FYI for the viewers: What she calls "hardwire mesh" in this video is more commonly known as "hardware cloth" at places like Tractor Supply and Home Depot or Lowes (and even Amazon). They are the same thing, and will work equally well, regardless of what it's called in your locale.
I literally always say it wrong. Here we call it “hardware mesh” but I always call it “hardwire mesh” 😂😂😂
Hardware cloth is usually the squares. Other is called several different names (rectangle)

My chicken runs are made from 16g weld mesh and I have just finished a new quail run from the same. It is a nightmare to work with and I’m scratched to pieces but nothing is getting in to either sets of birds 😊 so worth it in the long run. Lovely to see your new arrivals. All the best. Mags 🌺🌼🌸

Done it all. My girls are safely locked up at night and a frame with hardware cloth over the screen. The run is covered with chicken wire supported with 2x4’s. Base is also protected from digging. I have an automatic door that closes them up at dark and opens in the morning. Entry door is always locked too. Great video explaining safety.

I too got more baby chicks. can't stop myself. We used a lot of hard wire mesh and it is even buried in the ground about 12 inches to keep from burrowing under into the enclosed run. yes fishing nets are really tough. 💕 NonnaGrace

Where I live, your chickens aren't safe from predators until YOU INSTALL 1/4" HARDWARE CLOTH ON ALL FOUR SIDES. Racoons and Possums, cats and others EASILY climb an 8'-10' fence. EASILY. Plus, if your entire ceiling is 1/4" mesh, NOTHING, except the tiniest of bugs, can get in to eat your chickens OR to eat their food. No Mice, No squirrels, No Birds, No Nothing. P.S. If you can't afford 1/4" mesh, use a combination of chicken wire and deer netting (bag says "wildlife netting" ("bird netting" is the exact same product, at three times the price).

Have you heard of Welded Wire Fencing? It comes on rolls and often used for cattle. It is cheaper than hardware cloth and, when used with chicken wire, can help secure your run for daytime use - especially for large runs. (Hardware cloth is still the best though).
Just remember to lock up the chickens up at night because that is the safest option.

Lol I have a duck and rooster couple also. My grandson named the duck goose. Lol and the rooster, was a late bloomer. So we named it Shirley. Lol yes, a boy named Shirley! Who is in love with a duck named goose! Hahaha love our birds!

You have to deal with so many predators!
Here in the UK it is mostly rats and foxes, sometimes stoats and weasels but my gosh you have so many!
We use a multi attack approach- good wire, dug down.
We line edges with slabs on the outside and dig in tiles on the inside.
The roof is a combo of game netting - which in the UK is used to contain game birds in the woods until they are ready to release for shooting and mesh - finally covered with plastic on over half for shelter.
We have a fox den within 30 yrds and loads of wild foxes - but our number one defence is our kittie Sir Logan, Defender of Chickens who will chase foxes off and attack them 😆

IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Mice are also a very annoying predator (kind of). They can squeeze through gaps of 1/2 inch hardware cloth (hardwire mesh) so MAKE SURE to get 1/4 inch, those gaps don't allow mice to get in. Also make sure that there are absolutely no openings bigger than 1/4 inch, mice are extremely tiny and can fit through any gap more than 1/2 in.

Wish we'd seen this before we lost Linda and Doris to a bobcat. Doris was our fav, a flock protector and the first to greet us every morning! Now I have to both tear out the current fencing and put some serious fencing and netting to keep out the bobcat, raccoons (yes, plural), owls, hawks, eagles, and MINK!

You're absolutely right about the hardware cloth vs chicken wire. I don't know how many people I see on Facebook who shows pictures of all kinds of predators simply tearing through chicken-wire. The other big problem is when people don't attach even hardware cloth well. Loose staples - raccoons, dogs, foxes, nearly everything - can easily pull off a weakly stapled covering.
We have all the predators you mentioned except eagles, as far as I know..
Yes, chicken wire is great for some things but not for keeping predators out!
I couldn't justify the cost of hardware cloth so I found black coated. 7 foot tall 50 foot long 2x4 square fencing. It's similar to cattle fence. I covered my entire run with it and it's been great so far. Best part is it's about 50 bucks if I remember right and it's very heavy welded wire fence. And for another 100 bucks I have a fence charger and 2 wraps of electric fence ribbon around the bottom and middle of the run. It's been working great so far

We had chickens, on the farm, all through my childhood. The only time that we lost any was when our dog was killed in a road accident and we didn't replace him for about a month. Our chickens ran wild and spent their nights in a coop and our dog slept in the barn with the cows and pigs. There was an opening that he could get out if he wanted and nothing EVER bothered our chickens....until he was gone. When something took half the chickens one night, we had a new dog a couple of days later and the chicken poaching stopped.
That was in the fifties and sixties and keeping a dog in the barn is frowned upon today but it does save the lives of your livestock and at a minimal cost. One also has the benefit of having the companionship of a good dog. It's both a pet and a working member of the family.

We feed 43racoons on forest away from hens, racoons possoums stay away from hens even when morning free . Sprinkled cayanne pepper along hen house ground til we decided water cat litter tubs and bowls of food permanent solution. ,

I used 16x16 patio pavers and they work very well and look great! I sat the coops up on the edge of the stones to keep the wood off the ground,,,

We do have bears that are interested in our chickens.
We use chain link fencing 6 fr tall. Then we use fencing attached to the bottom and we dig around the bottom and bury a good foot down under. We attach it with zip ties. Then we cover the top. So nothing can fly in. We also use chain link fence panels there too. My husband did have to bury post and run treated posts along the top so the panels rest on them and he affixed them to those so they cant be moved. We used whatever we had. We got all ours off Craigslist over the years. Most for free or really cheap by taking it down. Some fencing had to be repaired. But it was so worth it. Our chickens not only in a large chicken yard of a an enclosed 6’ chain link fence but then our property is enclosed by a 4’ chain link fence so when we let our chickens out to free range are protected from neighbors dogs and they have their area to run to if something comes after them. We’ve never had a hawk fly into any of the gates of the enclosed pens after them. But prior to putting up those 6’ fencing we had a hawk fly into their coop door and get one! (And owls were going into their coop at night and picking them off the roosts! Until we tied strings hanging down from the coop door. They wouldn’t walking through the strings because they were afraid of them but the chickens were fine with them during the day)
Enjoyed this video. We used hardware mesh on our run with a metal roof covering it. We have locks on the door of the coop and an automatic door from the coop to the run as well as hardware mesh over the coop windows. Our best security for the girls is that we installed the solar Premier One fencing around the perimeter of the coop and run. It is also a large enough area for the girls to come out a be chickens but still inside of the protective fencing. So far we have had no issues with predators. We do have hawks so when the girls are out we are out with them.

I also cover my run with nets. I did that in the first place to protect the chickens from bird flu. I will buy stronger nets now 👍
When we built ours we use small gauge cattle fencing then ran a length of chicken wire around the bottom. We sunk into the ground with a cedar board as well. The top of the coop has gardening plastic shade cloth on it. It was meant for my greenhouse but we weren’t using it so he put it up there. It has kept hocks, ravens, you name it out and kept one of our simply silly Girls in when she thought she could fly away. The bonus of this is that it offers them shade as well which was really nice during the summer when we got that terrific heat dome of 47° for about two weeks.

Hi, Concerned about the netting. I tried it and found a wild bird dangling from it. The Mockingbird survived and immediately took it down.
We overlaid our chicken wire with chain link fencing we had extra rolls of. We also buried it in the ground, and placed osb board over the top of the chicken wire for extra protection and shade.

You turned this jaded old tart 100% emo! The introductions of your new birds just puddled me up. To fortify my coop from diggers, I used 12" hardwire mesh that I bent into an L about 8" down. I buried it and wired the top edge to the existing mesh. Any critter digging under the railing will skin its nose in a subterranean corner, HAR!

I missed this video, thanks for sharing. On the 1/2 inch hardware cloth, do you recommend putting it down under the entire enclosed run to keep out ground squirrels, gophers and snakes using their burrows?
It is really about knowing which predators you have in your area. For me, it is primarily foxes and eagles (the odd hawk), and in summer, snakes (this is Australia, we like to have very dangerous snakes, everywhere, including towns and cities. Foxes can jump, climb, dig, and even swim (for those considering a moat!), foxes will also attack during the day in the cooler months. I would check your buried wire (eg hardwire cloth) every couple of years, as it may rust in the ground - chicken wire will rust in the ground within 1-2 years. You can use rocks or pavers above the ground. Strong netting is fine for the roof of the chicken run, but not against foxes in Winter (hence I have a solid 3-4mm welded wire panels on sides and roof). Rats can get in through 25mm/1" mesh, mice can get in through 4-5mm holes. To keep out snakes, about 10mm (just under 1/2"). Predator proofing is probably the most expensive cost of chicken keeping, but it's worth it. I have seen the 'massacre' next door, not a survivor left alive.
Notorious Chicken Killers depending on where you reside: Coyotes, Foxes, Bobcats, Weasels, Minks, Hawks, Owls and other large raptors. Raccoons, Possums, Bears the occasional Snake or Skunk... rats can be a problem and even the neighbors cat or dog.

Our current run was an old abandoned dog run from the previous owners of the home so it already had garden fencing. Only it’s very weak and has large gaps, so I actually did double up on some chicken wire, on top of that fencing that was already there! We might build a whole new run soon and I might double up on chicken wire on top of a regular chain link fence. We live in the suburbs and our only real concerns predator wise are allll the stray cats! And a few kinds of big birds (but don’t worry we also have the run covered!)

I use Bags of quick Creek along the perimeter Are my chicken run Then I cover the concrete layer with dirt and is on the top ground such as leaves etc Is the method I employ I also use motion light on covered run and chickens stay in a locked coop at night
I saw some 16 & even 14 guage chicken wire on the link you provided for the netting, after losing a few of your birds. Might be cheaper than doubling up the regular wire. 🤷🏻♀️
I use dog kennels surrounded by chicken wire then hog panels final surrounded by welded wire fencing. Inside I will be adding dig guard. On top secured galvanized steel top rails across the top rails using chicken wire then topped off with hog and sheep panel overlapping edges of tops of kennels this is my for my chickens daytime run

A dog just went through our roof. We dont know how it got out there but it got up to the roof and dug through the tarp and chicken wire under the tarp. It was a 60+ lb dog. We have hardware cloth on the walls. There was nothing that it could use to get up there. It killed all my chickens. Everyone is thinking it used its nail to climb the walls.

i actually did all of these things, but the racoons out there in ohio were able to get in no matter what i did (within a reasonable budget i mean, you "could" build the coop out of concrete and use forged iron gates and razor wire, but then your coop costs 15,000$ though)
in the end, the cheapist way is buy a dog, our dog Coop (hehe) was a chicken coop dog, i dunno if you just get lucky with random breeds of dogs, but this one loved chickens, they were his buddies, he hung out with them, slept in the coop with them etc, after we got the dog we never had any more predator issues, it even stopped hawks
This is off topic but I have a chicken, the smallest of my flock, who has a red head all around her eyes. Her sisters, all white plymouth rock hens, have the usual red combs with white feathers around their eyes. Is she being constantly pecked? Or is their a disease out there that might cause this? I want to know when you use hardwire mesh around your coop/run, how much height you put around (already having net coming with walk-in run, I want to make it safer). like 1m height? is it enough? when you burry the mesh out (skirt out) as a way to stop rats digging, how much wide do you skirt out, 30cm-50cm? From video your mesh seem to be 1cm or 1.3cm hole size, the wire is 1mm thickness?

My friend in the city on a busy road lost all of her hens do to hawks so sad but free range isn't always or hardly the best it's so sad when it happens

I had to Giggle when I saw this video I worry about my chickens as well. 2 years ago I bought about $400 worth of that mesh you're talking about to keep my small pets in the front yard and my chihuahua chewed through it within a day. It took forever for me to figure out what was going on, but of course for using it on the top of the chicken pen is a great idea.

I had a bear eat 20 chickens. It tore through the chicken wire. It bent a T post. I'm not convinced there's anything I can build to stop it if it comes back. I have padlocks on the doors and hardware cloth for the remaining chickens.
Bears are so tough. Usually they will come looking for chicken food and then eat the chickens. The only thing that can really keep them away is electric fencing. But definitely call your local wildlife and game folks if you have a bear attack because they shouldn’t be getting that close to humans. ❤️
Definitely call your local game warden or DNR and report it if it was recent. That could become a problem bear for the people living in your area.
I got 2 pitbulls to guard my 34 chickens!! A bear would have a bad day if he tried & I'd finish him off!!😡

My chicken coop has hardware cloth however I have chicken wire around their run where they are during the day
I got some of the netting for top of chicken run, my concern is the snow. Will the snow fall through it? I am afraid it will be so heavy that it will pile up. This will be my first winter with the netting, I have LOVED the summer, it has kept all my chickens safe.
It should fall through but it really depends on the type of snow and how strong your netting is. If the snow is very wet and heavy, it can pile up for sure. I would go out there with a broom and bump the snow off as much as possible. It's worth it, though!
How powerful, how tall, what kind of electric fencing for protection from black bears? What is the best placement for the electric fence? I have a "Rugged Ranch" brand dog kennel, 15' long x 15' wide and 6' tall which I plan on having a coop centered inside of. I live in the mountains of Colorado,(8,500' elevation). There are mountain lions, black bear, raccoon, skunk and hawks that we know of in our area.

i reused a chicken area, that was used by prior owners. seemed like a good deal. I'm guessing something tested the wire, and tested the wire, and tested the wire. And eventually the staples unzipped like a zipper. So, it took a few months, but eventually, it was hard to keep them out.
Can you cover your run with nylon netting instead of the Polyethylene netting? I already have chicken wire I want to cover for further protection.

And I have a rooster that has a scissor beak that saw it when it was a month old
don’t think it was hatched with it and he is gorgeous my dad says I should breed him next year so should I? And if I do breed him if he does pass it down should I call the chicks?

As far as breeding your rooster, if the scissor beak was his sibling you could run the risk of getting the same in your flock. I wouldn’t cull them, but that’s me. :) I’m not a breeder and I can spend time caring for special needs chickens. Scissor beaks can have a good quality of life depending on the severity of their condition. :)

Rooster (scissor beak) I asked because I head a couple people interested in chicks from that rooster I don’t want to risk the chicks having it because I don’t want people to then breed the chicks I didn’t know if it was ethically OK. I don’t think I’ll be breeding him next year. thank you so very much!
When we kept bantams in our back garden we had rats sneaking in for the eggs. Despite sinking the fence a foot down. Their tunnel ran fo about 10 feet, from our neighbours Berry crop to inside the hen house. I was the first to find the tunnel because I was the one who’s foot sunk down into it. Fun!! After that dad concreted the house floor and sunk more wire mesh to a depth of 2 feet. That solved the problem.

TIP for anyone who wants to predator proof your chicken wire. Just use any fabric and a staplegun. Then overlay your wire with fabrics. It has a layer effect that strengthens the wire. Cheap free way to secure your birds.
Hey! I was wondering how you diluted your permethrin. I just rescued some chickens and they have a bad case of mites, I tried using DE but it wasn’t strong enought! Thx!
Hi, Celia! When you purchase the permethrin it should come with directions for dilution. It varies by animal and parasite or insect. And I imagine depends on which brand you purchase so I would follow the manufacturers directions. 😃

Livestock guardian dogs play a huge role keeping predators away, yes even hawks.

A bobcat went over our 8 ft. fence and right through the hawk netting - in the afternoon while i was in and out of the house. We’re going to full hardware cloth cover, and adding an electric fence as black bears are waking up this spring.
