    Hi Rachel,
    I remember at the beginning of this Vlogmas you said you landed at your job at AG because you wanted to redirect your profession into something that isn't so self-serving. I totally understood that logic, but I also wanted to take a moment to praise your online identity as That's Chic and explain how it's had an impact on my life in hopes you realize that your content really makes an impact.
    I'm graduating from college in May, but more recently made the adult transition of first at living alone at college without parents, and then moving into an apartment without the structure an on-campus life provides. Somewhere over the past year of watching your videos I realized I loved them so much, especially your vlogs, because it showed me what it's like to live as an adult. The burdens of taking care of myself--grocery shopping, making time for friends, errands, etc.--those are all things that I realized I just had to do, and I did them, but I also realized I had no idea what an adult life really looks like. I see my parents, but they're much older than me. My friends and I can talk about the transition, but it's not really something I see action by action.
    So, needless to say, your content has had a really big impact on me during this transitional moment of my life. Your laughs, your low points, even things that you might think are mundane like watching you get ready or make your bed, they're all glimpses that have kept me stable. Also, I love seeing your days at AG in a desk job, as it provides a base for what to expect as I enter my corporate job.
    I realized I kind of just talked about myself a lot, which I hate doing, but all in hopes of providing some positive energy and to reinforce to you that your channel and blog isn't totally self-serving; it's truly impactful.
    Happy New Year, babe!
    - Lili

    I used to help my manager sort through resumes and I'm currently helping my brother with all his resumes. It's 100% everything you're saying. They should be bold, concise, and well researched. Even little things like knowing who the hiring manager or specific person who is going to be reading your resume is helpful. Many jobs also using a scanning system in that they scan for certain words in your resume and only look at resumes that have a high percentage of the words they're looking for. If you know someone who was hired for a similar job, it definitely helps to ask to look at their resume. Being resourceful is a big key to landing a good job.

      Yes! Or even looking at similar job listings to see what they're asking for can help word your skills... is a great little loop :)

    In academia, there's no room for creative resumes, and the longer it is, the better! I'm just starting out and I feel like it's a pretty toxic environment, it's as if you're no allowed to show youe personality or what makes you unique! You're basically the sum of your career accomplishments

      Rachel Nguyen I’m in uni for screenwriting and just adore the medium film, so I wanted to do an internship that combined that with a business component? I sent them an email asking if they accept interns, then I sent them my CV and got invited for an interview! I’ll be part of the committee selecting the films that will be shown and I’ll also help with PR for the festival. On top of that I’ll be at the screenings to interview directors and cast members :)

    I like how you pointed out self-growth is super important as well (and probably flows into the specific areas one may be trying to improve like relationships and career). Since living outside of the US for the moment, it seems so obvious and depressing how so many Americans still think that success is being a badass in business and making bank but then wonder why they're still unhappy. And take shitty health insurance for granted when health insurance that you can actually use is a right in other developed countries, even if you're a freelancer. It's depressing hearing my friends matter of factly say they can't take time off for a vacation until April because they just started a job or relish taking 4 days off for the first time in 4 months. That paid work lunches are a perk rather than mandatory.
    And that so many of us just take it as fact that we don't have these basic human dignities! And think that we're "free."

    I really liked your A to the QoD!! I took some notes! I instantly thought of another cool way to structure my cover letter. And also you verbalizing that each and every one of us is only one of hundreds sometimes thousands of applicants kind of eased the sting of rejection, lol. Sometimes "being small," is a good thing. Part of the collective. I'm such a creative, willing, and open person who has worked extremely ruthlessly on my self worth so I am truly hoping that comes through energetically as I am sending these resumes, and soon! Really want to start at a new space this January ^_^

      Great question! I think first acknowledging a person for their time and maybe something they are going through (shows your thoughtfulness), along with a gentle reminder you exist, ask if the position has been filled yet, because you Be specific on how you want to help and add value. Ex:
      Hi xxx,
      Hope you are well as I know it's a busy time of the year

    self growth is very important, the process of becoming the person you yourself would hire. thank you for that reminder. also have been applying to hundredddds of jobs and have heard back from like 2 -- your CC was so helpful. my resume is so wordy and tries to be so impressive, not enough focus on the design or boldness of it. thank you rachel for your wisdom! you are like a fresh breath of air :)

    hello! i'm a career advisor at my university and just something about heavily designed resumes: sometimes when they upload them the design gets all fucked up, also most of the time they run resumes through a machine that picks out key words and phrases so design elements can be obstructive. just be mindful and always use pdf!

    • @thatschicblog
      @thatschicblog  5 років тому

      good points! maybe a creative page can follow up? but yes, PDF for sure. It's an immediate turn off if a resume comes in via .doc or any other form outside of PDF.

    Quick question. Do you believe that those incense you burn, the yoga, and crystals have supernatural healing or do you think the mere presence of them incur the changes that happen whether it be physical or spiritual?

    • @thatschicblog
      @thatschicblog  5 років тому +3

      Great question! I think they each serve a different purpose - but I don't think it's all 'supernatural'. Incense, to me, onboard the theory of aromatherapy and also bits of smudging. If you think about it, fire is extremely uplifting. We light candles to create an ambiance, we have fires to keep warmth and bring community. They're daily touch points that we don't think about that do shift the energy in some way. Yoga is all about mind and body. Connecting the two in an extremely focused and meditative way helps spiritually to create space, clarity, openness, and deeper understanding of yourself and soul. For me it cancels out all the noise and declutters my soul. I always feel rejuvenated and clear after an hour of yoga. Crystals are very metaphysical. They alter vibrations and we're all made of vibrations. All of the above can open your consciousness to explore and experience something supernatural. I would definitely do the research if you're interested in it!

    I disagree with an “outside the box resume”. It should be readable and succinct. Really creative folks have online portfolios instead of featuring it on their resume. Square space looks way better than Wix. I recruited for creative and design at advertising and marketing agencies. Simple and to the point for resumes, creative and well designed for portfolios.

    • @thatschicblog
      @thatschicblog  5 років тому

      That is true too! Thank you for sharing - definitely depends on who is reading the resumes. But don't you think an overly simplified resume with default text in the industry can easily be looked over when many are designing theirs out? I'd be curious to know what top 3 things stand out to you the most!
