I know it's not the topic of this video but seeing a recap on Twilight princess really made me miss the old Zelda formula. I personally think the stories, characters, and dungeon design peaked with Twilight princess. Please please please give us another classic 3D Zelda game Nintendo!

The biggest problem with Tears for the story is simply that it zelda story, not links. Not only that but the fact you can collect any of the memories in order thus spoiling yourself of latter stuff
It gladdens me that we both share the same opinion for the top 3 games in exactly the same order. As for the rest. I personally think that Totk has a better story than Botw since it's an actual story and nothing that already happened.
Great list! My personal favorite story is still the Wind Waker. It usually doesn't matter to me how much stories from other games connect to each other, but the connection to Ocarina of Time and the implications that presents really adds weight to the whole thing. I remember being blown away seeing the stained glass windows of the sages. It also just does a great job with the themes of letting go of the past and making your own future. And that ending still hits hard.
This video really dispels the idea the zelda stories aren't good. There have been some not great ones but overall most of them are beautiful. Even some of the simpler and shorter stories have enough moments to stick with me forever.
One of the first tears I found in TOTK was Mineru mentioning how draconification is forbidden and can't be undone......so, yeah, I knew there and then that Zelda was going to do it 😂😅
Twilight Princess is the best Zelda game to me and Midna is best girl ever in the Legend of Zelda series and Zelda is second but still just as great... I'd love for them to make a classic 3D Zelda game but sadly i don't think we'll ever see a game like that again...
I could honestly see myself putting Breath of the Wild higher, because to me story isn't just plot, it's also setting and, more importantly, characters. The setting is obviously the main reason why BotW was so good, and the characters just have so much depth, especially in the champion's ballad. This is also why I disliked the Tears story more than BotW, the sages just aren't even close to as relatable and intricate as the champions. W video
I think that the story of Totk and BotW are great, but its in the delivery where they drop thr ball. They just aren't as satisfying having most of the story happening in the past through unplayable cut scenes. However, these games aren't putting their focus on their stories, same way The LoZ had a very simple story, mostly told through sources outside the game. I don't think thats a bad thing, and hating the games because theirs stories are weak is so silly to me. Im glad to see you rate totk so high! I enjoy the story itself a lot
I haven't played TOTK yet but I thought the delivery was fine in BOTW. It makes sense for the story to be told in that way because of Link losing his memory. Shame they seem to do them in TOTK.
your channel is so underrated man. keep em coming while the upper few picks definitely resemble mine, I'm not sure how high botw and totk can even score given the interesting bulk of the story in both (!) games takes place in flashbacks. tbh, instead of totk, I'd rather have wanted to play a prequel to botw which takes place 100 years prior also I never really thought of the extent of what you could call the "story" of Majoras Mask, given around 70-80% of the game consists of sidequests and is therefore optional. the thing that makes it so immersive is the world, the setting, the characters, the doomsday scenario and the themes, not necessarily the story, since that gets outshined by the things mentioned before imo.
Great list. Personally I've got Skyward Sword slightly ahead of Wind Waker, and Twilight Princess and Majoras Mask are a 1A 1B situation. Really hoping future games can get back to the quality of storytelling the series had become known for.
Twilight Princess is probably my favorite Zelda game. The story, characters, and soundtrack was really memorable. I remember being really invested with the game in my childhood. It is the game I think of when I think The Legend of Zelda.
It easily had the best companion and supporting cast. Especially with characters like Bo, Ilia, Colin, Telma and her group, and Renado. Even the Yetis in Snowpeak were an absolute treat every visit. Probably the only downside is how Zelda was handled, but you kinda run into a similar situation with A Link Between Worlds as it seems they focus on a different ruler from a different kingdom. So personally, I'm open to how they handled her here.
TOTK’s story would’ve been better if we get to see more of Zelda’s journey in Hyrule’s distant past. After reading parts of the Master Works, I was completely shocked of the revelation of the history of how Hylia entrusted the Sacred Stones to the Zonai and the Age of the Gods. Let alone the mural of Ganondorf. I wish this was included in the actual game. It would’ve help better the story where Zelda is living in the Era of Hyrule’s Founding. Let alone providing characters (like Rauru, Sonia, Mineru, and the Ancient Sages) more screentime. If Nintendo does come to reconsidering their decision after Echoes of Wisdom, would you all agree for a playable Princess Zelda in a Torna-esque DLC Story expansion?
I've been saying since the beginning that this would be the coolest thing, and I'd also put Rauru as an option to be playable. As is I don't think the past story needed that much more coverage since I see it more as a clearer depiction of Metroid Prime-esque lore than a typical Zelda narrative, but having a side campaign detailing the events and allowing them to fit into the present plot would be awesome. Imagine that final battle where you'd have to fight hard to weaken Ganondorf just enough to inflict the sealing blow.

I'll admit I didn't actually watch the whole video, but seeing The Legend of Zelda majora's mask, my all-time favorite make it to number one legitimately surprised me. I know not many people like the idea of having to replay the same 3 days over and over. But honestly you don't have to do everything in one single cycle. That's just a self-imposed challenge. But for me personally, this is my favorite game because it actually got me to think and care for every NPC. plus the replay mechanic of having to do the same 3-day. It means you're free to make it as easier as hard as you want it to be. There are even some challenges even to this day of yet to try. Even after 20 years I did attempt to beat majora Mask while keeping my heart containers down as low as possible where one single hit Would finish me.

TotK and BotW belong way higher. It's so weird to me that people seemingly tend to rate story based on how much it dictates where you need to go at all times. It's also weird how people pretend that the story is all in the past, as if Link isn't literally going from town to town to save the world in the present.
Great video brother!! I can tell you worked really hard on this and you deserve all the recognition and support! Keep up the good work man 👏 I personally think Majora’s Mask has the best story because of how unique everything is. It does a great job of showing and not telling and has a lot of feelings and emotions connected with its story. The three day cycle works really well from a story perspective because each person has their own story to tell and you learn about these peoples lives as each day goes on and you try to bring as much peace as you possibly can to as many people as you possibly can. It will make you think about certain aspects of life and it teaches you that death and suffering is ultimately inevitable. It’s something that all humans go through and we need each other to survive more than we think and the game makes you connect with the characters in a much deeper way. But the harsh reality is that you can’t save everyone. Skull Kid lost his friends and went into the woods and wanted to be alone because he was sad and ended up coming across Majora’s Mask which embodies a spiritual demon that belonged to an ancient tribe. Ultimately taking over his body and turning him evil. The game has a lot to say about time, life, death, suffering, morality, etc… I think it has the most emotional plot out of any Zelda story and I think it’s absolutely brilliant ⚔️ 🛡️ 🙏
Man I really hated the Totk story I’ll be honest! Not only was it very cliche (and let’s be honest a tad cringe), but the way it changed the lore so drastically and changed the characters so badly. No longer is Zelda, link and ganondorf connected in history by the triforce and always destined to meet, now it’s just random princess, random soldier and evil dude who coincidentally meet 🫤 just doesn’t hit the same. And as for tears and ganon turning into a random ass dragon, takes away from ganons chatacter… why? Well the boar form he took was meant to be metaphorical and representative of ganons greed! That’s now completely gone, making this version of ganon so minimal in character. Mid ahh story.
I'm a huge hater of TotK story lol. No amount of justification people make will get me to like it. It's way too inconsistent and lackluster for me to feel anything for any of the characters.
Honestly my top favorites are a toss-up between Majora's Mask, Ocarina of Time and Twilight Princess. But all of the games are beyond amazing and I can't wait to see what the new Zelda game will be like (yes I know there is a new one coming soon)
agreed about tears of the kingdom. also sour about how botw was barely EVER referenced and 90% of characters seem to have forgotten link. but what i will say, is that tears of the kingdom is CARRIED by its characters. genuinely has some of my favorite characters in all of video games.
that said, still one of the best zelda games of all time. the story is SLIGHTLY disappointing but it still chokes me up and leaves me in awe every time. still a near-flawless game.

Excellent video. Very well produced and written. Just out of curiosity. Have you seen Chyde109’s review of Twilight Princess? He’s my favourite creater on Zelda content and he’s absolutely ripping Twilight Princess’s story apart. That’s just his stand on it, obviously, but I kind of giggled when I saw you rank the story of TP this high after watching his video recently. That’s the fun part of rankings though. Different opinions and motivations for them. If you haven’t checked out his review of it I warmly recommend it. Like this video, it’s really well executed.
I really feel that Spirit Tracks deserved to be higher, and am especially disappointed that Byrne went unmentioned, especially since you mentioned both Ralph and Linebeck stepping up in their respective games. Edit: There seems to be some favoritism here. You went into a lot of detail about A Link to the Past's smaller moments for example, but only mentioned the big beats for Spirit Tracks. Nothing about the Tower of Spirits being broken, nothing about seeking the other Lokomos to restore the tracks, nothing about getting the Bow of Light and Compass of Light, and again nothing of Byrne's character arc.
I loathe when people add an unnecessary thesis-esque opening paragraph that has nothing to do with the actual content. “Storytelling is one of the most important parts of being human” Ok? And? What does that have to do with anything? It’s an hour long video you don’t need to pad it with a meaningless opening you’re not getting graded for this.
Totk would've been 2x better if A. The plotline took place shortly after skyward sword as it would make more sense timewise, and b. Zelda was playable in her cutscenes (and they're linear cutscenes)

@@megastarwarsrocks99 idk man, I thought it was both more interesting and a more integral part of the game. The dialogue is extremely repetitive and the sages aren’t as interesting as the champions, but the intro is a better hook, the dragon tear memories were very interesting, and imo it’s up there with Wind Waker for the best ending in the series. I don’t think it was anything remarkable, but I’d still put it above BotW. The top 4 are the only games I’d say actually have great/standout stories.
This list is honestly close to how I'd rank them. Skyward Sword and Wind Waker are my two favorite stories as well. I might bump Four Swords Adventures up one slot, as the story has a little more depth than most credit it for. And I'd probably bring A Link Between Worlds up a few positions too. Twilight Princess I'm mixed on, because it has many undercooked elements to its story and Ganondorf's inclusion wasn't done well (imo)... but Midna's character lifts the story to great heights, hence it's difficult for me to nail down a spot.
@@WindMageMaster the presentation of TP helps it out a lot, and the Ganondorf inclusion has always been conceptually cool enough for me to overlook some issues with execution. And funnily enough, I had FSA a spot higher until I decided to treat both Oracle games as if they had the linked ending.

There are some parts of TP that feel like it’s trying too hard to be epic, like the shot on Eldin Bridge… but then there are things that are genuinely awesome too. And yeah, that’s funny about FSA. Mad props on the placement for TotK’s story at #5 too. I agree. I was over the moon with it, but the repeated sage cutscenes and a few other details keep it out of top 3.
Gotta be honest, I feel I kinda disagree on Spirit Tracks' placement, but maybe that's my nostalgia bias and love for Zelda's characterization talking... I also have to remember what games come after it, which makes it tougher. Still a great story though.
I don't agree with the specifics, and it's impossible to do so for anyone, because we all share different experiences, but I do agree with everything you said for the most part. My biggest disagreement is probably placing ST as low as it is.
I personally think 18th for Four Swords Adventures is too low. Yes, it's tied with Twilight Princess as the franchise's most blatant example of the "hijacked by Ganon" trope, and yes, it's just a retelling of the standard "rescue seven sages, then get to the final dungeon" setup, but there's a lot to like about the game's world-building and atmosphere. But that's just me. I can understand why it ranked so low.
I really want to enjoy Skyward Sword, but I gave up on it because I can't stand those horrible controls (I couldn't even beat Ghirahim 1 in Skyview Temple). But even with the small duration I could not see Zelda's and link's feelings for each other.
I get Majora's Mask story being called a great or even the best story...to an extent. I'm currently replaying the game now. It's great but it's hard to classify it as the best "Legend of Zelda" story. I would have had to penalize it a few spots just for that. Regarding Twilight Princess, I need to go back and play that one. I got it for GameCube when it first came out. It felt like a bit of a rehash of OOT with new graphics and the Twilight dynamic instead of time travel. I played it past the Forest Temple and Kakariko village part but then put it down and never picked it back up.
Man; TLoZ saga is probably my favorite franchise of all time, but let's not touch fanboy territory, 'cause saying Arthur Morgan's story is not anywhere close to The legend of "rescue me from the demon king and save the kingdom" (mostly anyways) sounds just like fandom bait for views. Sure, you like it more and preferences are subjective but not fully, so let's get just a little real here because if we get too real, it's very likely fans wouldn't like to know which story is the one which's not even close.
I can get behind this take. Even my favorite stories like Twilight Princess, Wind Waker, and Links Awakening, while being excellent stories, i dont put up w stories like RDR2, last of us, the Xenoblade games, the Spiderman games, Witcher 3,
I feel like it’s a difficult story to place. I personally really didn’t like it, but at the same time, it’s still quite involved with plenty of very interesting plot points. It’s really hard to say it’s worse than the lower ones on the list because of just how in-depth it is compared to those, but at the same time, the poor execution hurts it a lot. I think personally I would put it just below LttP simply because that is a simple story done incredibly, vs a complex and interesting story done poorly

There's a lot to like about this list. And the franchise. However..... #3... I would have put that underneath #4. The story of #4 is magnefique, and definitely #3 just pales against that. It's a good story, but not as grand. And as for #1, all the different stories in the entire game combined, definitely tops, but the overarching story is not as good. But, it's definitely 1 of my favourite games to learn the stories from. As for OoT, I do feel like with how generic that story was, there were better games to be put above this one. The game itself however, great!
21:09 I have to disagree, ALttP doesn't deserve to be this high, much less above underrated gems like PH or ST. ALttP barely has any story, with most of it being told either at the very beginning (making it too bloated) or at the very end, with no character nor plot development at all. It is also quite generic as well, being your typical "damsel in distress" scenario. It has nothing to do being above actually good stories like PH or ST.
Totk was story wise absolutely terrible, and completely fails as a "sequel". The best thing by far is the presentation and sound design. Zeldas character is 1-dimensional and bad, the fake Zelda Story was repetetive and boring, with an undercooked hyrule castle quest at the end. And don't even get me started on the cutscenes after the dungeons. The ending was percieved as really good by the media (obviously because of the presentation) even though Ganondorf was bad, having zero objectives or motives (but having a good presentation) and Zelda turning back into a human makes no fucking sense and seemed like a huge asspull. The game is like the TikTok of Zelda. It overwhelms you with lots of super-cool features (that mostly have no long lasting "sense" and only served to satisfy the short attention span of the players) and always leads you to new points of interest. It serves to satisfy and overwhelm you in the moment, for which the presenation obviously helps. But do you know why it has such good presentation? Because their fucking budget was bigger that drake's best piece! The result can't be that bad, if you spent a gazillion dollars on it, right? The dragonhead isles is boring as shit when the thunderstorm isn't there, but most people will just ignore the annoying kakariko quest anyway, and just go to the islands with the storm active. The game just doesn't fit nicely. Its all fun and supercool when you just don't think too hard, which 90% of players won't do (which is good enough for nintendo make big money !!) It also just doesn't answer any of the questions of botw, which is what made it so great in the first place. It just creates a load new mysterys that a totk player (that has played the prequel) subconsciously won't care about as much. They had the mysterious typhlo ruins, the imposing labyrinths and the sheika technology. What are the typhlo ruins? Who build the labyrinths? Why does the forgotten temple exist?

TP (kinda generic story and imo one of the weakest points of the game, but still great. The aura during story moments is insane tho) 4. OoT small gap 3. Majora (story isn't THAT special, it's the characters and world that make the game incredible to talk about. The story is over-hyped because so many people have made retrospectives or talked about how special the game is. The story itself is just good, but not the greatest in the series imo) Large Gap 2. Skyward Sword 1. Wind Waker
@@d3va383 We all have the same top 5 but in slightly different orders. I disagree that Majora is overhyped. It’s known for its unique story which correlates with the overworld and characters and the three day cycle works absolutely perfect because each individual has their own story to tell and you learn about their lives and routines as each day progresses. It has the most emotional plot in the entire series because it has a lot of dark and deep feelings connected with its story and it does a great job of showing and not telling. The dialogues between characters are absolutely brilliant and the game has some of the best writing in any video game period. It’s philosophical at the core and deals with certain aspects of life such as morality, suffering, etc.. My top 5 in terms of story would most likely be MM, SS, WW, TP, OOT.
It still has one of the best stories that is much darker and deeper than people realize. Growing up and leaving childhood memories behind is something that we all can relate with because it’s inevitable for all of us. But I do think Majora’s Mask story is more unique. Wind Waker also has my favorite ending besides Link’s Awakening and Skyward Sword.

The intro is boring and drags on for what feels like an eternity, while also not featuring any interesting characters. - The Wolf gimmick doesn't make any sense in terms of story. Zelda and Ganondorf immune to the effect of the Twilight, so Link should be too. But instead, he is "protected" by turning into a wolf form, that's literally worse than simply turning into a spirit like any normal Hylians. There's no downside to being a spirit. That's not even mention - The only good character in the entire game is Midna (whose arc is already over in the first third of the game) and maybe Zant (although he's too big of a disappointment to call him a good character). TP features the worst written version of Princess Zelda (literally just sits around doing nothing) and Ganondorf (hijacks the plot and steals the spotlight of Zant, only to replace an interesting villain with a boring one). Ilia is the worst version of the "childhood friend" in the entire franchise (she's insanely shallow compared to the likes of Saria or Mipha and her story doesn't go anywhere). Telma and her resistance are just glorified tour guides. - The world barely reacts to anything. The Hylians don't even know that there's an invasion going on. Heck, they don't even react to the sudden appearance of a gigantic barrier inside of their capital. - The cutscene direction is pretty bad. Stuff like Link slowly posing for the camera after the King Bulblin battle, instead of immediately rushing to save Colin, who is STILL strapped to an unmanned boar, next to a bottomless pit, is just dumb. Or how Ganondorf needs to dramatically unsheathe his sword again in the final battle, even though he fell off of his horse with the sword in his hand. Or the random neckbreak from Zant that came out of nowhere...not even Aonuma knows the point of that scene. - There's an insane amount of inconsistencies and logical errors. Stuff like the fact that Zant just lets Link and Midna continue to get rid of the Twilight, even though it was shown that he's capable of EASILY dealing with Link, Midna AND a Light Spirit, without even moving. The guy literally knows where they are at all times and he can just teleport to them, so it doesn't make any sort of sense why he doesn't keep doing that. Or how Zelda vanishes after healing Midna, only for her to randomly reappear in the throne room again. Or Midna still staying in her physical form after Zelda takes back her essence in the final battle. Or how Midna was resurrected at the end, with all the Light Spirits floating in front of her...even though being their presence should burn her alive, just like in that Lakebed cutscene. - There are many things that also don't line up with previous entries. Stuff like the existence of ancient light spirits that don't exist in any other game. Or the existence of places like the arbiters grounds and other dungeons. Or the weird way the triforce works at the end, where it just vanishes from Ganon's hand for no reason, without even appearing on Link's hand etc. It's kinda weird to me how people constantly shit on TotK for stuff like this, when lore inconsistencies can be found pretty much everywhere in these games.

For all we know, *this* is exactly why he didn't appear sooner, because he was bussy reviving Zelda. *"Or Midna still staying in her physical form after Zelda takes back her essence in the final battle."* By then Midna didn't require Zelda's essence at all. *"Or how Midna was resurrected at the end, with all the Light Spirits floating in front of her...even though being their presence should burn her alive, just like in that Lakebed cutscene."* They are the Light Spirits, if there's any being that can not only revive her, but also lift the curse and make her impervious to the light, is them. *"There are many things that also don't line up with previous entries."* Because these things didn't matter at all when it came to those stories, so they simply weren't mentioned. *"Or the existence of places like the arbiters grounds and other dungeons."* Simply because we didn't visit those places doesn't meant that they didn't exist, it just means that those places weren't important at all for the story of those games. *"Or the weird way the triforce works at the end, where it just vanishes from Ganon's hand for no reason, without even appearing on Link's hand"* That happened because Ganondorf was beaten (by another Triforce owner), however, Link's mentality didn't fit the Triforce of Power so he couldn't get it. *"when lore inconsistencies can be found pretty much everywhere in these games."* If you nitpick this much, yeah.
Nah, could have been better, and while the flashbacks with the sages are bad and repetitive, the game has a great opening, the dragon tears quest was really good, and the game has the best ending in the series

Great list! My personal favorite story is still the Wind Waker. It usually doesn't matter to me how much stories from other games connect to each other, but the connection to Ocarina of Time and the implications that presents really adds weight to the whole thing. I remember being blown away seeing the stained glass windows of the sages. It also just does a great job with the themes of letting go of the past and making your own future. And that ending still hits hard.

This video really dispels the idea the zelda stories aren't good. There have been some not great ones but overall most of them are beautiful. Even some of the simpler and shorter stories have enough moments to stick with me forever.

I could honestly see myself putting Breath of the Wild higher, because to me story isn't just plot, it's also setting and, more importantly, characters. The setting is obviously the main reason why BotW was so good, and the characters just have so much depth, especially in the champion's ballad. This is also why I disliked the Tears story more than BotW, the sages just aren't even close to as relatable and intricate as the champions. W video

I think that the story of Totk and BotW are great, but its in the delivery where they drop thr ball. They just aren't as satisfying having most of the story happening in the past through unplayable cut scenes. However, these games aren't putting their focus on their stories, same way The LoZ had a very simple story, mostly told through sources outside the game. I don't think thats a bad thing, and hating the games because theirs stories are weak is so silly to me.

also I never really thought of the extent of what you could call the "story" of Majoras Mask, given around 70-80% of the game consists of sidequests and is therefore optional. the thing that makes it so immersive is the world, the setting, the characters, the doomsday scenario and the themes, not necessarily the story, since that gets outshined by the things mentioned before imo.
Great list. Personally I've got Skyward Sword slightly ahead of Wind Waker, and Twilight Princess and Majoras Mask are a 1A 1B situation. Really hoping future games can get back to the quality of storytelling the series had become known for.
Twilight Princess is probably my favorite Zelda game. The story, characters, and soundtrack was really memorable. I remember being really invested with the game in my childhood. It is the game I think of when I think The Legend of Zelda.
It easily had the best companion and supporting cast. Especially with characters like Bo, Ilia, Colin, Telma and her group, and Renado. Even the Yetis in Snowpeak were an absolute treat every visit.
Probably the only downside is how Zelda was handled, but you kinda run into a similar situation with A Link Between Worlds as it seems they focus on a different ruler from a different kingdom. So personally, I'm open to how they handled her here.
TOTK’s story would’ve been better if we get to see more of Zelda’s journey in Hyrule’s distant past.
After reading parts of the Master Works, I was completely shocked of the revelation of the history of how Hylia entrusted the Sacred Stones to the Zonai and the Age of the Gods. Let alone the mural of Ganondorf.
I wish this was included in the actual game. It would’ve help better the story where Zelda is living in the Era of Hyrule’s Founding. Let alone providing characters (like Rauru, Sonia, Mineru, and the Ancient Sages) more screentime.
If Nintendo does come to reconsidering their decision after Echoes of Wisdom, would you all agree for a playable Princess Zelda in a Torna-esque DLC Story expansion?
I've been saying since the beginning that this would be the coolest thing, and I'd also put Rauru as an option to be playable. As is I don't think the past story needed that much more coverage since I see it more as a clearer depiction of Metroid Prime-esque lore than a typical Zelda narrative, but having a side campaign detailing the events and allowing them to fit into the present plot would be awesome. Imagine that final battle where you'd have to fight hard to weaken Ganondorf just enough to inflict the sealing blow.

I'll admit I didn't actually watch the whole video, but seeing The Legend of Zelda majora's mask, my all-time favorite make it to number one legitimately surprised me. I know not many people like the idea of having to replay the same 3 days over and over. But honestly you don't have to do everything in one single cycle. That's just a self-imposed challenge.
But for me personally, this is my favorite game because it actually got me to think and care for every NPC.
plus the replay mechanic of having to do the same 3-day. It means you're free to make it as easier as hard as you want it to be. There are even some challenges even to this day of yet to try. Even after 20 years I did attempt to beat majora Mask while keeping my heart containers down as low as possible where one single hit Would finish me.

TotK and BotW belong way higher. It's so weird to me that people seemingly tend to rate story based on how much it dictates where you need to go at all times. It's also weird how people pretend that the story is all in the past, as if Link isn't literally going from town to town to save the world in the present.

I personally think Majora’s Mask has the best story because of how unique everything is. It does a great job of showing and not telling and has a lot of feelings and emotions connected with its story. The three day cycle works really well from a story perspective because each person has their own story to tell and you learn about these peoples lives as each day goes on and you try to bring as much peace as you possibly can to as many people as you possibly can. It will make you think about certain aspects of life and it teaches you that death and suffering is ultimately inevitable. It’s something that all humans go through and we need each other to survive more than we think and the game makes you connect with the characters in a much deeper way. But the harsh reality is that you can’t save everyone. Skull Kid lost his friends and went into the woods and wanted to be alone because he was sad and ended up coming across Majora’s Mask which embodies a spiritual demon that belonged to an ancient tribe. Ultimately taking over his body and turning him evil. The game has a lot to say about time, life, death, suffering, morality, etc… I think it has the most emotional plot out of any Zelda story and I think it’s absolutely brilliant ⚔️ 🛡️ 🙏
Man I really hated the Totk story I’ll be honest! Not only was it very cliche (and let’s be honest a tad cringe), but the way it changed the lore so drastically and changed the characters so badly. No longer is Zelda, link and ganondorf connected in history by the triforce and always destined to meet, now it’s just random princess, random soldier and evil dude who coincidentally meet 🫤 just doesn’t hit the same. And as for tears and ganon turning into a random ass dragon, takes away from ganons chatacter… why? Well the boar form he took was meant to be metaphorical and representative of ganons greed! That’s now completely gone, making this version of ganon so minimal in character. Mid ahh story.
I'm a huge hater of TotK story lol. No amount of justification people make will get me to like it. It's way too inconsistent and lackluster for me to feel anything for any of the characters.

That’s just his stand on it, obviously, but I kind of giggled when I saw you rank the story of TP this high after watching his video recently. That’s the fun part of rankings though. Different opinions and motivations for them.

I really feel that Spirit Tracks deserved to be higher, and am especially disappointed that Byrne went unmentioned, especially since you mentioned both Ralph and Linebeck stepping up in their respective games.
Edit: There seems to be some favoritism here. You went into a lot of detail about A Link to the Past's smaller moments for example, but only mentioned the big beats for Spirit Tracks. Nothing about the Tower of Spirits being broken, nothing about seeking the other Lokomos to restore the tracks, nothing about getting the Bow of Light and Compass of Light, and again nothing of Byrne's character arc.

The dialogue is extremely repetitive and the sages aren’t as interesting as the champions, but the intro is a better hook, the dragon tear memories were very interesting, and imo it’s up there with Wind Waker for the best ending in the series. I don’t think it was anything remarkable, but I’d still put it above BotW. The top 4 are the only games I’d say actually have great/standout stories.
This list is honestly close to how I'd rank them. Skyward Sword and Wind Waker are my two favorite stories as well. I might bump Four Swords Adventures up one slot, as the story has a little more depth than most credit it for. And I'd probably bring A Link Between Worlds up a few positions too. Twilight Princess I'm mixed on, because it has many undercooked elements to its story and Ganondorf's inclusion wasn't done well (imo)... but Midna's character lifts the story to great heights, hence it's difficult for me to nail down a spot.
@@WindMageMaster the presentation of TP helps it out a lot, and the Ganondorf inclusion has always been conceptually cool enough for me to overlook some issues with execution. And funnily enough, I had FSA a spot higher until I decided to treat both Oracle games as if they had the linked ending.

Gotta be honest, I feel I kinda disagree on Spirit Tracks' placement, but maybe that's my nostalgia bias and love for Zelda's characterization talking... I also have to remember what games come after it, which makes it tougher. Still a great story though.

I personally think 18th for Four Swords Adventures is too low. Yes, it's tied with Twilight Princess as the franchise's most blatant example of the "hijacked by Ganon" trope, and yes, it's just a retelling of the standard "rescue seven sages, then get to the final dungeon" setup, but there's a lot to like about the game's world-building and atmosphere.
But that's just me. I can understand why it ranked so low.

When I first play a link between worlds, I thought Yuga was a woman.
I get Majora's Mask story being called a great or even the best story...to an extent. I'm currently replaying the game now. It's great but it's hard to classify it as the best "Legend of Zelda" story. I would have had to penalize it a few spots just for that.
Regarding Twilight Princess, I need to go back and play that one. I got it for GameCube when it first came out. It felt like a bit of a rehash of OOT with new graphics and the Twilight dynamic instead of time travel. I played it past the Forest Temple and Kakariko village part but then put it down and never picked it back up.

Man; TLoZ saga is probably my favorite franchise of all time, but let's not touch fanboy territory, 'cause saying Arthur Morgan's story is not anywhere close to The legend of "rescue me from the demon king and save the kingdom" (mostly anyways) sounds just like fandom bait for views. Sure, you like it more and preferences are subjective but not fully, so let's get just a little real here because if we get too real, it's very likely fans wouldn't like to know which story is the one which's not even close.

I feel like it’s a difficult story to place. I personally really didn’t like it, but at the same time, it’s still quite involved with plenty of very interesting plot points. It’s really hard to say it’s worse than the lower ones on the list because of just how in-depth it is compared to those, but at the same time, the poor execution hurts it a lot. I think personally I would put it just below LttP simply because that is a simple story done incredibly, vs a complex and interesting story done poorly

There's a lot to like about this list. And the franchise. However.....
#3... I would have put that underneath #4. The story of #4 is magnefique, and definitely #3 just pales against that. It's a good story, but not as grand.
And as for #1, all the different stories in the entire game combined, definitely tops, but the overarching story is not as good. But, it's definitely 1 of my favourite games to learn the stories from.
As for OoT, I do feel like with how generic that story was, there were better games to be put above this one. The game itself however, great!
21:09 I have to disagree, ALttP doesn't deserve to be this high, much less above underrated gems like PH or ST. ALttP barely has any story, with most of it being told either at the very beginning (making it too bloated) or at the very end, with no character nor plot development at all. It is also quite generic as well, being your typical "damsel in distress" scenario. It has nothing to do being above actually good stories like PH or ST.
Totk was story wise absolutely terrible, and completely fails as a "sequel". The best thing by far is the presentation and sound design.
Zeldas character is 1-dimensional and bad, the fake Zelda Story was repetetive and boring, with an undercooked hyrule castle quest at the end. And don't even get me started on the cutscenes after the dungeons. The ending was percieved as really good by the media (obviously because of the presentation) even though Ganondorf was bad, having zero objectives or motives (but having a good presentation) and Zelda turning back into a human makes no fucking sense and seemed like a huge asspull.
The game is like the TikTok of Zelda. It overwhelms you with lots of super-cool features (that mostly have no long lasting "sense" and only served to satisfy the short attention span of the players) and always leads you to new points of interest. It serves to satisfy and overwhelm you in the moment, for which the presenation obviously helps. But do you know why it has such good presentation? Because their fucking budget was bigger that drake's best piece! The result can't be that bad, if you spent a gazillion dollars on it, right?
The dragonhead isles is boring as shit when the thunderstorm isn't there, but most people will just ignore the annoying kakariko quest anyway, and just go to the islands with the storm active.
The game just doesn't fit nicely. Its all fun and supercool when you just don't think too hard, which 90% of players won't do (which is good enough for nintendo make big money !!)
It also just doesn't answer any of the questions of botw, which is what made it so great in the first place. It just creates a load new mysterys that a totk player (that has played the prequel) subconsciously won't care about as much. They had the mysterious typhlo ruins, the imposing labyrinths and the sheika technology.

Why does the forgotten temple exist?

It’s philosophical at the core and deals with certain aspects of life such as morality, suffering, etc..
My top 5 in terms of story would most likely be MM, SS, WW, TP, OOT.

It still has one of the best stories that is much darker and deeper than people realize. Growing up and leaving childhood memories behind is something that we all can relate with because it’s inevitable for all of us. But I do think Majora’s Mask story is more unique. Wind Waker also has my favorite ending besides Link’s Awakening and Skyward Sword.

- Easily the worst opening to any Zelda game. The intro is boring and drags on for what feels like an eternity, while also not featuring any interesting characters.
- The Wolf gimmick doesn't make any sense in terms of story. Zelda and Ganondorf immune to the effect of the Twilight, so Link should be too. But instead, he is "protected" by turning into a wolf form, that's literally worse than simply turning into a spirit like any normal Hylians. There's no downside to being a spirit. That's not even mention
- The only good character in the entire game is Midna (whose arc is already over in the first third of the game) and maybe Zant (although he's too big of a disappointment to call him a good character). TP features the worst written version of Princess Zelda (literally just sits around doing nothing) and Ganondorf (hijacks the plot and steals the spotlight of Zant, only to replace an interesting villain with a boring one). Ilia is the worst version of the "childhood friend" in the entire franchise (she's insanely shallow compared to the likes of Saria or Mipha and her story doesn't go anywhere). Telma and her resistance are just glorified tour guides.
- The world barely reacts to anything. The Hylians don't even know that there's an invasion going on. Heck, they don't even react to the sudden appearance of a gigantic barrier inside of their capital.
- The cutscene direction is pretty bad. Stuff like Link slowly posing for the camera after the King Bulblin battle, instead of immediately rushing to save Colin, who is STILL strapped to an unmanned boar, next to a bottomless pit, is just dumb. Or how Ganondorf needs to dramatically unsheathe his sword again in the final battle, even though he fell off of his horse with the sword in his hand. Or the random neckbreak from Zant that came out of nowhere...not even Aonuma knows the point of that scene.
- There's an insane amount of inconsistencies and logical errors. Stuff like the fact that Zant just lets Link and Midna continue to get rid of the Twilight, even though it was shown that he's capable of EASILY dealing with Link, Midna AND a Light Spirit, without even moving. The guy literally knows where they are at all times and he can just teleport to them, so it doesn't make any sort of sense why he doesn't keep doing that. Or how Zelda vanishes after healing Midna, only for her to randomly reappear in the throne room again. Or Midna still staying in her physical form after Zelda takes back her essence in the final battle. Or how Midna was resurrected at the end, with all the Light Spirits floating in front of her...even though being their presence should burn her alive, just like in that Lakebed cutscene.
- There are many things that also don't line up with previous entries. Stuff like the existence of ancient light spirits that don't exist in any other game. Or the existence of places like the arbiters grounds and other dungeons. Or the weird way the triforce works at the end, where it just vanishes from Ganon's hand for no reason, without even appearing on Link's hand etc. It's kinda weird to me how people constantly shit on TotK for stuff like this, when lore inconsistencies can be found pretty much everywhere in these games.

Thing is that the three of them entered the Twilight in different manners. Zelda sacrificed herself to enter and Ganondorf was sent there, meanwhile Link was badly teleorted there out of his control, he would have become a soul (like all the other characters) if he didn't have the Triforce of Courage.

Ganondorf had enough time to revive her. For all we know, *this* is exactly why he didn't appear sooner, because he was bussy reviving Zelda.

That happened because Ganondorf was beaten (by another Triforce owner), however, Link's mentality didn't fit the Triforce of Power so he couldn't get it.

Totk story was trash.
Nah, could have been better, and while the flashbacks with the sages are bad and repetitive, the game has a great opening, the dragon tears quest was really good, and the game has the best ending in the series

I wouldn’t say trash, but definitely minimalistic. I would really like to see a more dedicated story moving forward, even if it takes away some of the open world.
It just doesn't line up with the timeline. The sages and Ganondorf and everything just don't go with the story ocarina of time laid out
