  • Rolls-Royce is easily one of the most respected names in automotive history, and with models like this Silver Spirit 2 hitting modern markets for a fraction of their original prices, the temptation of owning such driving royalty is palpable.
But with massive potential for hidden costs, are these legendary cars worth the risk of buying on the used market? Let's review the Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit 2 and find out...

I'm in my mid sixties and have been a Rolls Royce driver for more than 40 years. I've owned a Silver Cloud III for 39 years, as the second owner. I drive it most days and was advised that every pound spent on petrol saves five pounds in maintenance. They like being used.

I'd say that a classic Rolls Royce is infinitely superior to anything in the current Rolls Royce range. They look like bricks filled with over complicated electronics and silly things like the starlight roof. They certainly aren't made with the traditional Rolls Royce buyers in mind. I have owned a 1965 Silver Cloud III for 38 years. It is regularly serviced and properly maintained. I drive it most days, it starts first time and I have only had one major problem with it, a new cylinder head gasket. Yes, they are expensive to maintain, but I don't think they are as expensive as say the new Phantom. Any good mechanic can deal with it. My advice would be to buy one that has had one, possibly two owners. I think the problems start when they are bought by someone who can afford the purchase price but not the maintenance, so things are done as cheaply as possible. Properly cared for they just keep going. I'm 64 and don't suppose I will have another car.

      Hello!
Thank you for your comment. I’m just behind you in age, (I’m 61) & I’m currently considering the purchase of a 1965 RR Cloud III like yours!! It’s a two owner since new motor car & has a full service history with it & has only travelled 106,000 miles since new. I’m so tempted to purchase it but am half terrified about maintenance costs & reliability! Having read that you’ve owned your lovely lady for 38 years seems to indicate your love & dedication to these spectacular & PROPER Rolls Royces!! Is there anything in particular you’d recommend I should look out for in this model?? Thank you for your time & may you continue to enjoy your beautiful Rolls!! 🙏

They get to 10 years old, sometimes less fir the 1 series and they're JUNK with multiple stupid issues. The amount of low quality plastics in the engine parts are ASTOUNDING not to mention the ALUMINIUM HEAD VOLTS which break off inside the block and then blow the head gasketsoon after. Only $11,000 to fix the BOLTS ALONE.

Decent summary of the pros and cons of owning such a vehicle. You are absolutely right about the steering and braking.. I bought a 1990 Bentley Turbo R for £8k a year ago, have loved driving it for a year trouble free, 13-15 mpg, starts first time. The driving experience is unique, bewitching, relaxing, fast, serene. Nothing else on the road goes like it or feels like it. It is a rolling statement of intent fulfilled. For this addiction you have to pay, handsomely. It now needs £25k to replace the gas suspension, fix the engine oil leaks, replace the brakes, fix the electric seats, new aircon, fix central locking, replace the exhaust, refurb the wheels, fit a decent period stereo and speakers and service. Should I sell it, probably. Will I keep it and have the work done, definitely.

If an electric computer module goes out you will not be able to find a replacement so the car could be undriveable. You might find someone who could rebuild the old unit if you are lucky. Computer modules don’t last 30 years. Even 20 in some cases.

This is the first video of yours I have watched - I love the 80s and 90s Rolls Royce's and Bentleys - your review is raw honesty which I appreciate, as most videos focus on the beauty with little mention of the negatives or downsides. I do feel classic cars are appealing to more people in their 30s and 40s who want something different with soul and character.

I've owned two "Proper Motor Cars", a 1975 Silver Shadow and a 1988 Silver Spur and loved both of them. The best advice I received from a fellow RR Club member: "You may be buying a 20-thousand dollars used car, but remember you are servicing a 150-thousand dollar car!" Proper service is extremely expensive, something any prospective owner must keep in mind. If you are prepared for the service costs you will love your car, if not you will be looking to sell it as soon as possible. Oh, and don't buy the cheapest you can find, buy the most expensive you can afford because the cheap ones will come with lots of pre-existing problems while the expensive ones, with service records, have usually been well maintained and will last many tens of thousands of miles.

Great video and v accurate commentary. I owned an '82 Spirit for 11 yrs and recently traded it in on a '94 Spirit III. - 2 very different cars to drive! - Both a delight and in 2021, admirers are a plenty! A couple of well known adages from here in the land of Oz -
    * If you can't afford a new RR, then you can't afford a 2nd hand classic one either.
    * You might not need deep pockets to buy a classic RR, but you'll need them to maintain one.
    * These cars need to travel at least 20 miles every 20 days - they are not meant to be on display shelves.
    * If you can afford a RR, then the cost of fuel is incidental.
    * If it doesn't leak oil, it's not an English classic.
In my opinion, classic English cars are a delight, with RRs at the top of the tree.

Thank you for informative video. Good introduction for those who are thinking of "doing it".
Upgrading the brakes to all-disc brakes [11:20] was done already in 1965 on the Silver Shadow so if this Silver Spirit II has drum rear brakes, someone has been very naughty. The front discs have two calipers each, the rear single calipers each.
On both my TurboRL I find the brakes are not as featherlight to operate as I'd like but they do stop the car very well even if driven at speed and with gusto if the system is properly maintained and the car frequently used.
The best way to own these cars is to use them frequently. Sitting still in a garage is usually why they start leaking and the minor and major niggles appear.
One piece of advice: "There is nothing as expensive as a buying a cheap Bentley/Rolls-Royce".
The ones priced at GBP7,000-8,000 are usually many-owner cars where each owner could afford to buy the car and drive it but not service and maintain it properly. Avoid these. Buy the best one you can afford (preferably from a club member) and, as stated in the video, keep a buffer for potential unexpected repairs. And remember: there is no depreciation left to worry about. Ergo, the depreciation costs can be reallocated to the fuel account. I've never regretted buying my first car - a Bentley - 22 years ago and once you've tried one of these Crewe cars, you will probably like it too. They are addictive.

Had my 1990 Silver Spur II in the shop for various R & M. biggest (and costliest), I had to have the heater core replaced. A couple of the hydraulic cylinders had to be replaced.
Did a tuneup, oil change, and transmission service. The last three items were maintenance items and not too expensive.
Now, I just need the recovery container for the engine coolant. The plastic cracked.
The items I replaced were items that infrequently break. Those items get replaced every 30 years. My Rolls is 31 years old.
The interior looks very good. The seats and headliner was redone and look brand new.
I’m sure I’ll find other things to do with Elizabeth (my Rolls).

I have been looking at them for a while now, will buy one after my new garage is finished (the other 7000 square foot building is stuffed). Good point with the retrofit idea, had not thought of that. I have heard these are expensive to repair which, I assume is why you can buy them here in the States for reasonable money. I am leaning towards a Shadow II from the late seventies. I have a Spur, the stretched version of this one, and at nearly 40 years old, it's by a margin the best new or used car I have ever owned and the best 'seven large' I ever spent.
My first ever super lux car, let alone a Royce though I had a supercharged Merc before this.
All the viewing height of a modern SUV, at 6ft tall.it has all the space I need with headroom to spare and then some.
Compare with spending 3 or 4 times as much on a "normal brand" new car, let alone an awful BEV, it's no contest, not even close. And I bought it with a 50% buffer which I haven't needed, not yet anyhow, and still have that to spare.
Nice and simple, drives like what it is, a gorgeous drive, restful, comfortable, power "sufficient" but be aware it's not far short of 3tons kerb weight so you have to think ahead for braking. But any good driver does that anyhow, it's no penance. Think of it like the Transits and sub-HGV rigids I used to drive, think ahead.
Yes I've spent less than a handful of £hundred in a year and a half (including the suspension spheres) but no more than my 20 year old daily use car has cost me. If I had to lose one of my cars the Royce will not leave my driveway.
If you can find a good one (maybe at auction?) I'd recommend it just for the sheer joy of following the winged lady down the road.
Just don't spend all your brass on the car (even a Royce) keep a decent slug in reserve just in case.

As long as you can do your own work. These cars have a high maintenance braking system that has license from the French company citron. It is extremely temperamental and complicated. The braking system and self leveling system are one. The main brake pumps are located inside the engine running off the camshaft. If some reason the pumps fail the entire top of the engine must be taken off to repair the pumps and it will cost thousands to do so.
If you have the budget to have a professionally maintained go for it otherwise stay away from this car at all costs!!!! I speak from experience I used to have a silver shadow.

    • @paulrchapman1

Again if you do your own work that’s fine , And I’m sorry I don’t agree you do need to dismantle part of the engine on the top to get to the brake pumps.. furthermore taking it to a specialist as when they RR badge will be charge anywhere from $200 to 300 per hour. A complete overhaul of the system eight to $10,000. As mentioned I speak from experience. I went to many many different shops all with the same outcome. The transmission and the engine are wonderful but that braking system is the Achilles’ heel of the car.. like I said if you do your own work OK but the average guy simply cannot afford to maintain this cars!

    • @paulrchapman1
      @paulrchapman1 3 роки тому +2

Thanks for posting this, but the description of the pumps being inside the engine is surely inaccurate. They are removable from the top ( with a little more disassembly needed for the one nearer the windscreen)
The system is similar to the Citroën arrangement and as we know, RR bought the rights to use it.
I have had DS and ID Citroëns for over 50 years, as well as more recently my Silver Spirit.
The vast experience these companies have with high pressure hydraulics, especially with LHM as opposed to the brake fluid or RR 363 ( which is hydroscopic and corrosive if in contact with paintwork) practically guarantees reliability in the braking and suspension systems. I have had no trouble whatsoever with brake component failure with either make of car.
I don’t believe that they are the Achilles heel, though perhaps Shadows experience more problems than their green fluid successors.
It is interesting to me how we differ so much in our opinions on the same subject!

It's not to most RR fans' taste, but I would strongly recommend looking into some of the classic American equivalents of the time, in particular the Lincoln Continental. I've had a 1968 model for a couple of years now and it was so far ahead of anything we had in terms of build, comfort and certainly road presence. Plus prices are far lower, both to buy and live with.
Plus I now also have a Mk1 1973 Silver Shadow which is being heavily modified for a project and even that only ran 10 mpg compared to the American's 12. For people who care about the badge more than anything it won't win you over, but for those who care more about what the car can actually do, Cadillacs and Lincolns from the 50s-70s in particular are very hard to outclass in the luxury segment.
My own '68 being a prime example, disc brakes on the front as standard, unibody design like Rolls-Royce also uses, full six seatbelts and electric seats and windows from the factory, auto dipping headlights, and the aforementioned fuel use despite being nearly a litre larger than the Shadow and with 120 bhp more. Its also around 10 inches wider, almost two feet longer and still weighs about the same as the Rolls. We often joke about Yank motors, but before the fuel crisis of the 70's they really were leading the world. And I only paid 10k for mine. (Review of both of my Lincolns are here on the channel too in Beards 'n Cars, magnificent machines)
