    Hello, Ignoramus here. The ignorant question of today is, why put battens around the hull to put ribs into so that the battens can be replaced by carvel planking, when you can just put the planking in around the molds and bend the ribs into that?

      Because you need to fasten the planking to the ribs as you go. With clinker(lapstrake) planking where each plank was fastened to the previous plank, it was generally planking first then ribs, same with batten seam carvel planking where each plank was fastened to the batten already fastened to the previous plank. In some parts of the world they dowel carvel planks together and add framing later, but in this boat the planks needed ribs to fasten to.

      @@SmithysBoatshed If the station molds were closer together would that change? I'm guessing that minor misalignments are the problem here that pre-bent ribs solve.

      @@paulbriggs3072 it could work if moulds were closely spaced enough, but there’d be more work in making a whole lot of extra moulds, probably more than the work and materials involved in fitting ribbands.
