@shananagans5 one might say the same thing about the Cayenne when it was launched, not appreciated by Porsche faithful but it was the vehicle that saved the company from bankruptcy. I also think part of the lack of mass adoption was the price, they started at $50K in 1985. To compare, a BMW 635CSI was $40K in 1985.
Agreed. I used to own one, still miss it for several reasons. I now dream of getting another one with a good body but sad engine and transmission, and then electrifying it. Would keep it until I die.

wow, this is fascinating. The car is so old, yet very modern as well. Even in the design, you just dont see many cars from the early eighties that still look like they could be sold today. Much better looking than the Cayenne, Cayman, or Panamera, hell, even better looking than a modern 911 with all the go fast bits porsche now sticks on them. This video is so weird. I am guessing Porsche delivered this piece to country clubs on Beta Max. Thanks for posting!
4m48s? anti corrosion warranty? I have owned a 1989 928GT, it has covered 280,000 KM & has never needed welding, nor does it need any now. Bought in Bristol 2004 & I have just driven around the far north of Scotland averaging 27MPG, (10.4L @100KM). Nothing about these cars is hugely expensive unless you get the franchised dealer to do the clutch. This one was a bit awkward on the single track roads though, & the only "disaster" I have suffered has been a front wheel bearing. Not bad at all!

I delivered newspapers as a kid and was nearly run over by a beautiful teal coloured 928 on a sunny Sunday morning in 1979! It was common for kids to ogle any supercar that passed through our poor neighbourhood only huge engraved ‘PORSCHE’ name on the rear bumper gave it away. I was already a fan of the 911 because of its stunning Le Mans 24H performances. so I knew 4this was a car like no other. This was how my love affair with the 928 began. I the car of my dreams 23 years later, a gorgeous jet black 928 S4. Some years she could be a high maintenance mistress, but for many years a faultless long distance gentleman’s carriage and companion. A 928 really is more than a car as they say in this excellent promotional video. I still check the National car registry to see if she’s still on the road and I’m pleased that in 2022 she still gives its new owners pleasure’s over 30 years since she was born, a testament to Porsches formidable engineering quality ❤️🙏🏽
The 80s were the greatest era ever, the early 80s were the best though, most creative stylish time, I love the 928S, its the most beautiful car ever made, one day I'm going to own an automatic in grey, things may not be good for me now, but one day ill be there. :)
Not just a mode of transport emblematic of a quality of life with all due regard to the seat design it was quite racy at the moment of presentation and would've had been something one would have had to experienced then and appealed to conservative buyers the 928 was a Grand Tour vehicle with high performance. Credentials I experienced the interior at that moment and to this day has a nostalgic place of admiration
Hah, I forgot that I had written that. I actually owned a Porsche 944 at the time I wrote that, or I had just sold it. I had a 1984 Porsche 944, paid $1600, dumped $7000 into it, and sold it for $2000. Loved it... but there's something about the styling (interior, etc) of the older late 70s Porsche 928s.
I have a white 928 S4 with 105,000 k on the clock. Has been garaged and covered since birth. About to start driving it again. Just a wonderful shape and excitement.
My house and business were on adjacent lots. My staff would often block the exit from the garage so it became a Sunday special. Now I have retired but they still obstruct the exit and I have other cars easier to remove and zoom off!
bigjuliedive Ahh, I see, although in your place I would have told the staff to not park there, as a priceless piece of automotive jewelry was in that garage! Well that's stretching it a bit, but I see your point.
Not driving to work is a fine advantage. I live in Perth Western Australia 2 kms from the CBD... 2 traffic lights. Plus short trips in cars are not good medicine for the engine. Maybe I will leave the car to my g'daughter who will be 18 in 11 years time.. what is the female equivalent of a chick magnet?
bigjuliedive Uhh, a guy magnet, I am not too sure if there is an equivalency to be honest. Just make sure she appreciates old cars and doesn't not want it just because it's old. That would be a shame.
I have a black 88 s4 and a 79 aqua blue. I love them both. for different kinds of driving. The older is a beast with a 5 speed. The s4 is a different kind of beast. I can set the cruise control at 160mph and still try and calm my wife down without having to yell over the road or engine noise. Depending on how loud her screaming is. I have a bunch of 914s too. They are like go carts. If you had one 928 and a 914 youd have the best of both worlds.
I can fit just about anything in the "greenhouse". Its a huge trunk and the back seats go down too. I have taken my children, my wife and myself with BASIC overnight bags all to the bay area from salem Oregon and everyone arrives ready to do something instead of grumpy and tired like they are when we take our Ford Excursion. The trick is, your kids have to be like 12 years old and you have to follow the seat adjustment procedure in the manual to adjust your seat properly. (germans...)
OK, I love the car, and had an 84 S2 until 2006. Despite spending more than I expected until I found the right mechanic, I did love the experience. But I want to comment on the production values of the video! So many things to cut or re-shoot!
That soft side trim strip always looks out of place. But I suppose that it is either that thing - or door dings. Seems a shame that the rotor-dial wheels seemed to have been dropped from the option list after the car's premier. Along with the 928, BMW's E31 is also on my bucket list. Beautiful and "tuff" looking at the same time. Not unlike the Messerschmidt 262.
They would all have to LIE to have commercials like these. Nothing like a Landshark. They really have no equal. Everything about them is unique. Even between the models. Love the one your with. There hasn't been a car made that didn't have a club associated with it. Fieros have a well established place in the evolution of the sports car. Hold your head high, a move you may want to perfect for when your trying to breath through your sunroof after a fire breaks out directly behind your seat..... Sorry couldn't resist. But wasn't kidding until the fire comment....
ok i LOVE these cars but my father and i go to numerous porsche shows cause were in the pscca and people allways trash takt the 928s but in todays market u can get one of these for a fairly low price like 10,000 dollars for a good one
Brother 26095, The only thing about you and I that isn't average is that we are both Shark owners. Anyone who owns one understands, others, well, they will never get it.
After watching this in 2023 again, this video reminds me why to never ever sell mine. I just recognized that I got my GTS even before this video was uploaded. I never found anything that could replace it.
Wish I had not had to sell my 928 eight years ago. It was a manual. Unfortunately since my foot surgery, if I ever got one again it would have to be an automatic.
Mine was a manual. How I miss it. Alas, since my left foot surgery my next 928 will have to be an automatic. Oh well, easier to find. Thanks for your reply, Al.
I know it's the one you replied to, but clarify please. "Yuck" in reference to what within that comment? "Yes, they were" as regards what. The only part of that comment I can see that you your comment could meaningfully respond to is "It was a manual." And even that doesn't make any sense. If you cannot clarify your comment then forget about it.
No it was not obvious nor completely obvious because your comment appeared in my private outlook inbox. and you answered me the first time I replied to you. OK enough said. Thank you for your clarification.
im tryin to get one of these once I get out of college and secure a job. im goin for auto technician. see my dad had a 944, I loved that car. Im still kinda confused on what one I want but I want a porsche for sure.
I did a very long time ago. I was importing into the US. LOL I way over priced it so I could use it as my personal car for about 6 months. I also had several others for short periods of time. I have never had one that was old but when they were only a few yrs old they were one heck of a car. The only comparable car I had was an M 635 but that was also modified and not stock from the factory like the 928. I assume 20 yrs later they are still very good cars given the original build quality.
Beautiful promo, I want two; one early one just like what is shown in the very first shot in that mineral grey (?) color with designer cloth seats and phone dial wheels. To go alongside that one, a 1995 GTS model, dark blue over gray. =-)
If I didn't have a 911....my second choice was a 928, but here in Australia the 928 is virtually impossible to get it as a manual & there's no way I'm getting an automatic Porsche !
The automatic was the correct transmission for this car. It was made to be GT rather than a sports car. Having own one myself, they are not small cars.
Interestingly the S2 auto starts in 1st, but in the S4 it starts in second, supposedly to control the additional power to the wheels when taking off. Fits the GT genre rather than the go cart feeling of the 911. Although the auto sucks some of the power I always found it such a pleasure to drive and the transmission was rock solid. On both my 928s have never touched the transmission even after 170Ks on the clock
I have a '79 928 that I traded my '73 Mercedes Benz 460SE which ran for it. I have no idea if this 928 runs or not.....I don't even have a key to it. I do have the paperwork to it but I'm in no position right now to try and get it running. It's been sitting for 3 years or so in my garage with my equally challenged '83 944.
I have two, an 84 S-Euro 5spd and an 87 Strosek Widebody 5spd with headers, etc. Great cars, parts can be hard to come by and mechanics want an arm and a leg to work on them. Resale value is terrible, but it's the owner's fault for letting them go so cheaply. This one sold for that, so the next one sells for even less. It should be working the other way around but people get to the point they just want to get rid of them.
Not just one of the best Porsches ever built, but one of the best automobiles ever
you see how great the car has aged when you see it on the road today, but you see here in the video, it made everything around it look dated. great car.

2:04 Wow, there's enough luggage space to fit a golf bag. Just have to ditch the golf trolley. LOL! 🤣
Right on, sir. Truer words were never spoken.
ok i LOVE these cars but my father and i go to numerous porsche shows cause were in the pscca and people allways trash takt the 928s but in todays market u can get one of these for a fairly low price like 10,000 dollars for a good one
Brother 26095,
The only thing about you and I that isn't average is that we are both Shark owners. Anyone who owns one understands, others, well, they will never get it.
After watching this in 2023 again, this video reminds me why to never ever sell mine. I just recognized that I got my GTS even before this video was uploaded. I never found anything that could replace it.
luv the lights!!
Wish I had not had to sell my 928 eight years ago. It was a manual. Unfortunately since my foot surgery, if I ever got one again it would have to be an automatic.
I think like 80% were built automatics
Mine was a manual. How I miss it. Alas, since my left foot surgery my next 928 will have to be an automatic. Oh well, easier to find. Thanks for your reply, Al.
They were what? Easier to find as automatic? In reference to what specific comment or question are you yucking about?
I know it's the one you replied to, but clarify please. "Yuck" in reference to what within that comment? "Yes, they were" as regards what. The only part of that comment I can see that you your comment could meaningfully respond to is "It was a manual." And even that doesn't make any sense. If you cannot clarify your comment then forget about it.
No it was not obvious nor completely obvious because your comment appeared in my private outlook inbox. and you answered me the first time I replied to you. OK enough said. Thank you for your clarification.
Une merveille
4:49 driving in Paris has not changed.
I used to drool over these when I was a teen in the 80s.
im tryin to get one of these once I get out of college and secure a job. im goin for auto technician. see my dad had a 944, I loved that car. Im still kinda confused on what one I want but I want a porsche for sure.
There is No Substitute.
Something something there is no substitute
Beautiful promo, I want two; one early one just like what is shown in the very first shot in that mineral grey (?) color with designer cloth seats and phone dial wheels. To go alongside that one, a 1995 GTS model, dark blue over gray. =-)
@ 2:00 - The only size human that can fit in those back "seats."
@drouin916 Don't sell it. It is a great car. Just stay on top of the maintenance and it will last for a long, long time.
I have one. Where's my freaking castle? They make it seem like if you buy the car they'll throw in a big castle for free...
nice upload!!!
If I didn't have a 911....my second choice was a 928, but here in Australia the 928 is virtually impossible to get it as a manual & there's no way I'm getting an automatic Porsche !
the auto kick-down is a real thrill.
you're missing out
The automatic was the correct transmission for this car.
Getting one soon :D
84 928S
I had one of those, until 2006. That model had the best sound. Hope you found one and had joy.
Great car , I owned the 928s 1979 classic black if only ?
I've always wanted one since my childhood. I've a Joustra one instead ;)
I half expected a Monty Python gag Ad the way the beginning sounded.
Sounds like a young Sir Anthony Hopkins narrating. Great car!
It should be working the other way around but people get to the point they just want to get rid of them.
for a VERY brief second I thought I saw a Lexus RX in the background... then I realized... LOL.
awesome car though.
Just bought 1980 Euro S Model, Very Happy With Car, Very Fast
It´s NOT Porsch, NOT Porscha .... ITS Porscheee
Sorry for beeing late for 13 years 😅
