I have two pet coturnix quails and they are the sweetest little creatures. I couldn't imagine them living in battery cages like this and I'm so glad I was able to save them from such a horrible life.

These are salad bar item in restaurants although you might consume them at the main course. They are to be served boiled and peeled off. There used to be a myth these eggs were afrodisíac, again a myth. They are a great compliment just as mushrooms on one’s salad. The great thing about these eggs is that you do not need to grow them as schlock chicken farms with antibiotics and hormones , so they are supposed to be a healthy snack.

the birds don't necessarily need sunlight if they are raised in buildings, there are many lights that mimic the light waves for daylight that have the correct spectrums etc etc. Think of a grow bulb for plants that don't get enough sun, its the same thing for the birds. To lay eggs the lights must be provided with 14 to 16 hours of daylight otherwise the birds wont lay.
i raise quail(not nearly as many as here) and they have a hell of a lot more space than this and outdoors! they have huge pens with just a few in each one! have about 50 total but not all in the same area!

I just got 18 button quails and coturnix and they grow fast.i made a big house for them in my greenhouse with lots toys and clean dirt for them to dust bath.i see all those birds in a small cages just eat,poop and lay eggs,nothing more

I own a poultry farm. We will be starting quail soon, but our birds will NEVER be kept in battery cages. Period. While this system may be more 'economical' and 'easier' that doesn't make it right.

I still have a jar of the egg shells I blew the liquid egg out of. eventually I gave all their freedom. they probably died prematurely because of our cold winters but they had a good life. PS there poop is great fertilizer.
They probably huddled together under some porch somewhere. Starving and bleeding from hawk attacks. Praying for the good old days when they lived well-fed in a safe cage.
I don't know how much you know about these quail, but I released them in early fall so that they could get some flight time before winter, one day I was driving to work and I saw one fly across the road by the river, they are good flyers and the brown ones have good camouflage but they are quail that are raised for their eggs but mostly for their meat and whether I eat them or an animal eats them, makes no difference, every body has to eat I released them in early fall so they could develop the oils they need to protect themselves the elements, I kept them in a tent outside for a few days. a person I new bought a bunch of them from someone and released them in a field and went out the next day to hunt them and he could not find one bird. they are experts at concealment. enjoy.
