After one verse I said the same thing. The only other singer his age still hitting the notes is Colin Blundstone the singer for the Zombies. These guys are special.
Absolutely brilliantly mad!! I saw them on American Bandstand in the 70's and was instantly a fan. So original and iconic. Watching Ron roll his eyes and look annoyed at Russell's prancing was and still is priceless.
OMG, Me too. After Dick Clark introduced them, I was thinking, what the fuck is this! It was a musical epiphany!!! Huge fan ever since. There is a video of them playing California Jam and they pan out into the audience and there is this girl just standing there all bugeyed with her mouth hanging open like a grouper. That's how I felt watching ABS that Saturday morning 🤣
Wow, I can't believe what great shape Russel''s voice is in! Everyone else I can think of in his age/peer group who sings has a couple of backup vocalists to hit the high notes and smooth over the rough spots; Russel is doing it alone and doing it well. Really well.
The guy on the keyboard hasn't aged a bit! Amazing vocals still sound just as I remember them when this came out, I was 17 and had just started work. Happy Days.
This is one of those songs that just startles you..when I first heard it back in 70s I just couldnt imagine who were their influences as it is brilliantly original and fantastically performed song...and his voice is still amazing..I'm really impressed..and Ron's expressions are still cracking me up! What an original talent they are
Love the way they snuck in one of their new songs to stealthily promote the new album! That transition into “Edith Piaf” and then back to “This Town” was flawless!
Love this! The singing is superb Russell still has it and Ronald is hilarious. Love the Piaf lyrics. Saw them in FFS - magnificent. One of the great underrated bands.
Hey there SPARKS fans ... Just came across this video while scrolling thru You Tube trying to find something else and i can't believe it's been now 5 years since this video was put out by the BBC - One Show and as like all the comments have said , how amazing Russel's voice sounds after some 40 plus years ! 😃👍😀 Been a Huge Fan of this group from the first time i ever heard their music back in the 70's when was at WTH school here in Cleveland , Ohio and i've been hooked on them ever since ... 😉 Even went to see them in concert each time that they came to Cleveland to see them put on a Great Show and man What a Show each time ... Unbelievable and Unforgettable the Great performance that they would exhibit each time ... 👍What i like the most from this video and others that i've come across via You Tube ( and MTV back in it's heyday ) are those Funny facial expressions that Russel's brother Ron would make while playing his keyboard ... 😆 LOL so hard and even though his Hitler looking hair style is still the same in this video and the mustache that was much Thicker way back when is now thinner , those facial expressions are still there Great and make me smile still ! 😀 Also , the guys in the band who are in this video are most obviously not the original members from the one's who played with the brothers back in the band's Glory Days , but they still do a Fanstastic job 👍 and if you did not know that they were Not the original members from way back when the group first started out , you sure as Hell can't tell the difference in the sound ... 👍What a Great Job they do and if the band is able to go back on the road again once this Pandemic eases up , i sure hope that they're a part of the touring that occurrs ( GOD willing that the brothers are in Good Health to do so ) and also i hope that the group comes to the home of the Rock - N - Roll Hall of Fame Museum , My lifelong hometown of Cleveland , Ohio ... 😉 P. S. ~ Go Browns !
Go Russelll!!!! This song came out a lifetime ago and it still slaps hard as the kids way. The Mael brothers must absolutely love this to do it this long and well.
Crazy, I remember listening to this at the age of six, I'd had my tonsils out and had to stay in hospital, I'm 53 now, I will always associate this song with that memory.
I feel so bad that I only discovered the Sparks from a Faith No More collaboration of this track. I am glad I found them, though. Just wish it had been so much sooner.
I came here after reading the film "Annette" will open Cannes this year. It is a very quirky, probably hard to figure out musical starring Adam Driver and Marion Cotillard, with music by SPARKS! (They are in it, as well, though I don't know how much of the film they are in, since what I saw was just the opening number.) "Annette" promises to be a definite "experience", especially for fans of Adam Driver and Sparks!
I LOVED these guys back when this song was huge in England, we were all so young😍I worked in a record store in Syracuse and played them non stop, fast forward, I have not stopped loving them. SPARKS forever
Fantastic performance and wow Russell still has the high tones in his voice at his age!!! And Ron is of course still the star of the show with his straight conservative image and stiff rigidness and his facial expressions, how can you not focus on him in any Sparks video lol.
This video, and this alone, should be enough to enshrine Sparks into the RR Hall of Fame.
amazing 43 years later he can still sing this in the original key
It is astonishing
No kidding Russel s a great singer for sure!
I know. Blows me away..
After one verse I said the same thing. The only other singer his age still hitting the notes is Colin Blundstone the singer for the Zombies. These guys are special.
@Santino - if that's his regimen more people should follow it.
Ron... still the coolest man on the planet in his 70s. Follow your own path, always!
Quirky, original and absolutely brilliant. Ron is still as eccentric as ever and Russell can still hit the high notes. Awesome.
Theatrical not quirky
@
I’ll accept theatrical instead of quirky. Still awesome!
Absolutely brilliantly mad!! I saw them on American Bandstand in the 70's and was instantly a fan. So original and iconic. Watching Ron roll his eyes and look annoyed at Russell's prancing was and still is priceless.
I saw that as well. Been hooked ever since.

Ron Mael is just so unbelievably cool 👌🏼
In 44 years time, these guys will still be 44 years ahead of their time...
Wow, I can't believe what great shape Russel''s voice is in! Everyone else I can think of in his age/peer group who sings has a couple of backup vocalists to hit the high notes and smooth over the rough spots; Russel is doing it alone and doing it well. Really well.
yes he sounds fantastic hard to believe he's in his late 60s! :D
I even feel he hit the high notes better than when he was young
Never had to key down this song, remarkable imo.
Russell was born October 5th 1948.
Ron on August 12th 1945.
Do your own math! 😉
Ozzy Osbourne
Rob Halford
Brian Johnson
They're his age or older and they do not need backing singers.
Ron has more talent in the look of his eyes then any so called singers/bands have in todays music! What a band!
Forty- Seven years on was ready to smuggly laugh. I stand corrected. This was an amazing performance 👏
Impossible not to smile when watching this awesome performance. Sparks rule!
a great great performance and dont forget, this band is on stage since Sweet, Slade & T Rex.
Even pre Queen
Absolutely staggering.. I'm speechless.. This came out when I was 8.. and still sounds epic.
Same here, played this over & over again in 74..😀
His voice hasn't changed since the 70's. Amazing. I'm lucky enough to have seen them twice in Mancester, no one sounds like Sparks.
What an original talent they are
The question of “who were their influences” is a good one but with no clear answer.
i mean, really, its timeless. this song will still be good in another 40 years
Also big credit to the band, they really played it well!
Yeah.. Awesome band here..!! 🤘😊
a pair of true legends
Love the way they snuck in one of their new songs to stealthily promote the new album! That transition into “Edith Piaf” and then back to “This Town” was flawless!
Amazing .... he still sings it so well ! Russell's voice is up there with the likes of Claus Nomi.
What a badass time to grow up! Skipping school and driving down to our favorite surf spot in Mexico listen to this genre full of music masterpieces!
Most people like Sparks for their music - I go to their gigs for the pure entertainment of Rons facial expressions 🤩👍
I like the odd facial expression
One of my all-time favs tracks.
Not only were most of the audience not born when this song was first preformed - but also most of the backing musicians weren't born either!
These two dudes are still as fresh as the day they came out. Rock on Russ and Ron!
Indeed! No wonder Abba's Benny and Bjorn are among their admirers!
magic, still got it lads. I met them in a record shop in L.A in the 80's, great memory x
Nearly impossible to perform this track live than the same as in studio ..They are heroes .
1974-2017. Amazing performance 43 years later.
Never sounds old that song amazing 👏
omg that mixed in Edith Piaf bit was a welcome surprise
Unbelievable, what a performance, God bless you boys, you have brought so much pleasure to so many ,much love and respect 🙏 ❤
Love this! The singing is superb Russell still has it and Ronald is hilarious. Love the Piaf lyrics. Saw them in FFS - magnificent. One of the great underrated bands.
They must have found the fountain of youth. Amazing voice.
since the first listen, every sparks song is like a journey through time into my past, wonderful!
I feared they were gonna 'sing and play' to a recording. But wow, LIVE. Amazing performance.

Love Sparks. Their new album is excellent.
Just brilliant in the 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s, 10s, 20s and hopefully 30s!
Talking about entering a time machine and coming back 40 years later unchanged. Brilliant
Probably the most original act ever. These guys can spin off pop music melodies with a twist of hard rock like no one else for he last five decades.
Brilliance
Wow, I watched the original promo from 74, then this. Amazing!
Utterly brilliant
was 14 when this came out and remember it as being so different . Amazing how has stayed the distance
Superb. Still as fresh as it was when I was a teenager in the 70s
He's absolutely brilliant, love you both Sparkes Xx
Go Russelll!!!! This song came out a lifetime ago and it still slaps hard as the kids way.
The Mael brothers must absolutely love this to do it this long and well.

Outstanding, as brilliant as ever
That was brilliant.... they continue to remain pure class....
Gorgeous!
I'm gonna stick my neck out and say that's one of the greatest songs in the history of popular music.
I’m going to stick mine out with you!
The version with Sparks + Faith no More is just great
Yes
Crazy, I remember listening to this at the age of six, I'd had my tonsils out and had to stay in hospital, I'm 53 now, I will always associate this song with that memory.
Amazing music.
Yes, they are both legends. I think they are really extremely talented too. I adore this track Thanks One Show and the brothers too.❤️💯💯%
Gilvray Bengio I think it’s BBC one

Fantastic...and love the 'Edith Piaf' add on part way through.
Man style 2 burn in every direction! Their sound! Their look! Their power! Love SparkS!!!
Ron could not stop him self smiling as he knows good music when he hears it !
I feel so bad that I only discovered the Sparks from a Faith No More collaboration of this track. I am glad I found them, though. Just wish it had been so much sooner.
