Hank’s Toughest Challenge | Lands End John o' Groats Record Attempt

- Опубліковано 3 лип 2021
- Hank and Mark Beaumont are no strangers to epic cycling challenges and breaking world records. But, this time, we set them a challenge that takes things to a whole new level. Cycling from Lands End to John o' Groats in a time trial relay. Riding 1 hour on, 1 hour off, full gas for almost 2 full days is enough to bring anyone to their knees; even the kings of pain themselves. Would they be able to complete this truly epic ride?

Is this the most epic challenge Hank & Mark have ever undertaken together? Have you ever ridden LEJOG? Let us know in the comments below!
Use need to put a GCN team in Australia. Dream job
This was brilliant. Just hearing Hank, he sounded just about dead. What a stunning pace to maintain over such a distance. Why not do something like 3 hours on, 3 off? Wouldn’t that give you more rest, or is that not allowed?
By far your best challenge. Just a herculean effort!
I would love to see a bike touring version of this. A Tour of the 🇬🇧 (TOUK) would be neat with mandatory pub stops.
GCN, I would like to request a video if you can do it “How to properly ride out of the saddle on a mountain bike” I really want to know if I am doing something wrong when getting out of the saddle with my Mountain bike Thnx.
This is a UA-cam video - and it's free. The production quality is insane. Props to everyone involved 👏
Thanks, Joe!
It's technically not free. You pay for it by either spending time watching ads, or spending money on UA-cam premium.
@@Wargwarn I pay £0 to watch it. Therefore it is free to me. The advertisers pay UA-cam - of which a portion goes to GCN which is how they make their money. I however am watching it for free.
@@joewallace7552 time is money, hence the phrase 'spending time'. You spend time watching ads, therefore it's not free, unless of course you value your time at £0.
@@Wargwarn That's a superficial view on things from my perspective. Yes, I need time to make money which I need to buy food to survive. But not every second of my day has a financial equivalent. When I'm sitting at home in the evening and I watch a video that's 30 seconds longer (because of the ad) than I expected, I didn't spend money. I couldn't have made money from those 30 seconds in any realistic way in my life. To be honest I didn't even spend the 30 seconds watching the ad. I just think about something about which I didn't have thought had I been working (for money) that time. Your statement that "you value your time at £0" just because you consider watching an ad plus a video free (of charge, which it is) is too big of a conclusion.
Another series of "Let's kill Hank again"
Love it.
He just keeps getting back up again...
Poor guy looks like he was in serious pain at the end there. What a trooper.
@@TheGerm24 He's not nicknamed The Tank for nothing
You can't kill Hank the Tank!
Hank is the first subject of every experinent.
I like how Mark sounds more or less exactly the same at the end as he did at the start, where as Hank sounds like a totally broken man lol. Epic effort guys, a great bit of film.
This is basically just a training ride for Mark considering what he's done.
Little blow off the cob webs on his legs kind!
Ya Mark sounded like he had just set off on his first turn every turn 😂 dude is just a beast. And for hank to last showed some serious balls for someone who isnt use to this. Experience is everything.
These are familiar waters for mark. It was his first long range cycling ride when he was 12 and got a taste for the ultra endurance. He did look like a Tim Burton character at the end though.
If you watch the 1903 Tour de France stage they did together though you'll see they both look like they aged 10 years at the end.
Yeah Mark's mental toughness is something to behold, love it!
Chapeau. I did JOGLE with a pal when I was 18 years old in 12 days in the mid-90s. On MTBs. With no helmets. We just slept in bushes, in fields (woke up several times with cows sniffing my head), on beaches, and on the last night on a central reservation roundabout next to a helicopter airport. Oh, how times have changed! We realised three-quarters of the way through Scotland that out guidebook was taking us to local points of interest like churches and stone circles. Needless to say our route ended up being 1660km. Loved it though!
90s full rigid MTBs are awesome. Basically like a touring bike with beefier tires.
When a Mark Beaumont, world record holder for the circumference of the world is along side you, you'd be daft to not take his advice on an endurance event. Mark you are a bloody legend mate ✊✊✊
He's a true master of his craft.
@@gcn I love how he barely seems to be breaking a sweat.
@@Songbirdstress I think he's just spent so many hours of his life in that pain zone he's used to it now haha
@@EcclestoN00 he is scottish ! its in the DNA.
TRUE WORDS BRO💯💥💥💥💪💪💪
„When you’ve got no idea what’s going on, carry on.“ That’s worth a T-Shirt, isn’t it?
Copy that
I thougtht that too
I loved the sympathetic shrug after he said it - like he wasn't on the bike for 11hours prior. Legend.
@@TheGrapefruit11 Beaumont is just a beast!
Liked that. I just use Dory's line from Finding Nemo "Just keep swimming"
A video about the recovery after these challenges would be interesting.
Yes, I'd very interested to see what they recommend, especially the nutrtionist/physio as I fuel well on rides but then often get a little sick after big efforts (nothing of this magnitude of course) because I don't refuel and recover well. I am assuming Hank didn't just go straight to bed....
straight down the pub getting the early beers in, pushing on and smashing a vindaloo after closing time, is the recommended course of action for maximal gains
I was in Lands End when you were setting up your bikes. I remember telling my girlfriend this has to be for an epic challenge otherwise no ones just starts a ride in Lands End for no particular reason. What a ride
Amazing effort fellas! Thrilling watch!
Ed commenting on GCN now that's a beautiful thing
Ed ❤️
Hello Ed, perhaps you could try this on your unicycle 👌
Hello Ed hope your well 👍🏼
So when are we going to see a relay race style on the Uni-cycle then?
Bloody hell! Even the entire team must be utterly exhausted from this effort with little sleep and looking after Mark and Hank! Well done, everyone!!
It was a huge team effort behind the scenes! We're super proud of everyone involved. Hope you enjoyed the film!
Unbelievable achievement! I’ve not averaged 34km/h on my two hour local rides in Surrey and you guys did that over the entire trip!! I think this will inspire countless GCN fans to get out on their bikes and see what they’re capable of. Well done both!
The evening before I started walking Lands End to John O'Groats a few years ago, I shared a hostel room in Penzance with a cyclist who planned to do the same on a bike, a tough looking fellow. He said he'll do it in six days, which sounded crazy to me. It eventually took me about twelve weeks to get to the other end. Admittedly it's a bit longer on trails, closer to 2,000 km.
And for the next one:
Can Hank do this on a broken saddle?
Let's be serious. These Hank and Mark challenges are incredible videos! And it is awesome to see what these two athletes are capable of. Thanks GCN for supporting this kind of content. Go Hank! And go Mark! Amazing effort!
@@davidgfisher Thats just how you tend to sit when you are on tri bars for longer time. Your body automaticly tries to put you straight above the pedals as you get more power out this way. The UCI rules for time trials state that the saddle needs to be 5cm behind that axle thats why most bikes are set up this way, although this is not the most efficient position to be in hence you move forward on the saddle.
Do it with no saddle.....
Does Hank get a raise every time he does a crazy challenge? This guys is something else
My thoughts exactly!😄
Hank is getting more and more impressive as time goes on. He’s definitely climbing up to my top favorite GCN presenter
Amazing! Mark looked like he was ready to turn round and cycle back 😂
Yes incredible 😅
Aye but lookit yon map - it's aw doonhill goin back!
Mark looked tired right off the bike and a few moments later, when talking to the camera, he is looking fresh already :)
He just thrives off suffering!
we need a tech section on the food and drink and rest and recovery during.
100%
Yes please. That would be super helpful for a beginner endurance rider!
I want this as well!
a cynic in me thinks this will be on the gcn plus version of this.
Yes please!! 👍🏻🤪
Just imagine the action behind the scenes... we need GCN behind-the-scenes vids.
why tf do people give a dislike?? This is just incredible
55 Jeremy Clarksons out there so far 😂🤣
IKR! 2 solidly decent blokes push themselves past their limits to achieve something incredible and some bitter little farts hit the dislike button?!
I mean, it's like a third of a percent of the likes. I would have thought more people would mistakenly hit the dislike when trying to click on the like.
@@nroose I'd love to believe that only 0.33% of people were knobheads. 😁
fat lads in vans, or 'cyclists' with p1ss weak legs
Hank "I was going to puke. I don't feel very well." Stumbles away from bike looking at Strava to see how many KOMs he just took! 🤣 Well done Hank and Mark! 💪👍🍺
When Hank only manages to speak one word at the time. No more energy for sentences. Epic.
This video should have millions of views. Such an EPIC challenge!
At the time I gave this a thumbs up there were 37 people who gave it a thumbs down. I cannot understand how someone can look at the efforts these fellows made and not applaud their work. It was an amazing trip. Congrats to Mark and Hank.
record is unfare in principle, despite the effort the whole team put
Should have started in Scotland, would have been downhill the whole way.
Did you not watch the video of them going to Scotland? It was downhill the whole way.
(Just kidding of course! I go to Scotland almost once a year; it's beautiful.)
Downhill but they would have had a headwind the whole way.
Total respect. I did JOGLE in May this year, unsupported in 8 days. Had some massive lows, tears which needed daily morale boosting phone calls to the Mrs and some amazing highs. Can't say I enjoyed it much, but definitely pleased I did it, after years of thinking about it. Feels good to know I did it solo too.
Martin I’m planning to do it in 7 days unsupported in June next year. Booked the annual leave. Be great to get some tips :)
Wow incredible effort guys, well done! I just completed my LEJOG ride yesterday. 1006 miles pedalled solo, approximately 88 hours riding spread over 16 days. Not the fastest but that was never the point. I am proud to say I did the whole distance without cheating i.e. hopping on a bus, taxi etc. Still, can't imagine how anyone could do this in one sitting - it is a hell of a long way! Looks like you had near perfect conditions. I had a headwind all the way to Newcastle (yeah from Lands End!) A couple of similarities I found noted from this video: time in the saddle feels like an eternity until you step off, roadblocks / road closures occur more frequently than you'd think, and it is amazing how when things are going bad, they remarkably, suddenly get better.
"Hank’s Toughest Challenge" - title of every 1 out of 10 GCN videos :-D
Man keeps one-upping himself, so it makes sense! lol
Congratulations on another epic challenge! It's an honor to be part of the crew to help you make it to the finish. Happy trails out there 🍑 ✌️
Love videos like this one! Great job GCN!
So amazing! Such an interesting and well put together watch
Wow, that was an epic ride, guys! And production quality is through the roof, too.
Thanks very much! That means a lot!
@@gcn I'd love to see that kind of stories uploaded to YT in 4k. It will surely give justice to the boys who did such an awesome ride
Finally the film that I’ve been waiting for. Respect to all the GCN team and Hank especially. 🙌🏼
Cheers, Thanasis!
Epic ride, epic editing loved it! 👍
This was great!! Really inspiring ☺️
Mark looks like he could turn around and ride back!!
Seriously impressive!
Just finished my second LEJOG a couple of weeks ago - it was the support team and fellow riders that make it achievable, the route planning that shows the scenery off to its max (no dual carriageways), and a bit of training that makes it physically possible to complete and enjoy. The route was over 1,600km but it also took a lot longer than 40 hours. A lot longer. Thoroughly recommend it to anyone who is thinking about it - don't put it on your bucket list, put it on your 'I will definitely do this within 12 months' list.
I’m planning on doing it over tbis summer but I’m really struggling with finding accommodation for an affordable price and even if we were to camp a lot of the campsites are fully booked so it is not looking great
Congratulations!
Is there a website? How much does the event cost and what kind of support do you get?
@@joseville I travelled with a company called Peak Tours. Would highly recommend, the costs and support levels are all on their web site.
@@DD-qq8sn thanks!
@@samradcliff8817 we just turned up at campsites and they managed to squeeze us in. Was in non Covid times though

I love these types of vids gcn! Keep it up!!
I saw these two with their routes on strava, was wondering what insane ride was planned
The secret's out! We're so proud of them for completing such a tough challenge!
Epic
44 km after the first shift (48 min) in a 39h ride - just a typical Hank's thing
Just amazing guys. Kudos. Looking forward to seeing more.
that was amazing to watch, thanks for the video and congratulations!
Credit to the GCN editing team for the night scenes. They felt so much like overnight randonneuring.
you can see the grit in their faces at the end. wow
Truly brutal!
Epic stuff, a joy to watch, well done to all involved. Awesome!
Amazing team effort, inspirational!
I watched the first 5 minutes of this on my phone.
I restarted the video from the very beginning on my PC with proper audio and screen because you guys have absolutely nailed the production. It made me get out of bed and watch it properly.
As for Hank. He's a monster. Mark Beaumont is absolutely phenomenal.
Love from India.
Wow this is the best video I've seen on this channel!
Thanks very much! Glad you enjoy the film!
I love their vintage bike tour de France stage too.. well worth a watch!
This is a great video with stellar content combined with beautiful editing. It got me excited and wanting more to root them on! Brutal stuff but carryon, Hank and Mark!
Great video! Thanks for everyone in your team's effort!
Do you guys just have editorial meetings where they sit around and think "how can we torture Hank this time?"
Hank status:
☐ Broken
☑ Still unbroken
Gotta try even harder, GCN!
We're running out of ideas! How can we break him?!
@@gcn Turn around an go back... but seriously, that was a hell of an effort.
@@gcn well there is that ultra endurance race across Europe...
@@gcn When we're all travelling again... One I've seen done once before by a group of good amateur riders. Melbourne Cricket Ground to Adelaide Oval - as close to the coast as possible - 4 riders , 3 sunrises. All riding, not relay style. No support. Start the as the dawn is coming up on the end of 48 hours-ish. Almost exactly 1000km. Sights include the MCG, The Great Ocean Road, the Otway Ranges, Warnambool (end of the worlds second oldest continually held bike race, the Melbourne to Warnambool), the forest country of Western Victoria, Mount Gambier, The Limestone Coast (loads of wind!), The Coorong, Lakes Albert and Alexandrina (more wind!), the Adelaide Hills then the drop into Adelaide. A proper lads & ladies weekend away really!

Got to say Wow to Mark and Hank, congrats lads 👏💪

Superb. It’s such a shame that the absolute best content on GCN involves so much human suffering.
Glad you enjoyed it, Chris!

The video is a real work of art. Mark and Hank’s effort is the most inspirational thing I’ve seen in a while.
Many congratulations, it is such a hard ride. Just loved your sporty socks and shoes! Atko
Amazing work guys! Well done 👏
That is probably my favourite video guys! Incredible effort and congratulations on an epic journey and time
Just starting to watch, already loving it!
Hope you enjoy the film, David! Thanks for watching!
The effect is so much faster in a 30 minute video, of course. But watching Hank and Mark fall apart mentally and physically as the ride goes on is really gripping viewing. It's joyous and wonderful watching what humans can do sometimes.
Great job, everyone! So inspiring!
just beyond awesome, absolutley brilliant effort by all, congratulations !!!!
That was amazing! I actually got emotional when Hank and Mark hugged at the end of the ride. Wow!
Absolutely brilliant by Hank, Mark and the team(who also didn't get much sleep and rest). Considering you had all the gadgets to keep track of data like watts, calories etc. it would be great to do a follow up video analysing the data of what it actually did to your bodies and how you coped. Keep up the great work!
Amazing effort, every inspiring to watch

Awesome to hear! That's why we do what we do. Thanks for the support!
Great job, guys!!! Congrats to all of you!
Amazing effort!! Smashed it
Honestly the way the embraced each other at the end was pretty emotional. What an achievement. Congrats guys.
I'm thinking that we need to rename "Hank" as "Tank", as nothing stops him.
Absolutely amazing effort and great to watch
Motivating & incredibly inspiring. Great work to all involved, awesome viewing
Epic 🙌🙌
Isn't it?!
This is beyond compare especially for Hank, you need to have an extraordinary strength both mentally and physically to be able to conquer or withstand this challenge. Kudos for Hank and Mark and the rest of the team. It makes me want to cycle even further and be stronger!
Stunning, utterly stunning! 👊🏼
Love how these two work together. All their videos are a pleasure to watch.
Thanks for doing something so inspiring at a time when many of us need to know that not all is lost. A marvellous effort from riders and crew!
