It suited the makers of TV light entertainment, for whatever unfathomable reasons, to have the performers mime. You seem to have shifted your ground, though. In your original comment you claimed, without qualification, that it was the "[b]iggest mistake these old pop stars made", but now you seem to be saying that redemption was possible as long as they could "pull it off".
