Hi Chris, thanks for the vlog. Great to see stretches of river that I've never been to. As far as the net goes; I have two positions. One on my back when I'm walking along the beat and the other, where it is hung off a strap that goes over my right shoulder and under my left armpit. I attach the net via magnet and the secure chord to this. I am right handed, so release the net and hold it with my left hand, only when I'm sure the fish is ready. Like you I've found no definitive right way but this is the best for me. Good luck.
Greay video again Chris. I have a magnet on my net that is held on by a cable tie i find it holds the net higher on my back. The net with a strap I find always slips round and tangles with the rod. When netting a fish by yourself you need to get it upstream of you then let it drop back into the net although i havent had much practice netting a fish recently 😂. I see you worked out how to get Theo in the net lol.
Hi chris, I put the shaft through a loop on the top of my bag and hang it down the front of it by folding the net over. The front if the bag being furthest from your back. Keep going anyway you've inspired me and I've fished the dee the ayr and s esk and I'm back on the dee we'd 25th I think it is next week at tilbouries due to you and thanks so much I'm loving it! Haven't caught a salmon but it's brilliant doing it so who cares?? Love it!
Hi Fraser thank you so much for your kind words they have made my day!. I am niw using a folding triangle boot next is extendable and clips to my right hip on the wading belt. Much easier to use and safer than that pain the arse net. I think you stand a very good chance at Tilbouries if the water levels are right. When fishing on my own I tend to leave the net at the bottom of the pool and, if the banks permit, walk the fish down to the net when I'm playing it. Unfortunately, netting fish effectively is all about practice, something we don't get enough of these days! Tightlines, I hope you connect with a fish soon.

Your best fishing the Focherbers beats just as there is a very high spring tide. This brings many fish in and they can run the river. you can get the tide table from the local newsagents I would think. But the big tides are the best, I would think.
On the CJ's Reel Adventures channel there is a video called Salmon on the Fly at Cargill. The Gye net is strapped onto the fishers back but is released well ahead of landing and hangs down stream due to the flow. The knack is to bring the fish upstream then turn it down into the net. You can see the video of that at around 6:30 into the runtime. I don't think there is a wrong and a right. Many times I've been thankful for the net especially if its a big fish. Other times its a hinderance especially when deep wading as it can act like a sail and push you. The downside with beaching is you have to play the fish practically to total exhaustion and you can scrape its eyes/skin when it gets beached. Its also tempting to beach before the fish is really ready and that can lead to disaster. No reason why you can have the net ready and make a judgement call as you play the fish on which method is best - even though you have a net you don't need to use it. Hope that helps.
You can usually beach or grass a salmon and walk round behind it to unhook and release obviating the need for a net entirely. And I agree they are a bloody nuisance. A wading staff us far more important particularly if the pool is rough going.
I always carry a net, essential kit. A slung gye net isn't useful and never use those. The best salmon net I ever had was a Sharpes Tay 24 inch folding net. It clipped onto the D loop on the back of the wading jacket between the shoulders. Completely hands free and never bothered me when flyfishing. When required it was easily deployed with a simple flick to open the net and land the fish. I recently emailed Sharpes to reintroduce this large model salmon net and they are looking into it. Suggest everyone email sales at Sharpes of Aberdeen and request a 24inch Sharpes Tay folding net. Best net, you won't go wrong with it
@@CornishChrisTheFish you're welcome Chris. In terms of technique when hooked on a salmon play it as normal until you see it tire. Pick your spot to land the fish, either from the bank or wading. Then shorten the line by winding in so that you have the fish nearby. Plant the butt of the rod into you hip and hold the rod above the reel with one hand. Then remove the folding net from behind your back with the other hand and flick it open. Draw the fish over the submerged net with the rod hand, lift and the fish is yours. The reason I never use a gye net is that it is far too awkward. After getting the net off over your head, avoiding hat and sunglasses, you then have to extend the handle using one hand, your foot, while still playing the fish, and possibly wading which is less than ideal and can result in you falling in

@@CornishChrisTheFish yes Chris I noticed the inflatable life jacket in the video and certainly would not put you off wearing it. I sometimes use one also depending where I am fishing and the conditions. The type you had was a "harness" shape with belt which should allow for access to the D loop at the back if using a folding net. The net will hang below the collar of the life vest and should fit neatly. I do recommend the Sharpes Tay 24 inch folding for many reasons which I wont go into here. But suffice to say it has proven its value over many years and is the best I have seen having tried several folders. Please enquire with Sharpes on the availability of the Tay net. Good luck with it and tight lines!!

Do not carry a net on places where you can easily beach a fish. You where in a beautiful place, I would go there more frequently if I where you. Which I d live there, and fish the whole season.

Your best fishing the Focherbers beats just as there is a very high spring tide. This brings many fish in and they can run the river. you can get the tide table from the local newsagents I would think. But the big tides are the best, I would think.

Try using a bungie as this will pull the net tight to your back thus stopping it from moving when you cast

I hate gye nets for that reason. I have a normal short handed net on a magnetic clip clipped below my collar.
