I have two chickens who have lost feathers around their neck and head. A little bit younger one started losing head feathers about three weeks ago. I hope it doesn't get any worse. The older two started this feather loss a few months ago. There is no rooster. I haven't observed a chicken picking another's feathers. They live in a fairly safe stress free yard. However, they could have mites or lice. Perhaps if it's lice or mites, it might have started several months ago when I got these newest three hens. I kept them in their run until I felt they had established that this coop was their home and they need to come back here everyday and also lay their eggs in the nesting boxes. Since I didn't have them as chicks, they're not so keen on me inspecting their feathers on my lap. Therefore, I think I'm going to buy that stuff you mentioned and when they're on the roost, I'm just going to spray them and then do a super clean up job on their coop and run. Am I missing anything?
Holy guacamole. This was wonderful. You have great energy for presentation. I saw my aunt’s molting chickens and it game the hibbie gibigibies. (Spelling?) so much that I couldn’t stop thinking about it. The more I understood the more it lessened. Thank you. This was wonderful to watch.
Wow at the Rescue Remedy! I take that myself! Had no idea you could use that for chickens. Also, where did you find your wooden ladder? I'd love one for my run area but the ones I've found on FB marketplace are insane expensive. My 8 RIR girls (and their boyfriend, Colonel Sanders *giggle*), are all molting right now and I am still getting 6-8 eggs a day. I had heard that reds are outstanding egg layers, and holy moly...they absolutely are! I get 6-8 eggs a day! I have dang 14 cartons of eggs right now! LOL! I need to start freezing them and water glass storing them for the winter! :) Edit: Oh, also! I want to start feeding fermented feed a few times a week (not sure my schedule will allow me to do it all week long). Is this the right thing? Also, if I have a rooster, will this be bad for them since it's for "layers"? I've heard too much calcium can be bad for a rooster's liver. www.scratchandpeck.com/product-category/poultry-feed/
Henlo! Yes, that is the feed I use. You can ferment any feed, though, even pellets or crumble! I wouldn’t ferment medicated feed. It’s fine to give it to your rooster, just offer any calcium supplement like oyster shell or eggshell in a separate dish. I got the ladder for free! It’s actually not in great condition lol.
@@WelcometoChickenlandia Ahhh, I gotcha! Thank you so much for your feedback. I don't use medicated feed so I'm good there. I did try to ferment all flock pellet feed and while the girls and Colonel ate it up, it's so weird because draining it isn't as easy as using a scratch grain. I also worry about scratch grain in the summer because I live in eastern NC so it's horrid hot and humid and I understand corn can make their body temperature go up. I definitely don't want to do anything to overheat them. I'd so totally move to the northwest in Washington state or Oregon if I could convince my husband. LOL!!! Fat people don't do well in the heat like we have in this area. HAHAHAHA!!!! Thanks again so much for your feedback! I sooooo very much appreciate it!
Ugh yeah, that would stress them out. They should get used to it after a while, though. I just added a link to the Rescue Remedy in the description! :-)
@@WelcometoChickenlandia great! I was just going to ask about an Amazon link cause I did find it on Amazon but wanted to go through your link first. Thank you so much!
A couple of my black sexlinks went through a hard moult. They couldnt walk straight for a couple weeks. I was really scared cause i had no idea that the molt could cause that.
I have one hen that I think is molting but she started losing feathers around the base of her tail and now her whole "bottom" is featherless. I thought molting started at the head? I don't have a rooster so it's not from being mounted too much.....Is this unusual?
No, I think it could be within the range of normal, but make sure you check her closely for mites and lice. :) Also when they are broody they will sometimes have a bare bottom!
I got 6 chickens on May 1, so they are just over 28 weeks old. I’ve only had 2/6 lay eggs. One of the ones who was laying (a cuckoo maran) got broody about a month ago and I had to put her by herself for 3 days to break it. Now she’s not broody, but she never started laying again. Now she’s losing a lot of feathers around her neck and sort of just all over. I have heard she is too young to be molting, is that true? I don’t see any mites or lice. I’m so worried about her, she seems to be losing weight too. Also, I don’t know why more of my chickens aren’t laying yet?! There aren’t eggs around the yard. They are on an organic layer diet with proper nutrients. Any advice would be great 😔
Hey there! The days are short right now so it’s possible they will wait until late winter/early spring to start laying. Is it possible the one chicken is getting picked on?
Is it normal for spring time molting? I’ve noticed my Australorps having some bald necks and feathers around my coop from some of the others as well, but none as much as the australorps
Yes, especially if they are younger it will be more noticeable. But all chickens can go through a molt in the spring, usually on the lighter side but not always. Hope that helps!
I have a chicken named happy and she has a bald back and it just won't grow back it mite be the roster and she is a old hen but I don't know why her feathers won't grow back
At that age I would not worry at all. Just make sure they aren’t picking each other’s feathers or any of the other things I mentioned to look out for in the video. :)
Wild and Polish 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I almost spit out my water bahahahah
I was waiting for someone to catch that LOL!!!!

I normally use duct tape, that keeps their feathers on for awhile longer!!!
I heard cat food is good for protein. What do you think?
I think occasionally it is fine. Try to get a good quality cat food. :-)
Thx a lot. I was stressed because my white leghorn was losing his feathers

HELP..How do you keep wild birds out of the coop?? i keep getting them in our barn and they love the chicken feed. Its soooo annoying
I have extra feathers around here all the time. Do you need me to send you some replacements?
Yes 🤣🤣
Mine almost 20 weeks and for about 2 weeks been loosing feathers. Its been getting colder so I know they gaining new feathers to help through winter.
Yes, that’s their juvenile molt! :)
@@WelcometoChickenlandia oh ok never knew! Ty!
make a further duster with the feathers. when the chickens realise that you are making good money out of them, trust me they will stop molting 🙈🙈
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
One of my 2 year old hens is loosing only wing feathers. They're basically all stripped and I cant figure out why? HELP !!!
So how long do I have to wait for them to start laying again, before they go to camp (it's been way to hot). LOL
Lol you better stop! It usually takes one to two months. :)
Do you have a video on how to put a hen saddle on? Mine take them off as soon as I put them on.
Hmmm not really. This is the closest thing I have but it’s not really a tutorial. Maybe I should make one! ua-cam.com/video/FnAi2s18GnM/v-deo.html
Hi, my chicken is molting ( I'm 99% sure ) and she has white dots and a black spot on her comb, is this anything I need to worry about ?
Is it ok to feed canned veggies like corn and green beans to my chickens a can at a time?
My chickens are almost bald is there anyway I could send u pictures I really need help with this problem.
Mine are only 11 weeks old and their losing feathers any advice
It’s likely just the normal molting that occurs at that age. Make sure and watch them to rule out feather picking. :)
I have a Chiken that is already 9 weeks but it has no single feather.... Look's like a necked chicken
I got a question why do you give your baby’s baths?
Sometimes if they get really poopy or just super dirty I will do it. But most of the time they are able to get clean from dust bathing. :)
Sweetie you bath your Chikens? .....wow why do you do that?
A couple of my black sexlinks went through a hard moult. They couldnt walk straight for a couple weeks. I was really scared cause i had no idea that the molt could cause that.
I thought chickens shouldn’t ear cabbage? Can someone here tell me what chickens shouldn’t eat?
Ummm...how much supplemental protein is "a little bit"? Lol, I *might be over-treating with meal worms and black oil sunflower seeds...
Haha probably a few handfuls a day for your flock would be plenty!
What about frayed feathers??

My Silkie Bantam has gone bald on her breast bone overnight? Why is this?
Do you need a nesting box for your hens?
Yes, they should have a nesting area to lay their eggs. :)
I have a question what do you put so your chickens can put eggs.
Hmm I'm not sure what you mean. Can you elaborate?
@@WelcometoChickenlandia like do you have to put like a crate or hay so they can lay their eggs.
Also I had a question what are signs that your chicken is going to start laying eggs 🐔
Her comb should get larger and redden up. Also, she might start squatting when she see you come near her. :)
@@WelcometoChickenlandia actually one of my chickens has the red thing on the top of her head and she squatters when I get close to her.😄
Yay! Then she will lay very soon. :)

How many square feet runs for bantams?
Hi I have 3 chickens 1 brown and 2 white their all the same age and i noticed that I can’t seem to find any brown feathers only white what should I do
How old are they? It's normal for them to molt at different times so it probably just means that the brown ones haven't started molting yet. :-)
There 11 weeks old
At that age I would not worry at all. Just make sure they aren’t picking each other’s feathers or any of the other things I mentioned to look out for in the video. :)
