- As part of the Thomann DIY Kit Challenge 2022, I'm going to build an SG style guitar kit... but my version of the guitar is going to have a few extra parts from the hardware store, and something else.
Here's the SG kit I'm using (USA Link): www.thomannmusic.com/harley_b...

Hallo mein Freund!
Jawhol
Guten Tag die Damen und Herren! Please do an explorer type body kit. I would love to build one of those!
I can't wait! I got 2 kits, 1 for me and one for my Granddaughter! We are going to have so much fun building these together!
Awesome 😄 enjoy the builds!
Awesome!
I just built my first Harley Benton kit. I basically recreated the Paul allender signature PRS. It's a very nice kit. I upgraded some of the hardware, but everything that came with the kit was decent quality and these kits are a great way for a person to build their dream guitar on a budget. Everything went together well. The wood was great. The neck was great. I hardly had to touch the frets. Great fretwork. Also the purple heart fretboard is really nice. It's right between rosewood and ebony. I recommend these kits to anyone. Very easy to assemble and the end result is great.
This video got me into the contest - ordered my kit immediately and started working on it today so good luck Max and everyone else ✌️
I got so excited when you picked those colors up, can't wait to see the results!!!
I was really impressed the neck came drilled. For someone like me that does a lot for my peace of mind. I hate ruining a perfectly good neck and / or body because of mis-calculations. And of course, Max wouldn't be Max if he wasn't planning on adding his own personal details, accessories, touch, as well as his personality to the build. I can see it all now...Max at a gig and launching rockets with his guitar!!! Love it!!!! Great video, Max. Please keep them coming.
Great stuff Max!
Eagerly awaiting the finished guitar!
Thanks for posting.
Very cool build with the sheet metal top.
I just did my first kit guitar early this year and love it.
Rock on 🤘
I have had my eye on the double neck SG guitar kit from Solo Music Gear. I really love Max's channel. Very wholesome content.
Thnx to you, i'm getting a Harley Benton Custom 2. Your reviews gives me a good idea about what to expect from different guitars.
Awesome! Love the German at the beginning too. Great video!
Kits are killer. I love being able to do piece it all together. 🤘🏼
Yessssss!!! Can't wait to see it! 🪖🚀🎸
Looking forward seeing the results! Good Luck! 😀
yes! I've been waiting for this
Great video Max, been watching you for a few years now, your editing and presentation in front of the camera has come along way. From an old U.S. Navy Photojournalist.
Thank you George!
Can’t wait to see your guitar.
"It even has instructions. Ha! Whatever..." I think I peed a little 😂🤣
I love these kind of videos
Very goos video. Planning on building my own strat in olympic white and maybe a relic
Maxx i hella love this video man I’m buying one of the kits just to creat a special guitar, never built one before and you make this look so fun SO thanks for the video and Inspiration brotha! Love your channel love your style my man
I ordered a 7 string kit from Fretwire. I have yet to put it together, but so far, I'm impressed with the neck and body. It's gorgeous
Just built a Frankie replica. After I purchased Rustoleum enamel paint, read after not to use enamel, supposed to paint a guitar with lacquer. Oops, too late. lol Had zero problems with it. Seems to be holding up. Good luck with the build. Can’t wait to see it!
Awesome!!
I've done three so far. They are inexpensive and fun to do. I did a Jazzmaster, the SG, and the PRS style. If you decide to stain make sure you sand them really well because they come with a sealer on them for paint. If you have some extra good parts like tuners or pickups etc. you can upgrade the kit but they sound pretty good for a kit under $100. Check out the last contest they had there were some awesome builds.
I love the Rocket launching ability...every guitar should have that!
I can't wait to see your results
I bought two over time. One I had burned with a kitchen blow torch then went over with bees wax. All black hardware. Locking tuners. Sounds amazing. And that one I built for my son.
The second one I tried painting it. I went with “plant yellow” again all black hardware. Locking tuners. Paint job was a 7/10 but again sounded awesome.
On both I had to fully insulate with copper tape. And bought some cheap emg style pickups for only £7 each.
Honestly after buffing down the frets, and putting them all together. Probably the best guitars I’ve played. I really want to build more.
Excellent and ambitious build. I think everyone should - at least once in their life - build a kit guitar that preferably also fires a rocket, spews flames or shoots a devastating laser. Can't wait to see the final result!
I put one of these together and I quite like it
extremely sad right now.... left ring finger base of the bone shattered into pieces at work today so no guitar for a while :( i'm glad I can still enjoy your super cool videos. Thank you for your content :)
Get better soon!
My kits comes this week so i can enter from the UK.The Rocket is genius mate 🚀.I love your sense of humour, very British.
Im working on a Pbass kit for my dad from HB. Make sure you sand that sealer off of the wood because it has some sort of insane clear coat that will repel stains. I plan on relicing the pbass and putting our last name on the headstock.
Great tip and great comment!!! Just curious, do you happen to know if that clear coat also causes problems with using a polyurethane clear? If it does I'm interested in if you think that clear coat is something that is applied to protect the wood while the kits are being assembled, as in dirty fingerprints, for example, and is intended to be sanded off before the kit is assembled?
Good luck bro!
@@lostreb Im not sure what the intention is because the wood is very light colored and needs some love to get it looking good. Paint might be able to stick to that clear coat but I wanted to stain the wood and try and make it look a little more beat up (I tooks a blow torch to it a little too)
@@Wurmt0ngue Thank you for the reply. I was curious as to what to expect. If the wood looks really good, I'd lean more to stain or clear poly. If not, that's when I'd look to trying to come up with a nice paint. Thank you again. You absolutely answered my question.
Cool! Didn't know they sell kits! Cool! It seems Harley Benton guitars are great!
We in Australia much prefer Al U Minium! Thanks for the shout out. Oh and while I am on the subject, it is solDer, not sodder!
Been wanting to do this
That's a really cool challenge 😃👍
Who else got in trouble shooting off those Estes rockets back in the day? We would glue the tip with no parachute, and load them with C6-7 motors... the biggest you could get 🚀
Furthermore, I have been playing for over fifty years, Gibson’s, Fender’s, Gretsch’s etc, and I have always been searching for something. I have never been satisfied. It is only now thanks to your channel that I realise that in my quest I have been duped by the big name brands.
All I really wanted all these years, is a guitar that fires rockets. Thank you Max, because of you the scales have dropped from my eyes and I can finally see!
I don't know why but somehow I guessed you'd use satin "military" green. Anyway, can't wait to see how it will turn out.
This looks really ambitious! Imagine the magney field!
It's about time.. lol I have been wondering for a while if you put a kit together what it look like 👍
I was totally expecting a BAMF wallet.
YAARRRGGGG!!!!!!!
It sounds like A great idea, good luck, but I think I will try doing it too..who knows...but I like your Idea...
I'll keep up with ya on this project.
Amazing
If they weren’t so expensive, I’d say to drop a Floyd FRX system right on the top of that guitar… That would be awesome, but at the same time defeat the affordable aspect of the challenge I guess.
This would also negate the affordable aspect of this guitar, but I'd say Sophia over FR any day.
@@BaldPerspective Sophia makes great stuff too, but the Floyd FRX is a top mount system designed specifically to be installed on Gibson style guitars that don't have routing in the body. To use a Sophia, you'd have to route out the body as far as I know.
@@tony_n316 That's what I get for commenting before I watch lol
I have no idea who makes it or if it's licensed, but I have this Yamaha RGX620DX that has a tremolo system I am in love with. It's a single lever release at the head (no tools) and every day when I pick it up I rarely have to tune it, depending on string age. I paid $300 for it used but mint shape, and I'm impressed every day.
naw, cut off the headstock and use a steinberger bridge, make it a headless guitar
I got the JA Kit. This is going to be fun!
Watch your hair with that rocket launching guitar!! Can't wait to see it!
I’m almost 70 yrs young and I’m considering this challenge🎸🎸🎸
Never heard anyone say home dePOT LOL. cool idea with the sheet metel
Kits are the way to go if you want to start building and selling guitars. Warning though, the low cost onslaught of guitars ( good thing ) will hurt your profit margin unless you have an angle like maybe a well know pick up winder making your pick ups.
I ve got the same .SG style .. But smile ... I converted it to a travel guitar two knobbs... And cut it down the size.. Nice small for my car.... Smile...
I wish that pictures could be posted in the comments section because I too recently bought a kit. It's an Ibanez JEM style body (like the one Steve Vai plays but with six strings as opposed to seven). I have painted the body with an acrylic paint and will be applying Tru Oil to the neck and body for the glossy shine. A friend of mine called the color "TARDIS Blue" so I might put a TARDIS decal on the body as well.
very cool
Ausgezeichnet!
As a German I was completely confused at the beginning 😂 I was like: why does he talk German
Anyone else see the point system in his description? Lol I love this dude and the funny things he says. We all start with an A, guys. Let's ace this class, bois and gurls.
A guitar/rocket launcher..Hmmm, sounds pretty cool! Now, will you be able to launch a rocket while playing the guitar? Nope, not a good idea, hot licks then hot launches! Or fiery rockets followed by flaming riffs?? Looking forward to seeing the finished product! Rock on Max!
The end of life by another life. That signal of repertoire to which none shall so ever seek with righteous hands. This, being the word, this being the term, things being snapped and bringing out the gauge, the game and reason for sicknesses to end, and newer problems to be solved. This deep echo is a cerebus, which with many heads conditions the longevity of certitude. And the bastion of elements was regarded as nuance in their name. Very much studious and overtly confident to the name. Devout character being serviced to bring joy to the familiar eyes suggesting their own downfall and grazing the path of least resistance to time's latency. An up and down we all must feed on to taste the contentment.
I've been noting to Gibson they should do a double sided bat wing pickguard, covering left and right side. Maybe with the raised diamonds. It'd be beautiful and so dang metal
I got this. Instead of a B-bender-a rocket blaster! An R-Blaster? Rout a long and wide enough hole and make the rocket launch from the top bout whenever you engage the b-bender pulley from a button on the body or, better yet, the guitar strap. Blast off!
I'm just finishing up a Flying V kit. Too soon for another kit guitar for me. With all the "fun" and mods I did to the V, my wife would have me committed to the nut house if I turned around and started another kit guitar this soon. :) William C.
It would be cool if there were some maple fingerboard options for the other kits.
Max, not to rain on yours, but leave the upper part of the body
with the beautiful grain!, and use the aluminum on the lower half of the body, a split with that grain would be ultra cool. Plus If you have screws on the side your arm is on, you’ll thrash yourself 😳
About time there's some cheap kits
Was going to order BASS, but 13-17 weeks before in stock for one I want..
Sooooo lol it's not called Home De POT lol. Your a funny guy!!!
I'll be amazed if you can cut that aluminum without it looking like a total mess and in a way that won't slice you up when you play. Sounds like you bit off more than you can chew.
I'd glue it down and trim it with a router bit.
Wouldn't know where to start to be honest and surely I would need the proper tools and a workshop
Hi, do you have to pay anything else beside the guitar price and shipping cost to ship to USA from Thomann?
On any kit how are the frets? Can you set a good action without buzz?
I love it when you speak German :)
To quote Carl from aqua teen hunger force: I don’t need instructions to know how to rock!
i miss when you used too open the boxes with those huge swords
Mmmm, cheese-covered guitar... What a great idea Max!
I would really like it if people would say "assemble" and "finish" and not "build". I mean I am not against the practice as it's a great way to get to know the mechanics of a guitar but when you say you build something it should include glueing, routing, selecting the wood, carving the neck, etc. When you skip the hardest step, saying "build" sounds kind of like stolen valor in my opinion. Again, I think the modification and stuff is totally a legit art in itself and I love that shit. It's what got me into building guitars in the first place.
It's building a kit.
Can I use a Non Thomann one? Ive been looking at a BC Rich style one for some time
I gotta know, what is that guitar on your channel banner? Looks like an Ironbird but cooler
Sheet metal, spray paint, and a rocket kit? I was waiting for "April Fools" or something. Alright man let's see what you come up with. I hope you have a righteous set of tools!
Is there a follow up-video???? 🤔
Rocket launcher guitar. Now this I gotta see, what could possibly go wrong. You got this rocket man
Do a stain with EVH stripes.
I need to make my own Nashville Tele 😅😅
I wish Thomen made left handed guitar kits too
I would so love to participate in this contest. BUT! (and that's a big but right there) there is no left-handed kit available from Harley Benton right now. Bummer! Well, since I have been complaining about that on multiple channels I got a message from them promising me that "next time" there will be one available. I hope it's a SG or LP style then. Would also be okay with a tele style.
Great video as always, I saw your video about the Schecter E-1 FR-S and I was wondering how is it today? still, working as usual? had any problems with it?
It's still doing great. No problems.
@@GuitarMAXMusic Thank you(:
Yeah can't wait to see it done! How are you going to cut that sheet metal? Now you're going to get the bug. I much prefer building guitars over buying them. Tons of fun.
I'm also hoping Max will share how cuts the aluminum to size and shape as well as addressing the edges. (Knowing he flies, I'm pretty sure he may have some contacts in the aircraft industry to give him good tips I'm hoping he shares!!!)
How much does the shipping cost for one of these kits..to be shipped to the US ???
Whats the name of the music played at home depot please ?
I didn't see any primer, you need that or the grain sticks out like a badly paint garden fence. I've built 6 kits, had to upgrade hardware on them.
Do they have A mosrite kit?
What is that red guitar with the gold hardware and the crazy inlay over the left shoulder (right side of the screen)? That one is pretty unique. Was there ever a video on that guitar?
ua-cam.com/video/kEdQHY5Iyjc/v-deo.html
Might need more time than that cause I also ate a full time job !
"Moooootheerrrrrrr, do you wanna build a rocket guitar with meeeeeeeeeeee......" Gimmie my five points.
I hope you got out the Bedazzler :)
Put a speaker and pre amp in it
All of Max's videos are dipped in comedic cheese.
I built an Australian sg kit with p90s and I love it. Hope yours turns out good too.
Excellent german pronunciation 😁 Keep up the good work
