    The valve grinders are still very much in use today although younger mechanics probably don't know how to use those.
    In the marine those are quite common too still.
    Nice restoration nevertheless and subscribed of course.
    Edit, thanks no annoying unnecessary background music or noise.

    Nice job. I bought a Black and Decker from the 1930's that looks much like yours. Oil and grease made it work. It runs truer than a Sioux Falls at the local engine shop. Best part of the deal was the cost on Ebay, $.99.

    I owned and used an identical machine in the 1960s, but it was made in the US. Dewet was a French company and I wonder if these were made under license. Excellent job on a high quality machine. Hope you can find the right grinding wheel for it.

    What was wrong with the original paint?? Your finish has none of the solid character of the irreplaceable quality and patina of the paint you removed. Why did you not use sealed bearings for the motor?

    figure out the size of the wheel.. goodson.com/collections/valve-refacing or www.cylinderheadsupply.com/valve-refacer-wheels.html and i am mostly deaf. but did you oil the bearings. it almost sounds like you destroyed the bearings pounding them in. leaving marks from pushing on the wrong race.. the spindle bearings in that are super precision and probably cost 500 bucks each new. as would almost any high speed grinder bearings. what to oil them with.. ZOOM Spout oiler with turbine oil.. not rust buster.

    • @forgottentoolsrestoration1786
      @forgottentoolsrestoration1786  5 років тому

      Thank you for the links ! Spindle bearings are standard 6302, excess play seems to disappear when the left nut is torqued, with the spring part you see at 6:18. I will be more carefull with the fitting methods, thoses one had little to no resistance. Everything was re-oiled with motor oil before the test, but I will switch to turbine oil or equivalent for real use, thank you for the advices :)

    Excellent travail, j'apprécie ce vous avez fait parce que j'ai eu à restaurer ce genre d'équipement pour équiper mon atelier.
    Dans l'ensemble, votre vidéo est très représentatif de l,ensemble des opérations requises pour remettre en condition ce type d'équipement.
    Je ne m'arrête pas à l'aspect cosmétique de la restauration, cependant, au niveau de l'aspect fonctionnel, l'état du mandrin porte soupape semble avoir été négligé. en fait, la concentricité de la face active de la soupape par rapport à sa tige doit être de l'ordre de 0.001" ( 0.025mm), c'est précisément ce qui m,a demandé le plus d'énergie lors de la restauration de ma rectifieuse à soupapes.
    Dans mon cas, j'ai dû faire rectifier l'axe du porte soupape, fabriquer des bagues de friction sous calibrées en regard de l,axe rectifié et de remplacer le collet serre soupape afin d,obtenir une concentricité dans les normes.
    j'ai fait cette restauration il y a plus de 15 ans et cette machine me rend toujours un bon service malgré que je ne l'utilise pas souvent.

    • @Bannimann2
      @Bannimann2 5 років тому

      @@mykstreja8648 What do you not understand?
      A restoration means to put it back to factory specs, or as close as possible, which he easily could've done by reusing the original rivets - why he didn't, I do not know, they were not in bad condition - a preservation means you only lightly clean it up, you do not change the original paint regardless how bad it is, and you do not "ruin" the patina as mentioned by Russ Roepke, heck it do not even has to work properly to be called a preservation, that's the difference...

    • @mykstreja8648
      @mykstreja8648 5 років тому

      @@Bannimann2 It seems that there are as many definitions of what a "restoration" is as there are UA-camrs. Your response is a classic example: You didn't think that changing the paint was important but the rivets were. Russ felt that the loss of the patina was irresponsible. Personally I don't think the was a restoration since he didn't fix anything. In fact, nothing was broken. He made it pretty again and he did dress the one grind wheel. He didn't do an overhaul either else he would have packed the bearings or replaced them on principle. He didn't grease the gearing either. BUT, he did put in a lot of effort. I was just tweaking you, I didn't mean to insult you.

    The Left hand wheel was for Grinding the top of the valve stem.I work on a lot of older engines and on very old engines the top of the valve stem will be mushroomed so they need to be refaced. Plus,back when there were thousands of Ford Sidevalve engines in use,and lots of work came in such as valve jobs, you had to set the valve clearance by grinding the valve stem. As the valves were refaced in the machine,the end of the valve stem of course sat lower and decreased the valve clearance .A tedious job especially when you had to do 16 of them.
    If you ever get the opportunity to buy a seat grinder, you will find that the seat stones are also ground on the machine,so the grain marks on the valve head match the seat marks,usually at 45 degrees ,with the valve ground at 46.5 degrees. That means that only a thin contact line between valve and seat is made and very little lapping,if any ,is required. These days I use a tool post grinder in the lathe to valve heads.

      unless that the machine is intended to spend its remaining life on a shelf in the man's garage, it is the way to go.

    NICE. - BTW when grinding a valve you should never run it off the grinding wheel, you should always move it back and forth on the face of the wheel and then back the wheel away from it.

    The 60-year-old machine was opened, restored, not seen, checked the electric motor to see if it was still working, cleaned, painted and then reassembled to make sure it worked. This is unbelievable.

    You put alot of work & time into that thing!! Nice work man! I have a old souix im trying to do something similar too. Im trying to rebuild it but I dont need to go the lengths you went with yours. I need to get all new wiring for mine & clean it up good & remember how it all goes back together? I don't need to strip the paint of mine. I dont think its necessary so far? I may change my mind, we will see? I just want it work good, nice & true.

    You did a very nice job on the grinder. I just wish that you and other restoration channel's would explain about what you are doing and why. to alot of us this is pretty simple but there are alot of younger people that could learn from some commentary. Take the dovetail ways,gib and gib screws most people probably don't know how they work.

    Nice looking machine! If you want to learn how to properly grind valve lip angles (yes, supposed to have multiple on each valve) a good channel to watch is: Tatro Machine.

    They sure don't build quality machines like that one anymore! Awesome video! Thanks for sharing!

    Bang up job dude I bet it took a long time to strip and clean all those parts wow ! So sad to see American quality the way we used to make things is now all dead and all them old factory's and the jobs are gone. People had pride and craftsmanship back then. Cant you find a standard grinding wheel for a bench grinder that will fit on the stem cutter if you can mount it on there it will work

    I see quite a lot of restorations like this. A old electrical device, but nobody checks the integrity of the insulation in the windings of these old motors. The enamal coatings on old motors can deteriorate and have a current path to the metal case.

    More (if not some) grease should have been put into all those bearings that looked dry when you both assembled the machine. It would have run so much quieter and will last a lot longer.

    Dig it, damn though your drill press was driving me crazy. All I could think was put a rubber band around the rack at the least. Guess I am just used to using tools that break shortly after such racket is created. Have a great eve.

    Nice Job. Presumably the oil 'hatches' are for lubricating the ways? I would have used shielded bearings in the motors.
