You're right. It really had the vibe of an exciting, virtual world, and not "just" a game and a gameworld. Everything you did was something brand new. 8:56 I'm proud to say I am part of that 2%. We managed to down 4 bosses in naxx. we got the instructor, Anoob as we called him, Grand Widow Faerlina and Maexxna. I don't remember we killed any other, I dont think we did, but I'm proud of what we achieved, we were a semi-casual guild that tried going a bit hardcore towards the end of vanilla.
Same thing! Was on US-Hyjal during that time and we made it to Patchwerk which was our guild breaker. Guild broke up after many squabbles and fights around Patchwerk. I ended up stopping and returning during TBC and haven't stopped since. Vanilla to the end of TBC was a magical time for me of exploration, the unknown, and just having fun. Wotlk, while I loved it, was the immediate change I saw of something different...META rotations and clear as fast as possible. However, still love the game!
Good video but it's not true that we didn't flask back then. I played in Dark Ritual, an EU guild on Stormreaver. We finished vanilla 8 or 9 bosses down in Naxx and let me tell you, we flasked every raid, for the whole raid. I think we even flasked in AQ on farm raids to clear them more quickly.

Nice to see a well made video showing the behind the scenes. I will say though Naxx definitely wasn't the first Race to World First as I and many other gamers were already burned out by Naxx after the way Blizzard had handled previous races(C'Thun hotfix was the ultimate letdown). And not to nitpick too hard but the term World First extends before C'Thun as my original Nefarian Screenshots used the name (and I do remember being aware of our rankings beyond our server for our prog in Molten Core).
Loving this series. And while I didn't raid back then (and only sporadically throughout my playing and always very casually) I did hear about what it took. This is what people don't understand. The times are different between 2006 (or even 2009) and now. We have SO MANY guides - gear guides, stat guides, class guides, boss fight strats, videos, analysis and SO MANY TOOLS (such as addons) along with YEARS of knowledge - some of which probably have become SUCH common knowledge that we take it for granted.. When people go into Classic and say "THAT'S IT?? THIS is what all the fuss was about? It's not EVEN HARD!!" The collective knowledge has increased SO MUCH, the raids might as well have been done by babies back in 2006, compared to what we have now.
entire video felt like some kind of insider investigative documentary from the 80's, i like it! and it brings back memories of meeting a ret paladin named scorponok in IF on bunring blade EU in full T2.5 and Ashkandi, the awe and reverence and drooling of seeing a ret paladin back then that was allowed to raid was a rare sight(how do i know that, i was a paladin back then and played ret outside of raids but was not allowed to raid as one even with proving i could outdps more than half the raid team because the spec was looked at with disgust)
2006-2010 was just the best time in wow not like now with all the sweaty min maxing and professional guilds who get paid to play full time , with bosses now doing insane mechanics
Really great to see this! Thank you. I was playing at this time but as you said it was hard to follow this high end stuff. I’m not even sure I knew high level raids were even happening because also as you said there was so much other content that I was keeping myself busy with
Can't wait for your next video which will probably be over a month from now! Great to see you really sticking to your guns and uploading often on UA-cam again, just like you have said 3 times Mike!
Amazing video guys. I already know almost all of this history, but was still nailed to my seat watching. Also...Mike with his best Linus impression for the sponsor segment is crisp AF!
I was class officer and raid officer in a Naxxramas raid guild in vanilla, although I personally didn't lead our Naxx raids but ZG, BWL and similar tier stuff. The amount of effort and dedication it took to herd 40 people through all the prerequisite raids and gearing and then herding them through Naxxramas itself burned me out on the game. It was insane how much effort it took to coordinate, as officers we literally raided 5 hours a day 7 days a week and that is pure raid time, not setup, farming mats, potions, buffs, etc. The non-officer guild members could take some days off at least, like when we were gearing new members in BWL or farming TF/Sulf mats in MC, but officers basically always had to be there. It was both a unique experience that I will always treasure, and it was the reason I never wanted to play competitive MMOs ever again after vanilla WoW. We were seen as legendary players by others on the server and the camaraderie between the top guilds was amazing, but the effort was draining, especially since we kept it up all the way through vanilla to get there. Prior to playing my WoW time I also played tournaments and competitive level in the original Counter Strike and while that was intense it was nothing compared to the sheer scale of 40 man raiding at that level. Anyway I burned out, quit for all of Burning Crusade, came back to clear Wrath at a casual level because I loved Ulduar so much and wanted to go through it, after Wrath I never raided again and I left WoW behind. All that said, I was in a "normal" Naxx level raid guild, IE one that could get server firsts, but we were no where near the level of the world first guilds, even we looked in awe at the stuff those guys pulled, we completed our stuff based on their work, without it we would have been nothing as we never built strats from the ground up or explored mechanics in that detail, we just built a well oiled machine for carrying out those strats the absolute madmen at the top of the top guilds created and published.
I had no idea when my guild was raiding Naxx in 2006 I was one of very few players who even got an opportunity to kill any bosses in that raid. I was on a weird little RPPVE server called Scarlet Crusade in a guild called Dark Heaven. We certainly didn’t clear the raid, but I have great memories of those days. And it turned out to be a significant achievement for a 40 year old mom who was convinced to try WoW by her son in 2005. Fun times. ❤
I remember my mate telling me about the launch of Naxaramus and the attacks on the cities. I started like 3 months before TBC launched so I missed all the fun. (Saw the attacks when Wotlk launched though)
Great vid- One of my classmates in high school was in DnT along with his dad. Had no idea they got screwed this badly later on in Naxx! Exciting times for wow and gaming in general
I don't really comment on UA-cam videos, but this one was really freakin good. I enjoyed learning and hearing about it all and I'm glad you and the team are back on these
I remember when my buddy had this happen to him as a big raid tank and got snagged up. The guild he talked about getting him to change guild had him as a "trial" person and watched them dis enchant gear other new tanks could still use.
So much memories coming back whilst running around an as an overpowered tier-1 shaman 8 piece did the work in healing in naxx. Amazing content preach, keep it up - love it!
as someone who was raiding naxx back then and our guild cleared everything but thad before we started falling apart due to lack of motivation before BC, this story really really hit. I remember those struggles, i remember trying to get inside scoops. our first week in, we spent farming trash for boe's, raz and anub. after that we did faerlina, cleared noth and heigan. then we got maexxna, patch, and grob. it was a super exciting few months. we managed to clear 4 horsemen even, just because we had made friends from quite a few guilds and kept progressing long after many guilds had stopped just because they decided to wait for BC so their tanks joined us. after that, thad just ate us alive, we could never quite get him, lots of 10% wipes, but just could never find the groove
Loved this series. Cant wait to see more. Think it was amazing you were able to chat with the some of the old D&T members. I remember spamming F5 for any scrap of info you could find about how the guilds were doing.
There were also accusations on Heigan from D&T against the Kilrogg guild Conquest. Stating that Conquest kept healers outside of Heigan's room yet were able to heal without having to safety dance. Now it could have just been forum trolling or misinformation but on almost every boss there were accusations flying on the forums. What a time to be a raider. I miss those guys. I dont miss the game though. I miss the relationships forged in those late night raids to just get 1% more.
Limited options for footage, most of the first kills videos don't exist anymore. Also the point was the whole raid wouldn't flask. Some players would if needed
The guild on the server I was on was a transfer from another server and they got everybody that was in other guild’s that was super geared basically at one point anyone with a thunderfury was in the guild.

This should be aired on the History channel
Such an awesome video once again. The Preach vanilla stuff just hits different. Amazing content!
That was amazing to watch I’m looking forward to more behind the scenes stuff for raids in bc :)
1:03 and I knew this episode was going to be a banger. Why is the Emperor is a tank? The Emperor protects.
This is fantastic can't wait for the TBC video!
These recent 2 videos (all i've watched so far) are absolutely insane quality dude. You're smashing it!
This was a great video. Wish you were still gaming in WoW but I understand. Right now is a really good time btw
Loved the video!!! I would love to see more of this type of content :)
Fun times. ❤
Crazy series! You've outdone yourself preach!
What an enjoyable series! Welcome back to the feed fella
I enjoyed learning and hearing about it all and I'm glad you and the team are back on these
Such a cool piece of gaming history I had no idea about awesome vid!
This was so well done and nostalgic! Thanks Preach, wonderful video!
Amazing Video! I love these legacy type Videos.
I remember when my buddy had this happen to him as a big raid tank and got snagged up. The guild he talked about getting him to change guild had him as a "trial" person and watched them dis enchant gear other new tanks could still use.
Phenomenal video. Can't wait for next.
So much memories coming back whilst running around an as an overpowered tier-1 shaman 8 piece did the work in healing in naxx. Amazing content preach, keep it up - love it!
I love this. Nice, more of this type of retro-y stuff pleeeeaaase!
as someone who was raiding naxx back then and our guild cleared everything but thad before we started falling apart due to lack of motivation before BC, this story really really hit.
This is supreme content! Absolutely fantastic. Thank you.
I love this kinda format. Great video.
This... THIS is the type of Preach-content I absolutely love. Well done Mike. I thoroughly enjoyed this.
Loved this series. Cant wait to see more. Think it was amazing you were able to chat with the some of the old D&T members. I remember spamming F5 for any scrap of info you could find about how the guilds were doing.
I loved the Unsolved Mysteries reference! Well done!
I miss the relationships forged in those late night raids to just get 1% more.
im really impressed how much info Prech dug up from almost 20 years ago
Loving this, feels like old school Preach :D
Great video! cant wait for more documentary style videos from the Team.
Today its kinda crazy to think that all the top guilds back then was Horde
13:35 We can see a flask of the titans in the upper left
Limited options for footage, most of the first kills videos don't exist anymore. Also the point was the whole raid wouldn't flask. Some players would if needed
The guild on the server I was on was a transfer from another server and they got everybody that was in other guild’s that was super geared basically at one point anyone with a thunderfury was in the guild.
