John & Woodrow shared an apt with Bernie Taupin in East End of London, hence the opening line "When I think of those East End lights." Elton was having serious doubts about the looming marriage -he even contemplated suicide. His friend, Long John Baldry, convinced John to abandon his plans to marry in order to salvage & maintain his musical career. Taupin wrote Baldry into the song -referring to him as "Sugar Bear".
