you said don't give me any thing about not wearing gloves. Just google cement burn images. Serious stuff...... wet or dry it's poison on your skin.
I wish id read your comment before leaving mine. lol
Very cool! Good job lifting the stones too!
They don't make concrete shaker cups?
This was very interesting to watch. Thank you Alan :)
Hey man I know i'm literally 2 years late, but the tool you want is a mallet attachment for a power drill, theres one called "Radhammer" and you use it to bump air bubbles out of radiators :) cheap and effective
truly interesting content dude, keep it up
Easiest way to vibrate such a small volume : Put a sheet of hardwood on top of the mold and use the hammering function of a hammerdrill on top of it.
(He is working with a circular mold) "One corner at a time." - Alan Thrall. Lol that untamed logic tho. Love your videos Alan, maintain untamed buddy!
Sweet, nice work. cool lil pb pup cruising around as well haha
Just as an FYI. If you read the instructions on the bags. It will tell you exactly how much water to add. Love your videos! :)
He said in the video to follow the instructions on the back of the bag for how much water to use
Must have missed it.
Idk if you read theese but a great way to vibrate your molds is to take a cordless reciprocating saw "sawzall" and take the blade off put the flat part of the gaurd against your molds and run it a bit.
Hi Alan
im confused at the time 5:17 you said one corner at the time. How can you find the corner on a globe???
I’m gonna make one of these. Always wanted one
