    I recently upgraded from a Rega Planar 3 with Exact to a Planar 8 with a Ania Pro. Your description is bang on. It is not nescessarily better, but the differenxes are worth noting and preferences as well.

    I went from Exact to Ania to Ania Pro on my P6 as well. At first I was really impressed but now I'm getting lots of detail but less bass. I had kept the Exact as a back up just in case so I will try the Exact again to see how it sounds. I like the warmth and a bit more bass of the Exact. I'll see how I like it.

      It’s all about what pulls you into the music longer term, detail is great but it can be irritating over long listening sessions, also higher end mc cartridges don’t tend to do well on older worn records and they can be noisier. A Ferrari is a lovely car, but I wouldn’t wanna use it as my daily driver!

    Had 2 of my Millennial kids over recently for some “DJ music listening”. We bounced around Apple Lossless tracks and then I played first vinyl album - they have never listened to vinyl before - just MPEG’s mostly on earbuds. (Recently bought Rega P3/ExactCartridge/Phono Stage - about $2K with discounts). They loved the sound, albeit the “drastic inconvenience of getting up every 20 minutes or change sides” may be a bit much for them? However, once they started looking over some of my circa 1960’s+ albums, enjoying the liner notes, band photos, etc they have warmed up to this music source. I am very content with my current vinyl “hardware”.

    I have a p3 with the Ania not the pro cartridge and especially playing through my Falcon LS 3/5a speakers is just fantastic. The speakers even through CD, vinyl and digital makes the mid and highs just sparkle like I have never heard before. Changing from my MM to MC has rejuvenated my vinyl listening even more.

    Viva.
    Tenho a Ania pro num P3 e toca lindamente.
    Vou buscar um P8 dia 2024/ 08/27, fico na dúvida se mantenha a Ania, pois ainda poderá dar algo mais com o P8, ou se a troco pela Apheta 3!
    Espero que o vendedor, ( bastante honesto ), me aconselhe o "acasalamento" ideal.
    Saudações audiófilas de Portugal.
    PS: Esqueci de referir que adquiri há um mês, o Aria mk3 e o neo TTpsu Mk2. Bestial!

      Thanks, the Ania pro with a P8 should be a great pairing. If you eventually go for a P10 then you will need a better cartridge to make the most of the turntable. Many thanks for the comment. Mark

    I'm working my way to my "end game" system and recently got a Rega Planar 8 with Apheta 3 in (I ruled out the 10 on aesthetics, the white ceramic is just too much for me). It's currently going through the MC stage of an ancient Audiolab 8000A and a pair of Mordaunt Short MS10i speakers that have seen better days, but they're all up for replacement, and the next step is going to be an Aria phono stage.
    I think Rega have really hit the right spot with their current generation of products. My initial impression of the difference was actually in the massively reduced noise floor; LPs which had formerly sounded like a frying pan were now whisper-quiet in terms of surface noise, and all of the old low-frequency rumble and gunk was just gone.
    After a week or so of breaking in, I started noticing the same as you in the bass. I had previously been used to the MC sound so this was the same, only better. The bass was clearer, deeper, had more presence, and the low-end smearing I'd previously been aware of was just gone.
    A few more weeks as it breaks in more, and the next big change is instrument separation, definition and soundstaging. It's difficult to describe this other than to remark that I can actually *hear* the different instruments as they play. The House of Love's first LP is one of my favourite HiFi test records, and on many systems it's a blurry jumbled mess. The Planar 8/Apheta 3 just digs down into the grooves and presents everything crystal clear. Tracks that were previously just a wall of mixed-up noise suddenly show their component parts. You can follow the individual drumbeats, identify each piece in the drum-kit. That's astonishing stuff.
    The summary is that music has become engaging for me again. Rather than sticking on a record and going off to do something else, I often find myself just sitting and listening. I'm almost terrified of what the Aria is going to do.

    • @Markymarkvinylnut
      @Markymarkvinylnut  Рік тому

      Thanks for the reply. The Aria will be a revelation! What you'll notice is how revealing everything is! Poorly made vinyl (and poorly recorded music) will be so apparent on your P8. That's half the fun of this hobby! Thanks again...keep spinning!

    • @mhagain
      @mhagain Рік тому

      Update time, and "well that was interesting" and "it's complicated" pretty much sum it up. I got the Aria in, and it turned everything I thought I knew on it's head.
      What happened was, having the MM stage on the Aria free, I bought a cheap plastic Audio Technica LP60 to run through it, with the intent of using that for beat-up records where I didn't want to risk damage to the Rega stylus.
      What I didn't expect was that it would sound so phenomenally good through the Aria, easily beating the Planar 8 through the Audiolab MC (the 8 through the Aria MC is another level, of course). So my first observation is that a cheap turntable/cartridge through a really good MM stage can and will sound better than a high-end source through a low-end MC stage.
      My second observation is that the old received wisdom about system hierarchy isn't really that wise. You actually have to price-match all of your components. A Planar 8 through lower-end amplification and even lower-end speakers will sound better than a 3 or a 6, but it won't sound anywhere near as much better as it's capable of, and you need to be putting in an Aethos and speakers to match as well. Otherwise you're better off getting a 3 or a 6 and spending the difference on LPs.

    I recently upgraded from the Elys to the Exact on the Planar 3 and am feeling that there is nothing left to be desired. I have not heard the Ania Pro but my experience with the first generation Aphetta left me with a "nails on the chalkboard" sort of feeling. I find many or most moving coils to be thin sounding and find moving magnet or moving iron cartridges to be more musically satisfying generally. I find the Exact to be almost perfectly balanced with just enough warmth and just enough detail. (The fact that I am a big fan of Grado cartridges tells you something about my preferences.)

    My Exact retains about 20 seconds of static charge after the tonearm is lifted off an album side, so I am taking it to the dealer this weekend. I may get them to try the Ania as I love the detail that you don't normally hear. The Exact is brilliant (except for my residual static charge) so I am interested in trying something else. Cheers!

    I went from a P6 Ania to an Apheta 3 cartridge. Had an Exact on my P3 24 which was full & warm, quite enjoyable. The MC Apheta is hugely more refined, more extended highs & lows. Bigger change yet was ditching my Rega Fono MC pre amp, replacing with Bob's devices SUT into my Conrad Johnson PV12 (MM) phono preamp, record out into my LTA MZ3. Now we're talking! Not a fan of the rather cold Rega Fono MC.

    good video.
    i have a modded rp3 with exact cart and have been considering an mc option.
    the original ania spec is dissapointing as the stylus seems to be a step back compared to exact.
    the ania pro is expensive but i was considering it. not so sure now after hearing your views.
    i like the "warmth" of the exact but would like more detail, so maybe i need to look elsewhere other than rega.
    that would be a shame as rega is the lazy option if you have a rega arm, but hey, its what we hear that is most important.

      well i have gone full circle. bought a demo P8 with Ania-pro and i absolutely love it.
      i'm certainly hearing more detail over my RP3 with Exact.
      next up is a upgrade on my Mofi Studiophono stage, with Rega Aria favourite to replace it.

    Thank you for your comments which I found very helpful. Most reviews of the P6 or Arina Pro just provide praise with no comparisons. I have a MM cartridge and I would agree with a thick flubby sound which is warm. I would nich prefer a tighter bass and more extended highs. I will be getting a P6 and Arina Pro in the next several months. Looking forward in hearing the improvements.
    Question, what differences (if any) did you find with using the same cartridge on the P2 vs the P6?

  • @sparkliteto

      Thanks, yes i invested in a Rega Aria mark III which works for both MC and MM cartridges. The Ania Pro needs a serious phono stage to get the best out of it. I've tried to keep it all Rega apart from the naim amp

    I have an old Plannar 3 circa 1983, it's modified with the following, Litz rewired RB300, Ania MC. 24v motor and a Fidelity Bearing housing, alloy sub platter and Acrylic platter, the sound was not as impressive as I was expecting but after 30/40 hrs it started to open out and appeal to me. 78 hours on it now and its a revelation in the detail it retrieves and the bass it delivers both the speed and the depth. I am hearing things on familiar LP's that i haven't ever heard before. Where will this journey end I wonder?

    Great video. I have the P2 with carbon and I recently bought a P8 with Ania Pro and the Aria phono stage. I have the two turntables side by side plugged into the Aria. I honestly cant tell any difference between the two! All my stuff is good quality. I notice a slight improvement through my 'phones (Audeze LCD) Maybe its down to my hearing or poor quality records? I'm in the US and brought my entire vinyl collection over from England. Mostly rock.... Stones, Muse, Pretenders, some Mantevani etc though. You mention audiophile records, would they sound better? Thanks, Paul

    • @Markymarkvinylnut
      @Markymarkvinylnut  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Paul, thanks for the reply. I started off with the p2 and soon fitted the exact cart. For me, the difference when spinning an audiophile 45rpm record is quite extraordinary. I pulled the trigger on a Jazz Samba and Getz Gilberto 45rpm from AP and the richness, openess and detail on the p6+ania pro is stunning. 'Muddy waters folk singer' is another record that shoes a clear improvement. Vocals improvement and soundstage is incredible. Hope you're enjoying the US (brave to transport your collection!) One day I'll be over and swing pass The Ingroove in Phoenix to see Mike. Cheers again

      Return the P8. If you can’t tell the difference between that and the P2 idk what to tell you. They’re night and day difference. Also if you are asking about “audiophile” records, yet have already bought a p8, my question is why? You seem to have little knowledge on the whole thing and just threw money at the most expensive setup. Not sure if you’re trolling or just trying to make stuff up to justify the p2, but the p2 is a toy compared to the p8

    • @quarryfield
      @quarryfield 2 роки тому +4

      @@mikechivy My hearing isn't as good as it used to be. I wish that I could've afforded stuff like this when I was younger and my hearing was perfect. I enjoy owning quality gear even if I don't get the full benefit from it. My record collection is mainly rock from England, where I'm from originally, and therefore I don't know much about audiophile quality pressings. My audio fella is trying to get me into Tidal and stuff like that, but I prefer the romance and physical feel of a vinyl record, along with the pops and ticks. I'm certainly not trolling, life is too short to waste time on that bollocks. Thanks for replying :-)
