I used a home brew for the weapons versus armor question designed back in the early 80s. It was first suggested in the Greyhawk supplement to the original three books. Certain weapons are more effective against certain armors, as that's what drove the designs in real life. A falchion is weighted at the business end, rather than just sharp, to act as a can opener, for example. In my system, the armors subtracted hits from the damage roll: Leather -1, Studded Leather -2, Scale -3, Chain -4, Plate & Chain -5, Plate -6, but then you checked what weapon was being used, and so the hits varied. I liked running more Dark Ages games, so I didn't have the humongous list you find in later games, the apex being 5E. Only weapons you've heard of and can pronounce!

As for the initiative (which sorta looks like quick players - monsters - other players - quick players - monsters - other players etc.), one could argue that essentially monsters always come first; the only thing initiative roll determines is whether some of the PCs may act once before regular combat begins (cf. quick players - monsters - players - monsters - etc.).
    Anyways, very informative review.

I am so happy that I am not the only one who uses 0th.

Great review, thanks. I was surprised to hear advantage/disadvantage was an old school rule, especially as I've read quite a lot of OD&D and 1e books. Which early D&D book(s) contained this rule?

it is an invention of Whitehack RPG, an OSRish game. It was not contained in any edition of D&D before 5e, who copied that idea from Whitehack RPG (which actually used the name "positive dice" and "negative dice")

The concept of rolling multiple dice rather than adding a modifier is an old school mechanic. Games like Tunnels & Trolls and The Fantasy Trip used them in the 1970s. Not everything old school comes from D&D.

@@catfishcooler1566 Yes, I've since got into the Fantasy Trip, and Tunnels and Trolls, though there the dice are literally just added or taken away, rather than used to allow selection of the best result, right? I'll be very happily corrected on this one, but the first example of something like 5e advantage/disadvantage that I know of is in the effect of a curse in the original LotFP Death Frost Doom adventure, which does predate 5e, but is 2000s OSR rather than original 70s old school.

If your really interested in the advantage/disadvantage gaming history. Read the replies not just the article.

TBH is definitely encouraging me to write my own rules/settings/campaigns.

attack damage is defined by class and is annotated as armed/unarmed. It will look like 1d8/1d2.

about the armor point mabye a good mecanic would be that if your armor has 4 armor points it reduce the first hit by 2 and instead of the armor being gone it is reduce to 3 armor points absorbing 3 damage on the next hit then 2 then 1 and then 0 till rest seems a little more usefull this way

there are alternative rules that give the armor usage dice. it's an excellent mechanic.

There's plenty more, but that should get you started. Honestly, the highest quality DnD discussions and ideas I've seen online happen in the Google Plus communities and networks. If you seek out the authors of the good DnD blogs on G+ and follow them, you'll end up in the greatest conversations.
