Welcome to another episode of Dancing With The Sea with your host, Paulo. In this tutorial, we uncover the most overlooked but crucial skill to becoming a confident sea kayaker - Blade Awareness.
Ever wonder how expert kayakers seem so at ease and in control, even amidst waves? The secret lies in a simple change in your blade awareness, a skill that could dramatically enhance your sea kayaking prowess. Blade awareness is essentially the ability to know where your paddle blade is, without the need to look at it.
In this video, we cover why blade awareness is so important, how it can impact your bracing, rolling, and overall control in the water. We also discuss the common mistakes beginners make, such as using too much blade angle and not enough full-body movement.
What's more? We share two easy exercises to help you develop and improve your blade awareness. You'll learn how to power your kayak using a sculling motion with your whole body and how to find the optimal angle for maximum support without wasting energy.
If you're looking for calm, efficient, and effortless movement on the water - this video is a must-watch.

This is timely. I have a vacation at a quiet lake coming up so I will have plenty of opportunity to practice.

Blade awareness is a big reason I love traditional paddles; the design makes it natural and easy to know how the paddle is positioned without looking at it. Excellent advice as always.

So true. You can really feel the difference between wrong angle and good angle, so once you get a feel for the blade angle you just never have the wrong angle again.

Ha, ha, suddenly changing the feather angle on a Euro paddle can pose some serious problems. We are creatures of habit.

@@DancingWithTheSea Yes, SO true. And I have come to love my Greenland now, even more than my Aleutian paddle after your lessons and wisdom really helped me to _understand_ that paddle better.

@@iviewthetube HA! Yeeeaaah, and that is something you find out the hard way by trying. I never weathercock Euro paddles as such anymore. But then, I also never _use_ euro paddles anymore unless showing someone new how to get started with paddling.
