There's always a handful of people who get upset when I make these posts because they think I'm discouraging people from doing cardio.
At the end of the day I'm just giving the facts and people can do with that information whatever they want.
I always include the fact that I still recommend performing regular cardio of some kind for general health purposes, and I'm in no way trying to encourage anyone to skip it. (I'm literally writing this after having just finished a session)
However, there are a ton of people whose primary goal is to lose body fat and who end up on the wrong path by trying to create their deficit through actively burning calories with exercise and then only loosely monitoring their diet, when they'd usually be much better off to flip these priorities around.
Yes, there are always exceptions, and if someone's energy expenditure is very high (this is usually the case for people who have some kind of active daily hobby or do frequent sports/martial arts etc.) and their diet is reasonable to begin with then it might still work out just fine.
I'm speaking to the majority here, and most people are not performing such a high volume of cardio that it's going to have a massive impact on things.
Not to mention that if building/maintaining muscle is a top priority, you ideally wouldn't want to be doing tons and tons of cardio anyway since beyond a certain point it will start interfering with weight training recovery and performance.
Do your cardio. But if the goal is fat loss, controlling calorie intake will be the most important factor for the majority.

Good luck sticking to your diet once you've lost weight and still have less muscle to increase your bmr.
@@lukejs3182 That's when you switch to muscle building. When you have that last stubborn bit of lower belly fat, switch to body building and heavy weights.
I'd add that the missing part in a lot of fat loss programs is that gaining muscle mass increases the number of calories your body requires. I found putting on muscle made losing weight so much easier because I didn't need to go on an extreme diet because my body is naturally burning more calories just for maintenance of the extra muscle I gained.
This- agreed
So, basically, what you saying, is that if I train to gain muscle and lose fat at once, I just need eat a moderate amount of food, a good amount of protein and it all will be good?
@@lalilola3770 if you are not at a plateau with your muscle gain then yes that's a valid plan
@@lalilola3770 Yes - but once you get to large amounts of muscle mass or very low body fat percentages it becomes much harder to continue gaining muscle mass on a cut. That’s why people shift to lifting at maintenance or bulk by eating in excess followed by cuts.
So keep working on leaning down as long as you can, but if your progress in strength or muscle mass gains slows you’ll have to reassess whether you want to keep at a deficit to lose more
weight or increase your calories to help muscle growth.
Its true but I think you and many others vastly over estimate how much calories muscles expend. A pound of muscle mass will not even burn 10 calories to maintain itself. So realistically even if you spend your whole life lifting and put on like 50 pounds it will at most increase your maintenance by 400-450. Now mind you that is not a small amount by any means but you are not getting any significant deficit in the short term. More so what helped you is just the calories expenditure from going to the gym and working out and being just more active in general which also will improve your quality of life and increase your neat. And the small expenditures add up.
Most people are taking this advice wrongly. Sean is NOT saying "DON'T DO CARDIO.", he is just saying "A GOOD DIET is more important for weight loss."
Somebody will take it as “dont do cardio” 😂

Cardio isn’t overrated when it comes to preventing cardiovascular disease. Lack of cardio creates stiff arteries. I like that I can get through a high intensity workout without getting blown up.
You're missing the point. A lot of people think that if they just did a little bit more cardio, then they'd lose weighf. Then they're dissapointed when it doesn't work out that way. Not true, in fact thats one of the benefits of cardio, it allows you to eat more and thus have a more sustainable diet.
@@yedoru4448 my statement is literally true run the math on it. Cardio is a great tool in your fitness toolkit but it is not a primary mover of fat loss. If you really were doing such a volume of cardio that it would allow you (or potentially require you to) eat meaningful additional calories you arent going to have much time/energy to lift. So if you want to invest one or more hours seven days a week to allow you to intake like 500 more calories I dont see that as making much sense.

I started doing both. Cardio game is stronger now, used to be at 66 BPM at rest now I’m at 52 and 40 sleeping. Cardio helps in my eyes and makes me motivated.
I just do it to improve my cardiovascular strength... I used to work out and still feel weak in the heart .. So, I started cardio and it has been really beneficial for me.
I’ve had trainers sometimes tell me not to do cardio altogether… Here’s what I have to say about that:
1. I enjoy walking/running (I know, I’m insane). So, if you’re doing cardio because you enjoy it, don’t let anyone stop you. Videos like this are definitely targeted more at people doing cardio for fat loss.
2. Stop doing cardio before a workout. 5 mins of walking/running on the treadmill won’t kill you. But I’ve had relative, friends, and clients who think that it’s just as helpful/effective to do the cardio training before HIIT and/or weight/resistance training. It just makes you exhausted and doesn’t burn that many calories. So, if you’re doing it coupled with other exercises for fat loss, do those first. You can do the cardio after.
From what I have understood cardio doesn't help muscle building especially hard cardio.
If i do cardio first my lifting isn’t as good, and if I do lifting first my cardio isn’t as good. So it depends on your goals.
A lot of bodybuilder guys with naturally good genetics dont need cardio. I gotta at least do some. Also depends on your job. When I worked construction I didn’t need cardio

This is so true, I tried going to the gym and working out and eating normally, didn't actually lose much weight, and eventually quit.
When I started again, over a month ago, I tried lessening my calorie intake by a few hundred and just doing the recommended 10k steps a day (usually try for 12k, though, just to push myself) and I've lost about 8 pounds since.
Next step, including other body exercises (recently got weights).
I stopped running and did stairmasters and keto diet lost 50 lb
It's just like they say: "can't outrun a bad diet"
You cannot outlift a bad diet either. Lifting weights is NOT any better than cardio.
Swimming is a great alternative to normal cardio. It doesn’t wear down the joints and you can work out your entire body.
You can just swim just for cardio and it’ll help burn calories as well as provide some resistance to muscles.
If you swim competitively it’ll be like a HIIT workout and a resistance workout added on.
Competitive swimmers don’t just “swim” throughout their entire practice time, rather, they have multiple sets that includes warming up, drills, targeted sets such as using fins to strengthen legs and kicking or pull buoy and paddles to strengthen the arms and pulling. In addition to that, there’s the main set that is normally the most intensive part of the workout, and often works like a HIIT workout where you have to put in a very high effort and swim in specific intervals where it’s quite common to only have seconds of rest.
I strongly suggest swimming as a great alternative to normal cardio if people want to try it out or are simply unsatisfied/don’t like running and stuff.
Swimming didn’t do anything for burning fat for me. I swam through out high school for the team and in college. Only until I dieted did I ever lose weight. Swimmer hunger is real and the sport doesn’t get you shredded
I had the same issue until I started Keto. Until then after swim, hunger made me eat anything and I did not lose much weight
Once in keto though, you do not use carbs for energy. Your body uses your fat stores and the after swim hunger is very light.
I now use resistance training (x3 a week) and swimming (x2 a week). It works wonders

i disagree, i’ve been doing 12k steps a day for a month with a diet consisting of 2000 calories (nothing changed) and i lost 5kg
I’m about 2 months into my weight loss journey, I like to do cardio, usually after every session I will do 15-30 mins of mixture of incline and hiit treadmill stuff. But most of all it’s nice to just go for a good 1 hour walk, headphones on audiobook, good for body and brain 👍
I think being a fatty too, when you start losing weight and increasing fitness you start to unlock things you could never do before so even taking a walk on the beach is new for me and I love the feeling of getting fitter every week, even in 2 months you can see real progress with fitness level.
I was a 265lb kid. You’ve got the right idea, that’s exactly what I tell people do for losing weight. Find a form of cardio that’s comfortable for you and a form of entertainment that holds your focus best. Then push the intensity just enough so it isn’t uncomfortable where time goes by super slow.
There is also a specific study that talks about how when you perform high intensity cardio your body fuels itself from stored glycogen.
However, when you perform low intensity cardio like walking, it pulls energy from fat storage.
Walking is a really great way to increase your caloric deficit without making you ravenously hungry like running will.

Walks are good for my mental health, and I listen to books while I do it. It’s also something I can fit in every day. Cardio is not something I do to burn calories, I do it because it brings up my work capacity, it makes me feel fitter and it’s great for my physical health.
People don't realize cardio is what we are best at as humans. We literally evolved to chase prey for long periods of time. We are very efficient at it so it's not great as a fat loss tool. Building muscle that burns more energy and more importantly eating healthy are the best tools hands down.
I get it but by this logic you can say lifting weights is overrated for fat loss too…. If you don’t have a good diet. Comparing an exercise to nutrition isn’t really solid advice. You can’t out lift a bad diet either.
Adding cardio makes it super easy for me to loose weight over time.
2-3 45-75' cardio sessions a week add up to 1-2000kcal without any big spikes in hunger, because of low intensity and durarion.
Even a 30' run every day creates the necessary deficit for healthy fat loss - just stick to whatever you ate before.
Improved cardio and health are great on top.
Saying lose fat is way easier through diet than cardio is just unfair. Most obese people have eating disorders, compulsion and such. Saying it's way easier it's just lack of empathy with psychologically sick people.
True but for sports it’s very important
He’s correct. As a health specialist the best way is diet restriction and resistance training. You burn more lifting a barbell for 10 minutes than running an hour on treadmill
Right that’s why when people say weight loss is 90% diet and a 10% exercise it’s really just 100% diet. You’re eating more calories than your body is using.
I agree. I’ve never lost a tonne of weight by cardio, except for when I was doing insanity, but that was not sustainable and after a few weeks I was so tired and achy all the time. It was horrible.
I’m now trying keto and the weight is coming off quite quickly with no cardio at the moment. The fat & protein fill you up so it’s easier to stick to a calorie deficit, because you’re not constantly hungry. I’m going to try adding some cardio back in though for the benefits of feeling fitter, rather than for the weight loss, but not sure how I’ll get on with low cards 😬🤞🏻
Nice. Once again, Sean droppin' facts/ science on the community.
100% correct 👏👏 I've been saying this for years, but some people just don't believe it.
So true. It is a very good supplement to diet though. And cardiovascular health is definitely one of the most important aspects of over all health.
Running is very therapeutic to me and honestly having good cardio has also let me have more energy in my day to day life and has meant I don't get exhausted just walking up a set of stairs or running to the train.
For me, the point of cardio is to improve my cardiovascular health, as well as being able to play sports without getting so tired
Atleast he said it was still usefull most influencers say it’s bad and there is nothing good with it
Great perspective. Much easier to put the fork down that to slave away on cardio machines.
Makes you hungrier too, that’s my biggest issue. Lots of cardio makes me insanely hungry
still be doing my walk cos it fixes my depression when I keep doing it regularly.
I recently started doing cardio in the gym. Aside from when I'm doing sports, I never used to do cardio. I always found diet to be very easy to control my weight but I decided to add cardio so that I can enjoy eating a few 100 more calories per day.
Cardio vascular health is more important than how many muscles u have if u wanna live a long healthy life
You can do both. I run 2 miles a day and it works
Finally someone who has the same opinion about me with cardio. Its always people who shame the fuck out of cardio, or people who don’t know that its not good for weight loss.
Also, I found out that even medium effort work, like gardening, digging with shovel, or tidying up large spaces burns more calories than working out or running.
Diet+Cardio+Weight Training is the best way to do it. No one method is full proof so just do them all, in moderation.
Finally something i don't agree with Sean. Walking and other LISSs won't compensate NEAT or your next exercise. Running and HIIT can be picked out as culprit of that
I love how he says before anyone rages because he knows that someone always has something to say keep up the good videos 👍
Cardio is way more beneficial than strenght training for most people.
Cardio honestly helped me with my chronic loneliness and depression. Don't know how that works. But love working out now. Cardio and muscle building
The only thing I’d like to add to this as someone who has lost 100+ lbs just doing cardio and nothing else, cardio seems to reduce my appetite immensely while weightlifting seems to increase it just as much. I understand weights probably burns more fat but in my situation I just struggle not to come home from the gym and eat a 3,000 cal meal. After a long run I can barely eat a banana
Bro said cardio doesn’t burn many calories while 1000+ calorie cardio session is do-able..
I grew up in a very primitive, wild, and challenging environment. Every day, people bullied me because of my looks. I had only a few friends, and I treated them poorly because I was unhappy. I directed my aggression and negative emotions toward them, losi
Totally agree with everything said in the video, and it's worth mentioning that doing cardio is training/using your cardiovascular system, which is a whole benefit unto itself.
highly depends. if you start a cardio based sport like cycling the fat just melts of your body. since i started cycling i eat way more calories in a week than before with just lifting. i am in the best shape of my life
This is something that took me months to figure out. When weight training is hard on your joints and back like it is for me, it can be difficult to know what to do at the gym. I've been doing walking cardio on a very steep incline the past few months and I think that engages a lot more muscles and makes your cardio sessions a lot more effective. But you can't out train a bad diet, and the heaviest weight to lift is the fork. Keep at it kings, queens, and in-betweens!
I totally agree. I had really let myself go over the years and what has allowed me to burn a lot of fat and get healthy again is primarily eating healthy (increasing protein, decreasing carbs, removing junk calories and ensuring caloric and other nutritional goals) and resistance training. I do cardio still as well but it’s normally just 15-30 minutes of it before I hit the weights to warm up my body and get the blood pumping.
How the heck you tell facts and still surviving on UA-cam........
Good on you brother 🙂
I think this is so interesting that some of the viewers on this video are willing to argue as if their routine fits every body type. That is not the case. Any exercise you can commit to that you can enjoy and consistently do is essential alongside ensuring you are eating correctly. That plus time invested will lead you down whatever the results of those mixtures can provide. Of course you still need to tailor those plans to what your end goals are.
