    i'm -7 in my eyes and when I take my glasses off I just see shapes. about to start attempting to paint with my glasses off and see what kind of impressionism it turns into.

    Loved this. Full of so many good tips and using students work to show how their paintings could be improved, whilst identifying the good points in each, really worked for me. Thank you.

    Seeing shapes in landscapes is so important and your video does a brilliant job helping to identify them but it leads me to some questions I have problems with;
    1) What is your thinking when first blocking in the shapes in a painting? Are you laying down approximate colours or values or is blocking in an opportunity to use complements eg having a red tone under what will be a green area like grass?
    2) How do you approach shadows? Are they a cooled down desaturated darker version of the surface they are being cast on? How are variations in colour, tones and values established in shadows?
    Thank you for any feedback as these are inhibiting my painting development.

    Thanks so much, Chris! This video really resonated with me. While I've seen videos address painting big shapes to set the light & darks, I often struggle with where to draw the line. Having a reference with alot of detail & showing how you break that down into masses, even if there are objects with light & shadow sides within, is far more instructive than using a very simple scene. Then seeing how you add detail on top of that is immensely helpful. Watching your critique process is beneficial, as well. Excellent video!

    Great video! One thing that could be improved in the second student sample is better use of 2 point perspective on the upper front side of the building. The farther away corner should be lower than the closer front corner on the upper edge. That would strengthen the drawing. Otherwise the painting quality is nice.

    I just found your videos! I am WOWed by the priceless information that I have learned from a few of your videos. You have brought up tips that even my college professors and art workshops that I have taken never addressed! I don't paint with oil, although I am interested. I mainly paint with acrylic and watercolor. The tips and tricks that you have shared can easily be applicable to acrylic painting and some with watercolor. Watercolor painting starts with lights to darks, whereas, oils and acrylics work the opposite direction. Thanks for making your videos!!

    Excellent demo and clear description of ways to make a painting better. Your time, knowledge and teaching skills are very much appreciated. Landscaping can be intimidating when it is loaded of objects around. It takes time and observation and patience to understand what is most important. Finding shapes along with lights and shadow will definitely make the painting easier. Thanks so much for this video and looking forward to more of your essential topics. Blessings and take care.

    New to 'paintings' but I do photography as a hobby and have a strong interest in traditional oil painting as an art form and an inspiration to photography. I picked up Vermillion VR on Steam to give this type of less immediate art a try and I've enjoyed your videos as a guide or as a challenge to try and paint something different each day.
    In photography I use the squint trick to ascertain if a composition is interesting and already have a good groundwork of color balance, complementary colors and the use of shapes and contrast. But it's one thing taking a photo and another making art.
    Love your videos, please keep doing it. And if you do ever get the chance I recommend Vermillion - it's a good entry into oil art without the mess or the space and upfront cost of suppliers.

      I don’t see the face as strongly in the photo that I do in the paintings. So wouldn’t the painter want to downplay the windows so they blend in to the color of the wall? Once I see the “face”, I cannot let go of it with my eyes.

    I wonder about your decision not to show the curved shadows around the front windows or the sculpture in the fountain. They make the scene special. What in your final image captures the imagination? What sense of meaning? What attracted you to this image? I love your tutorials and critique, but I want to hear more of your creative thinking too. Thank you!

    • @paintcoach

      All I care about are shapes and composition. I don’t think about the meaning of anything. The scene got my attention and that’s all that matters for me. It’s all about the process for me and translating what I thought was interesting about the scene

      I don’t really think oils have much of a smell. The low odor spirits are strong but you can wash a used jar with a lid and close it when not using. Wash the brushes with dish soap when done.
